- In this video I will show you how I use finishing wax paint and stain to achieve this weathered wood look. It’s a fun DIY project, it’s quick and achieves a really awesome effect!
Items you will need for this project.
-unfinished wood
-gloves and cloth
-stain
-finishing wax (I used Minwax but you can use any finishing wax)
-paint of your choice (I like to use a spray can for convenience 😁) you can also roll on whatever paint you choose.
*i do not prime as I want the Weathered effect and I like the stain peaking through a bit.

Great video! I'm going to try this out for a DIY photo backdrop 👍
Thanks a lot.. saw a ton of youtube ideas.. and this one worked out to be the best
Wow! Who would have thought?.....your favorite stain some paste wax for a weathered look. Super 👌 great technique. It looks so good! Thank you and I love your channel ❤.
Looks amazing
Super cool !!!! Thanks for the video and sharing your technics .
My pleasure!
I did this today 03-19-23. I experimented with many ways to achieve a chippy paint look. I watched online to do this and decided on this. Turned out great since I decided to use the same wax to finish the project. (1) I learn you have to go heavy on the wax not in AREA coverage but the part you want the paint o come off. (2) Wait till the cover paint over the wax is 100% Dry. All of it. (3) You may have to use a CHIP or disposable cheap brushes to apply the Finish paint over the wax as to not contaminate your expensive brush with the wax. I didnt use a scrapper to take off the over coat paint i used a wire (NYLON) brush on my drill to take off the excess over paint. I stained the bare wood. Coat of under color such as a pastel chalk paint. then Crackle Media, then the wax then the white over paint. Wait for it to dry they used my nylon wheel to take off the excess. In hindsight the Crackle media was probably not needed. Will post my results soon
Used this technique to frame a bathroom mirror and I could not be more pleased. Everyone that has seen the results rave about the mirror's new look!
So happy to hear this!
I've been watching a bunch of these. Your's is the best so far.
Thank you
I sure appreciate that ❤️🙏🏼

Perfect. Im building a closet organizer and wife wants this finish. Thanks.
Nice! Hope you like it!
Nice ! Thanks!
Love this! Thank you!!
You are so welcome!
Great video. I am about to do some barn doors think I will try this!
Go for it! Excited for you!
I just found you. Trying to make a craft area in my downstairs closet. Starting with a floating desk. I love your work!!! And your videos are very helpful! Keep up the good work! Thank you so much for sharing.
I’m going to try this technique on my desk top. I’ve stained it, but I don’t love the stain. Have plenty of chalk paint around so I hope it will be ok. If not, I’ll just use another piece of wood and do something else with this one.
I am trying my best to start doing more things like this as I’ve found over the past couple years making things is my passion.
Thanks again!
I’m Holly. My husband’s account so just to clarify dave didn’t write this. Haha.
Haha hi Holly! And thank you for watching ! So glad you enjoy doing DIYs and thanks so much for watching!
Lovvvvvvvvve lovvvvvvvvve no extra talking, quick & toooo the poooiint!!!!!😘❤😊😁👊 nice!!! Alot better I'm thinkn than the vaseline I was using lol ugh
I’ve totally done that too it’s messy haha
And thank you for watching ❤️
Oh wow , thanks
Thank you for this great video! I'm going to try this, but will regular paint instead of spray paint. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
great video, so to the point. I would love to try this with a turquoise paint instead of white and see how it turns out!
Great idea!
I like the paste wax method👌 it made a beautiful piece!
Austin Steele thanks Austin! It’s a fun technique
LOVE🥳
I’ve heard of people getting the same effect using Vaseline instead of paste wax. It’s cheaper and doesn’t have noxious fumes.
Can you do this with a piece of furniture that is already stained and finished. Will the paint wax still work?
How does it look in the back where the cords are connected to the wall outlet? Creative work!
I have white painted shed door , I want to keep it a bit distressed. Underneath is raw wood which I like. What would be the fastest/easiest way to do? Thanks
👍👍👍
Can you seal it with a poly after?
I love this look can this be done on any furniture type? I have wood cabinet and I dont want to strip down to the bare wood.
Thank you! You know, I’m not actually sure! I build from scratch normally so I would hate to say yes and then have it not work for you. Hah. I would definitely say it’s worth a shot at experimenting
What about on a regular door to a pantry
Would i need tp sand it its already smooth and white but want to change to distress look
How long did u let the paint over wax dry? Tyvm
You can also use a candle, just rub it on the wood. A lot cheaper
Can you do this same method on beadwood? Instead of using spray paint, just use regular paint?? I love this!!
I think so! I’d give it a test on a piece that’s a scrap but I don’t see why it wouldn’t work! Thanks for watching
Do you seal the finished wood with anything? Polyurethane? I like the wax look out for chalk paint, but I don’t know how that would work over stain and spray paint
Wanting to do this for a farmhouse table. My only concern is iij want to put some coats of varnish on it afterwards. Any idea on how to get all the residual wax off without damaging the paint and stain?
I normally use an acrylic finish. Are you doing this to the top of the table? if so, you may want to use vasaline instead of wax, its a little easier to make sure you have removed it all. If you are just doing the base I wouldnt worry too much because if more of the wax falls off later it just adds to the look of the piece, right? thats one of the reasons I love this style, when my kids kick it or bump chairs it just adds to the look! haha
How would you do 3 colors?
How to make a weathered wood picture frame
Great vid! Would this work w chalk paint instead of spray paint? :)
It should, I havent tried it myself but im sure it will work great!
I'm wanting to do this technique over the top of cabinets that have already been stained and sealed with polycrylic. Will it work to put the wax over the polycrylic and then do the latex paint or would I need to sand off the stain and start over? The cabinets are installed so hoping to avoid starting from scratch. Thanks so much for any advice you have!
I imagine it would work great!
Ok, great! Thanks for your response! @@EternalHarvestDecor
I have that same wax but would it adhere to a cheap 99cent plastic frame so I could do a wethered look on it?
Not sure never tried on this material
What about on a large scale, say a table? Regular paint or chalk paint or what used instead of spray cans?
Just a regular latex lightly rolled with a roller.
Would you recommend this technique for something like kitchen cabinets that you would be touching often? Or does it leave a waxy feel and should only be left to projects like picture frame?
good question, I think it would be fine if you seal it before use. I would use a polycrilic or something similar after.
I've seen a video where they painted with a white semi gloss and then went back with a stain for 5-10 minutes before wiping off and it uses a lot less product. That may be your best bet for heavily used surfaces.
How long donyou let the wax set for after painting before scrapping?
Cassie Heimann only a few min, then I paint, it doesn’t really need to be well set since you will just be removing a lot any way 🙌🏼 good luck!
Can you use regular paint instead of spray paint? I want to do this to my beams in my living room
Yes I think so if you’re careful not to push or move the wax it will work
What kind of sandpaper could I use that will have the best effects?
I live gator sand paper! It’s at Walmart lowes and Menards
What can I use in place of the wax?? I can’t find any at my local Walmart!
You can use Vaseline or petroleum jelly too!
Do you have to seal it or anything? Like with polyurethane? Sorry I don’t know much about it.
No prob yes a water based clear coat would work great!
Can you get the same effect with latex paint??
yep if you use finishing wax underneath!
This is my favorite way of all of them on here which I will try on my dresser. Do I then seal the finished product like a dresser for example?
karfox100 I do seal my pieces sometimes if I want it to be really weathered I don’t and I just let it continue to weather. You could poly or rewax the whole thing
karfox100 thank you for watching and the kind words
Can you wax over the wood again for another color coat?
Sure!
Could this be used for a headboard?
sure not sure why not
Hi did you use water base or oil paint?..good job 👌
I’ve used regular latex and also spray paint, both work well 🙌🏼
Here is my issue with this. After you are done applying a finish such as Lacquer or poly would be impossible with that wax on there
Yes that’s true, I usually just wax over the whole piece. Wax is a great sealer for items like this, no poly needed. However I have used poly on tables with this technique and just made sure I got all the wax removed and light sanded and then polyd it worked really well
Can you us any paint or just spray paint
Any paint will do, spray paint is the easiest to put on without disturbing the wax
Could I stain over already painted wood, then wax then re paint?
No, you would have to sand the paint off first. 😉
I really like your smile wink
My white paint turned yellow from using the stain. 😣
You can use primer first if this happens. Spray it here you want the paint. Then the paint and scrape as usual
Have u tried that technique painting with a brush?
I’ve done this with a roller but not with a fresh I don’t paint with a brush very often I’m sorry it would probably work though if you did light stroke
Why not just use wood that's already stained or brown/ cherry in nature etc., add white chalk/ other paint then dabb/ scrape off.. 🤔
You could totally do that too but this offers a lot more control as to what color is underneath. Either way though
Too messy for me.. thanks.
nice... for a woman.
