@@kandlel.923 Watch the rifftrax version its the funniest 😂
How some thing can be a complete masterpiece and a dumpster fire at the same time is beyond me, but they made it happen
The production was a complete and utter nightmare. The directors were fired and kicked off the set, most of the actors were drunk just to deal with it all, daily screaming matches, daily unannounced revisions, massively over budget. A complete nightmare
@@leonstrand329 I'd call it a fever dream, but I don't care, I absolutely LOVE this movie!
@@IggyStardust1967 well, I cant fault you for that lol
This movie needs a remake
Mario 1993 is still the best Mario movie of all time, in my opinion. Mario 2023 plays it too safe and brings nothing new to the franchise. Mario 1993 was pure soul.
When I heard about this movie actually existing, I was like "the directors, producers, and writers clearly never played the Mario games in their lives"
john and bob saved this movie by just being great actors and personalities.... also the set design was pretty rad i love this gd movie
The production was a nightmare, I think the directors were fired, most of the cast was drunk just to deal with all the chaos, and yes they had never played the game
Actually, the early version of the story for the movie was good and more like the games

The name of Marios gf in this is Daniella, what they don't tell you is her middle name which is Pauline(the Jumpman/Donkey Kong chick)
....
The implication that the dinosaur skeleton in the sewer was Daisys mom.
...
Lena gives me Aunt Petunia vibes(same actress) especially since they have her have the same hair and eye color as Daisy and she says: 'You have your mothers eyes'
I still couldn’t believe that Daisy was the voice of “Crysta” in “Ferngully the last Rainforest”
Samantha Mathis.
I did not know that. I also loved Ferngully
What I also love about this movie…
Fun fact, this movie is literally made by Disney! They distribute it and Hollywood studios is owned by Disney. I really want this movie on Disney+!
Well that explains why the movie was so bad

Zoomer moment. Disney was good in the 90s.
This is a guilty pleasure type movie. You had to have seen this as a kid to enjoy it.
I still love this movie. It's my guilty pleasure too!
Oh absolutely!
Same.
Yep, I am one of those few lol
"This is a guilty pleasure type movie."
Wrong, this is a pleasure type movie for me but without any guilt.
"You had to have seen this as a kid to enjoy it."
Wrong again. I saw this movie for the first time last year when I was 34 and I enjoyed it. I always love the 1993 Mario movie no matter what.
In terms of adaption, it’s definitely the worst. But on its own, it’s a bizarre but fun ride for the most part! This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine!
A unique and experimental hollywood adaptation in a sense
Me too
"This movie is a guilty pleasure of mine!"
Imagine having guilty pleasures. Grow a spine. This movie is a pleasure of mine without any guilt. Mario 1993 is still the best Mario movie of all time, in my opinion. Mario 2023 plays it too safe and brings nothing new to the franchise. Mario 1993 was pure soul.
The lady that played Big Bertha would have been a good Amanda Waller
I was one when this came out and personally I love this movie. Lot of childhood memories that come with it. My parents always got a laugh when I would dance to everyone do the 🦕. I always hope that daisy turned toad back to normal.
😂 the sledding on the bed! Think about this for a moment here. Super Mario 64 sledding with the penguin. They must’ve gotten the idea from the movie!
I feel like everyone is watching the old Mario Movie so that they can compare it to the new one.
When you discover that this film was made by the same team that created the dystopian sci-fi series _Max Headroom,_ then why things are the way they are in this movie becomes more apparent.
Okay, this movie should've been it's own thing: a parallel dimension of dinosaurs evolving with a dystopian setting is interesting, but it's not Mario Brothers. With that said, Bob Hoskins was perfect as Mario, and the animatronics for Yoshi and the Goombas was great. I still enjoy this movie as a guilty pleasure
I will give credit to this film for something: Daisy and her relationship with Luigi, as my favorite mario princess and couple, that means a lot to me.
Fun fact. When Koopa fires the gun at the end, thats the actual NES "Bazzoka" that was out to shoot at things on the tv screen for certain Nintedo games.
Correction: Is the SNES Super Scope, but repainted
@@phantomzone2725 Superscope! Thats what it was!
I don’t disagree. I’ve lost brain cells watching this
I love Frank Welker dude. How this guy voices Megatron and Curious George is amazing.
This movie is more of a nostalgic time capsule representation of the times than any Mario Bros movie.
R.I.P. Bob Hoskins. One of the best.
This was one of my favorite movies to watch as a child, I've seen it so many times lol I like that its fun and weird
To be honest, I loved this movie as a kids. and I still do.
Me too. Even also I like Super Mario Bros Super Show cartoon.
Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo were both so miserable because of the unprofessional nature of the directors that they drank between shots. Mario and Luigi were pretty much tanked the whole movie. Dennis Hopper has also recalls this as the worst job he'd ever done. (And he's done 150+ movies.)
This adaptation to Mario Bros. will be completely shrouded in the light of the rising Starman ⭐️ that is the upcoming film. Super Mario Bros. Movie 2023 hype!
Are you Serious??
You'll Watch this movie on your channel but won't watch Short Circuit 1 & 2 ?
I have suggested "Short Circuit" already several times over 2 years ago and nothing has come of it to date.
@@martinbraun1211 I've been doing the same... Glad I'm not the only one honestly
Can’t wait to watch your reaction 😂❤ I can’t with this movie. I need snacks.

I’m going to watch the animated movie next week. Really looking forward to that one. Hopefully it’s good.
Fun fact: Actor Bob Hoskins himself called working on this movie "an f***ing nightmare".
I'm sorry, but I love this movie so damn much. It's up there for me with the 1st live action Teenage Ninja Turtles movie 🤷🏿♂️
I loved this film!!!! I watched it the 1st time during Game Development 1 class in my Freshman year of High School (Game Development was pretty much making your own game, but the teacher gave specific directions to make it) and my teacher showed this film to us. And of course we had to fill out a questionnaire on the movie, but personally I loved this film!!! Maybe it's my love for bad movies, or I just had a great time with this film
I remember when I watched it for the first time I was like: "What am I looking at?" I was genuienly disturbed at some parts, but at leasr they made an attempt for IRL mario movie (even tho it doesn't have a reaoly good result) at least on this week we're gonna have the new one and i'm so excited:D
This movie should be celebrated for its own sheer absurdity if nothing else.
They took a property that didn't have a lot of established mythos at the time, injected Blade Runner cut with Mad Max directed into its veins, pumped it full of sugar and laughing gas and presented it to the world.
You got me by surprise that you reacted to the original super Mario bros Movie
Apart from 3 or 4 of the characters, this had literally nothing to do with the games. But while it may be a bad adaptation, I feel like it's still a "so bad it's hilarious" kind of enjoyable movie.
I seriously wish this was in digital to buy. I want this!
I must be honest. When Mario and Luigi goes back I cry for Bob Hoskins..
I *LOVE* this movie! It's so good in my opinion.
I'm glad that you at least found this movie entertaining. I was 3 years old when it released and even though it completely bombed, and is considered a train wreck, it's still a big guilty pleasure of mine and I still very much enjoy it for what it is. The actors themselves didn't enjoy doing it though especially with Bob Hoskins and Dennis Hopper calling it the worst experience they've ever had. I believe John Leguizamo got drunk several times just to get through it. I think the biggest problem with it was the directors and the fact that there was just so many script rewrites. The film was shot at the abandoned Roanoke cement factory in North Carolina. Samantha Mathis (Daisy) is the daughter of Bibi Besch and she was the actress in the first Tremors film that went down with the car as the monsters buried it.
If you go into it and treat it as it's own story, separate from what we know as The Mario Bros. then it's not as bad as what people say it is. I actually found this Yoshi to be absolutely adorable and they did an amazing job with the animatronics. The elevator scene is probably one of the most well known scenes in the movie. We still have the VHS tape of this movie and a while ago I watched it again on my still working CRT TV with a built in VCR and it was so nostalgic.
I'm happy that you are ok with Chris Pratt voicing Mario, but unfortunately his voice just doesn't cut it for me, however that is really the only thing about the new film that bothers me. The rest of the cast voices are fine especially Jack Black as Bowser whom I feel is going to steal the show because Jack Black always puts all his energy into his characters and the visuals are absolutely stunning. I'm going to wait and see what other people say about this new film before watching it myself.
Anyways, thank you Tim for reacting to a film that holds a special place from my childhood. :)
I unironically love this movie. I expected to hate it but I was pleasantly surprised. This movie may not be an accurate adaptation of the games. Especially back then. But, it's a fun quirky adventure that shows that there was still effort and care put into it. With that said, can't wait for the new Mario movie next week!😁
17:08 the most game accurate thing in the movie
This movie came out when I was born 1993 I'm 29 years old I saw this movie when I was 7 or 8 I don't remember how much I remembered ❤❤❤❤
I don't blame you for not having a clue what's happening in that movie. The 80's and 90's were weird back then.
I feel like this movie was bankrolled by the plumbers' union. It's like one big endorsement of plumbers
The weirdest thing is if you look at toad before he became a goomba he looks similar to “Axl” from “The middle”
i love this movie! according to Johm Legizamo him and Bob were drunk the whole time filming this.
I’m one of the small percentage of people who unironically love this movie.
I only saw this movie once
It’s my birthday 🎂 today 🎉 so I am actually going to enjoy this movie for the laughs and the cringe
Happy birthday to you!🎉🎂
Happy birthday 🎉🎉🎉🎉
Jokes aside.
Your Mario intro was top tier.
I think you could’ve pulled off as a better Mario than the one Hoskins was doing
This movie is honestly one of my guilty pleasures. I do agree in why so many people hate this movie cuz it's not like the games, but at the same time i actually like it. It kinda feels like a gritty dark alternative universe 😄
Anyway, as much as i do like this movie, i do know that the new mario movie is gonna be waaaaaaay better than the 90's live action one. I'm so excited for it!! 😃
Big Bertha is the big fish in super Mario bros 3.
the best thing that came from the Movie was, that NIntendo abandonned all plans of their series to be released as movies and after the success of recent game adaptations aquired their own movie department so that "THIS" would never happen again.
Not the Mario Jump, Tim!😂❤
This movie is a classic, by the way fun fact though this was the first video game movie ever made, in my opinion this movie is one of my favorite guilty pleasures
Easy to miss: Lance Henriksen (Bishop from Aliens) plays King Bowser at the end.
Dennis hopper is king bowser. Lance henriksen is just the mushroom king
@@SuperCjm007 Dennis Hopper is King Koopa...not King Bowser. (I had to check that before I commented, so no shade, christian! Sorting through a dumpster-fire is...well...it stinks and burns.)
✌️
@@gggooding I know that but in movie format he is “king” bowser
@@SuperCjm007 by all means if I'm wrong I wanna know. I'm wrong _ALL_ the time, for sho. 🤗
IMDb lists Lance as King Bowser and Hopper as King Koopa.
In the actual game...Koopa and Bowser are the same fella.
I think we're *BOTH* right and the issue here is that the movie is a stupid train-wreck that f*ed up _everything_ about...well, basic filmmaking and then down the mountain in a burning train...never mind the video game.
(Daisy vs Peach! Who cares!)
I was just pointing out that Lance is in the movie! And I love me some Lance (huh?).
He played Keiser Soze's Jedi father with Rosebud in a box and was dead the whole time. 🤗
Just because someone references in a movie that they play video games, does not that make that a video game reference.
Remember this is the first videogame movie ever. Considering the source material and era its great. I went to see this at the movies when I was 11 and the crowd and myself loved it.
I loved it as a kid, but it’s def not great.
The actors hated filming it, were getting drunk I believe on set, and I’m pretty sure the directors got blacklisted after it haha
Ah yes, the movie that cursed all movies adaptation of video games for over 25 years...
For the record, Nintendo was barely implied in the making of this... thing. Actually, they only gave their approbation for the usage of the characters and other copyright stuff, and that's why it could be considered anything but Mario media...
Now, in 4 days, it's the exact opposite, Nintendo were more implied than any studio ever was for a video game movie.
An additional history lesson:
Nintendo was so scarred by this that when they started to plan other movies and series a few years ago (notably a Legend of Zelda live-action with Netflix), they pulled the plug on *everything* when just 1 thing got leaked by 1 employee.
And a last fun fact:
*_You're breathing and blinking on command now._* Enjoy! 😋
I was amazed how they did Yoshi
As a Mario movie, this was a trainwreck. But if you look at it as a stand-alone movie that is just making references to the games for fun, it's actuall;y not bad. I mean, it's not a GOOD movie by any standard, but it IS highly entertaining.
18:03 That fire thing was supposed to be like the fireballs from the Fire Flower in the games, but it did not look good here 😬
When you deep dive into this movie.....alternate dimensions, reptilians, police state authoritarianism. Whatever the fungus is suppose to mean..umm....know how to fix your pipes.
Hopefully the new Mario movie this April will be better.
I wait on next week to watch “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and see how it goes for the ratings
I saw “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” two days ago. It’s a good one. Everything is based on the video games 🎮 🕹️
Dang! The live-action Mario movie.... what next, live-action 2005 DOOM movie?
Really funny that this awful movie was a pioneer in VFX. They were the first to do particle physics for the scenes when they merge the dimensions.
It's funny that the Dino world uses a power grid cuz I guess there aren't any "fossil fuels" lol
I find it funny they never call king Koopa Bowser because according to IMDb that’s the name of Daisy‘s dad in this movie.
I loved this movie when I was 8 and I still love it now.
It’s definitely a product of its time
I enjoy it every time I see it
I saw it as a kid, and I still enjoy it. I only really played Mario 64, but it's just a silly movie. Maybe consider it an alternate reality and turn your brain off and it's still fun.
32:25 I find it funny that those are supposed to be Goombas considering Goombas in the video games are mushrooms with feet and faces.
I used to love this movie as a kid, then I watched it again recently, and now I like it more
If you enjoyed this, you should check out the director's cut of it! There's some scenes they had to cut, but they are pretty good!
Anyway, I love this movie so, so, so, so much! Definitely one of my favorites of all time! It's just an absolute blast!
Doesn't matter how low or high the ratings of this movie is what matters is how much Mario Bros entertained us. Also Bob and John were great live-action Mario Bros, and this movie is one of my best favorites, my brother and I have the same bond like Mario and Luigi do. I hope you enjoyed the movie and the new movie coming tomorrow, Tim
I saw this movie in theaters opening weekend and had the VHS as a kid. SMH 😂
37:12 lol I forget the name but I wanted that gun soooo bad back in my NES days
Love the fact that because they have to use King Koopa instead of Bowser (which is even weirder cause Bowser is the king turned into fungus so there's that🥴) the minions that he de-evolves that look more like Koopa Troopas are called "Goombas", even though Goombas are Mushroom beings.
This movie is weird!
This movie has TWO end Credits btw!
When you said you did this trash sandwich today too, I had to come see what you thought of it 😆
37:46 So you know the Nintendo Wii Tim
Just so you know, Mario and Luigi used to talk like regular individuals with Brooklyn accents back in the 80s and 90s in an old cartoon show, “Super Mario Bros. Super Show,” which is why they casted Chris Pratt and Charlie Day to play as Mario and Luigi for the movie. The WWE wrestler, Captain Albano Lou was the iconic OG Brooklyn Mario; if they go with the voices from the games, I feel like it’s not gonna fit; it would be kinda weird and annoying, since Mario, Luigi, and other characters from the games don’t have that much dialogue, and they’re high-pitched and exaggerated, but Brooklyn Mario and Luigi does. I’m actually glad that they brought back the old iconic Brooklyn Mario and Luigi for the movie, because it fits more.
I saw this in theaters while in high school. It did entertain me. Not a great movie. Not a bad movie. Something I’d watch on TBS or TNT to kill time. But, I wouldn’t call in a Super Mario Bros. movie. Though, this is what Hollywood did to most video game and comic movies at the time.
I recall reading an article that had the actors playing Super Mario Bros. for the first time while on set, so they knew nothing about it going in. But, actors don’t write movies. You want a really interesting story, read about or watch a video about the making of this movie. It was apparently a clusterf**k. Everyone hated the directors who had no clue what they were doing.
One think about this movie is that they only had 4 games to work with!
Plus ‘Toad’ in this movie looks nothing like Toad!
Let’s just hope the new Mario a movie is 10x better then this one!
I unironicly loved this as a kid lol
Despite being rated as a bad movie I always liked it

Bob Hoskins (Mario) said this was the worst thing he’s ever done.
@jillybelphegor4819when I was a kid, I was furious because it wasn’t like the original game. The graphics at the beginning were worse than the game at that time.
31:32 yeah every human looking creature we see in Dino Hatton are descendants of dinosaurs.
I honestly love this movie, been watching it since I was a kid, same with Waterworld with Kevin Costner, plus John Leguizamo was the voice of Sid the Sloth in the Ice Age movies and he was in another low rated movie that I love called The Pest
The movie had a lot of changes, the early scripts of the movie were released on internet, i think the story was changed like 4 or 5 times and ended up as this movie, the first script was actually good, Mario and Luigi were to a different world to save Luigi's girlfriend from Koopa (that was planned to look like the one from the games), meanwhile Mario had his development during the story, it was like an 80's dark fantasy story, there was a video that talk about those early scripts and giving a link to the internet page where those scripts were uploaded
As a kid I was confused and as an adult I still can’t wrap my brain around what they were doing
32:43 yeah the reason there’s a bunch of town whiplash is because this movie was originally gonna be much darker when the two new directors came in fact they were going to have strippers in this movie and hookers but the studio try to make it more kid friendly and also somewhat like the game this movie had a few directors they kept replacing before they actually started filmmaking and even then when the new directors came the script got rewritten so many times The actors just gave up on remembering their lines.
This movie almost killed Bob Hoskins
I was born 1993 n only saw this movie 3,4 times tbh I'm happy ur watching it she movie story I don't remember much
Worst movie? You haven't seen The Pest or Cold As Ice, have you? Oh boy. You'll have to check those out.
I'd love to see his reaction to certain other 90's movie that starred John Leguizamo which also bombed...
There's a directors cut of this movie called the Morten Jankel cut that restores alot of the deleted scenes and makes the movie a little bit better as it expands on the characters and their backstory. It doesn't make it into a great movie or anything but it's defintely more watchable then the theatrical cut.
31:13 "I promised to take her to Wrestlemania."
"You mean, you don't know? It's Wrestlemania 9."
Those of you who watch OSW Reviews will get the joke.
I wonder if the animated Super Mario Bros. movie that is coming out soon will be an improvement on this one? At least in the animation? lol
Also, there was an end credits scene that I'm guessing you missed out on
It's actually a lot of fun! I don't see why people hate it so much! It's easier for the younger generation to sneer at 90s CGI but it really was cutting edge stuff. There hasn't really been another leap like this since - maybe 3D cinema but even that has been around in some form for over sixty years. The 90s were a very exciting time.
