It's a classic! The Live Action Super Mario Bros Movie! Surprisingly, I haven't seen it after all these years. So let's see just how iconically disasterous thie bold adaptation can possibly be to be titled as one of the worst video game movies of all time...

I will NEVER forget seeing in theaters back in 1993. The theater was full, the kids were excited....and the entire theater proceeded to sit there in silence for 90 minutes, just as they did with TMNT 3 that same year.
I always told people that leaving the theater felt like filing out of a funeral -- same with 1998's The Avengers.

I grew up on stuff like Blade Runner, so I was one of those weird kids that actually LIKED the Mario Bros movie. Like, I knew they could make a movie that's anything like the actual video game (I mean, for 1993 at least) so I was cool with it being weird and them throwing in Mario references here and there.
Everything is always different when moving from one medium to another, and I was perfectly happy with how they did it in 1993.

Wait, that was an audio glitch? I mean, I thought it sounded weird, but I just assumed it was a voice crack or something. It did sound a little…gamelike to what Iggy sounded like sometimes. Nothing on Fisher Stevens, but Iggy’s voice is so inconsistent. Sometimes it’s fairly smooth and normal, sometimes it’s like this husky growl and other times it’s 11:41.
I have the feeling that Iggy still has yet to experience puberty. Maybe it’s a dinosaur thing. Then again, we also have Ludwig, who isn’t an adult yet, and puberty hit him like a train.

Here's some facts about the Super Mario Bros. movie:
-The movie cost 48 million dollars to make, but only grossed under 21 million at the box office.
-In an Q&A with The Guardian, Bob Hoskins was asked what was the worst job he ever did, what had been his biggest disappointment, and if he could edit his past, what would he change. The answer to all three was Super Mario Bros.
-John Leguizamo was so sure the movie would be such a success, that when a major TV network offered to develop a sitcom about his life, he turned them down thinking he was too good for TV.
-When Conan O'Brien asked Dennis Hopper if he regretted being in any of his movies, Hopper said "I made a picture called Super Mario Bros. My six-year old son at the time - he now 18 - he said, 'Dad, I think you're probably a pretty good actor, but why did you play that terrible guy King Koopa in Super Mario Bros.?' I said, 'Well Henry, I did that so you could have shoes.' And he said, 'Dad, I don't need shoes that badly.'"
-Danny DeVito was offer the role of Mario but he rejected.
-Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Keaton were both offered the role of Koopa but they both declined.
-The directors never worked in Hollywood again and were avoided like leppers.

Not surprising it flopped. Hoskins didn't even know it was based on a game until his son Jack told him and showed him the cartridge game. Hoskins must have realised then what a mistake he made as I heard him and John leguizmo had such a bad experience working on it that they would often spend time in bars drinking knowing how bad it wqs gonna turn out. As for legeuizmo turning down the show you mentioned no doubt he was kicking himself knowing what a mistake he made.
All the rest of the other actors that turned the roles down all dodged a bullet there

True, that was confirmed. I'd say Mario, Luigi, Pauline, Donkey Kong, and Donkey Kong Jr were in Brooklyn at one point in the events of the DK Arcade game all the way to the Mario Bros Arcade game. Then afterwards, the Mario Bros separate ways going to the Mushroom Kingdom. And Donkey Kong and Jr found an island to live and name the island after him. New Donk City is based on New York and Pauline is the mayor in New Donk City in the Metro Kingdom. Pauline most likely made New Donk City to make it like the home she originally live and run as a Mayor in there.

As I understand, the director of this movie wanted to make a post apocalyptic, pet project, but couldn't get any of the studios to fund it. Then, when the studio execs saw that these Nintendo games were super popular and making tons of cash, they wanted to get hitched to that bandwagon. So they got the rights to Super Mario Bros., one of the absolute most popular titles at the time. The director was basically turned down when he proposed his post apocalyptic script, but they knew he would work for relative cheap, so they offered him "Super Mario Bros.". The director then, pretty much made a couple changes to his post apocalyptic movie script that he already had, and just slapped the name, "Super Mario Bros." on it. So this was his way of filming his passion project in some form. There's a reason why there's not a single proper element from the game in that movie except in name only.
