A Mario Bros. Live action movie was always going to be a seen as crap. Kids wanted live action Mario to be like the games. What did the games have that you could realistically translate to live action? There was no story to draw from, and nothing realistic to ground it with. A script was always going to be a mostly original creation because of this.
It was always going to be a weird ass movie with the only connection to the games being two characters named Mario & Luigi, where the plot and setting had nothing to do with running from left to right, stomping on turtles. Kids were going to hate it no matter who wrote it or directed. "It's nothing like the games", the kids said. No shit. Kids are fucking dumb.

    • @abadenoughdude300
      @abadenoughdude300 Před 5 lety +17

@@Helvetica_Scenario This. Unlike today's games, most (if not all) games from the "golden age" had virtually no story to go by. You were doing stuff because it was fun and to get a high score, there were no multilayered stories to build a movie upon. Hollywood didn't help either, picking franchises based on name value derived from popularity, not whether there was anything to work with, like Mario, Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. There were plenty of games with actual deep stories (adventures or rpgs) but they weren't as popular, not to mention they were too big to squeeze into a 90 minute film.
Of course, you could make a dumb fun 80's style action flick out of those games but for that you'd have to not suck at your job.

Hire a midget to play Mario, make a strange puppet human like the Dark Crystal's Gelflings, have Peach inexplicably be the the only human on set... like Labyrinth. Unfortunately, those movies had not reached their cult status yet and were seen as disappointing. I would also accept a movie with the same cast, just the original pitched world with little Muppet goombas, two to a puppeteer. Sets with hundreds of trapdoors on them for every place a Toad or Yoshi or any other Muppet would show up. And of course a Ludo-sized Bowser, who's costume is so heavy there are a pair of twins who switch off during filming. Every decade the movie gets more and more grandiose, and if I ever wrote any of it down... it would look silly. That's the problem with ideas, they're always perfect in your head, but when you try to do them, everything fails. Actually, that's the story of the real Mario Movie isn't it?

While the directors do deserve some scorn for their behavior, I honestly blame the production company more. Why? Because they hired those directors *knowing* that they wanted to make changes. If you hire someone who tells you up front that they want to change your stuff into something else, it's kinda hard to complain when they change your stuff into something else. Especially when you agreed that you would allow it.
So the real problem is that they settled for a random pair of unproven directors who weren't willing to stick with the original script. Mainly because they couldn't find someone else who was willing to work for the money they offered.

I mean, they already had wasted a Lot of time and money hiring actors and creating the script, but didnt even start to film the actual movie. In those circunstances you cant Just predict How things are going to turn out and Just hire whoever seems interested enough due to pure desesperation to get your project out in time. Its Just a shame that they got a shitty couple as directors of their movie that didnt even respect the original script and tried to change It completely to make their own movie.
Sure they could've Just fired them, but they had deadlines to meet and they didnt even start to film a single Scene, and god knows How long It would take to find another """""competent""""" director or directors for their movie.
Also the movie got so drastically changed at that point that they were probably SO TIRED of the New script and the bullshit directors, combined with the pressure from Nintendo and the anger from everyone but the directors Against the directors and their terrible script, everyone involved were like "fuck this movie, Its going to be a disaster Once It releases anyway, Just finish this shit so we can pretend It never happened and also blacklist those fucking directors so they pay for all the headaches they gave to us and our project".
So yeah in the end It was Just a Very unlucky combination of impatience, desesperation, shitty workers, pressure and finally acceptance. With acceptance meaning they accepting It was a failure and Just wanted to release the fucking thing so they could at least forget that event in their lives aswell try to get some Bucks out of It.

I've seen Norm's video before yours months ago and must say two things: One, you covered this on your own eloquently and to a greatly amusing rate~ and two: Using the SMB archive I've found the original script by Jim Jennewein and Tom S. Parker, which absolutely fascinated me. It was a solid fantasy script that would've knocked SMB out of the park at the time. Remember folks, this was 1992 - if Pichi-Hime Kyushutsu Dai Sakusen! could rock the masses, this script would've given us a milestone. Now with all this praise, allow me to nutshell you:
Mario and Luigi are struggling plumbers, their relationship is more than rough. While Mario is a gruff no-nonsense plumber (due to something past in their family), Luigi is an optimistic daydreaming boy who loves his brother no matter what and has a shy relationship with Daisy, who is working in a flower shop. One day a disguised King Koopa kidnaps her and they all go to the Mushroom Kingdom to save her. They meet Toad (an apathetic oportunist who even the mushroom people look down upon) and venture forth to Koopa Castle. During their journey we learn heartbreaking things about each of them, there are some classic cliché moments like splitting ways, death fakeouts but it still works in context. King Koopa is as menacing and ruthless as he should be, he wants to marry Daisy for a reason. Everything during the adventure is adjusted to Mario lore (Thwomps, Bob-Ombs, Raccoon Leaf). While some things will sound odd in description, we can count it to artistic license. All in all, read the script for yourselves and experience the fantastical SMB movie that never was.
EDIT: Daisy is called Hildy in this draft, Princess Hildy so to speak.

Illumination, while they have released some really good (Despicable Me) or at least decent (Sing) films, they're known for not only using very cheap and rushed animation (at least relative to most other 3D animated, feature length films) as well as churning out sequels (which I can't fault them for since it makes money but I still don't like it) but also not doing well with other IP's (to be fair, they've only done 2 Dr. Seuss films but that's 1/5 of their current feature films and both were bad).
All in all, I don't have high hope for this movie. My guess, it will be a cheaply made film. It will likely have a higher budget than most of their other films because of Nintendo's funding but that probably won't improve the quality much. It will be generic story wise, not doing much to expand the Mario world. It will be heavily marketed, mostly appealing to kids and will prominently feature some cute looking creature (Yoshi, Toad, a Goomba, maybe something original). And finally, it will make a crap ton of money and get a sequel it probably doesn't need or deserve, probably around 3 years after the first releases.

This movie had a webcomic sequel that never got finished. It ran from 2013 - 2015. Its coming back in May of 2021. The comic features characters like Wart (who looks like Rush Limbaugh), Mouser (who looks like Dr. Genus from One Punch Man), an actual piranha plant, Shy Guys that look like the Jawas from Star Wars, and Daisy's father who's name is Reznor.

"dad, I don't need shoes that badly" is probably the best thing a kid could ever say to their parent when they do something dumb. This movie sounds like an absolute nightmare and I feel terrible for the actors involved. However, it's one of my favorite cult classic terrible movies. I'm interested to see how the animated movie goes, but I'm worried given who's making it.

Funniest part is in 1986, there was a animated Mario OVA released *only in Japan* about Mario and Luigi being thrown into a Video Game world and Saving Peach, based around the original Mario 2 for NES. Why they didn't localize that, I have no idea. Probably because of the Super Mario Super Show or the Mario TV series.
Fans labeled it as the "Mario Anime" nowadays though.

So, this is the story I was told: The directors had shopped a movie idea around Hollywood with little success. That idea could best be described as “Blade Runner with dinosaurs.” That’s basically the Mario Bros aesthetic when you think about. The directors basically hijacked Mario Bros to make their own movie. Supposedly, they would have gone all the way with Dino Runner hoping that by the time Light Motive realized what they were doing it would be too late.

When I was a kid and my parents took us to the movies, they'd always ask us our favorite part when leaving. The SMB movie was the first time I couldn't think of a favorite part.
edit: also, no knock on Bob Hoskins, because he did a good job, but Danny DeVito as Mario would've been amazing, especially if he said "trayush" at some point.

Fun fact: Americans mostly know Max Headroom for a feature film from the late 80s, but he actually started out as the host of a music video show in the early-mid 80s. They used to show a wide range of mainstream and offbeat videos from Europe and the UK. It used to show on Australian TV just after school would finish. Good times.

If you want something to go away you don't just shut it down, people tend to speak up when you call in legal action. Instead, you let it continue, buy it out, and quietly bury it. It's now a piece of trivia and not "Hey, you remember the time Nintendo sued that guy that did that thing?"

18:37 It's not only easy; it's mostly accurate. There were competing visions of the film, but it seems like they had something working with the script that got all the actors to agree on it. And had they gotten a director who also agreed to it, this film would have been a lot better. If they had actually done what they wanted, it probably would have been worse.
