I really appreciated President Duterte’s standing up for the Philippines’s independence, to just bending over for the US. The current government has just given in to America, provoking China rather than cooperating, building tons of new bases.
The Philippines can never be politically independent if it is controlled by the US military (as Japan, Korea, Germany, etc are). Look at Norway and Sweden which also have given up their sovereignty by letting the US take over the military with its 10 or 20 bases. They are totally in America’s back pocket now.
Also, Mr. Duterte’s hardline approach to drugs and crime was a good approach.

Duterte made sure his country had good relations with a great power that happens to be a neighbor that has had trade relations with, but has never invaded the Philippines for thousands of years. Unlike the current president, he did not invite back the duplicitous, hypocritical defender of "freedom and democracy" that colonized his country for 50 years, wiping out 10% of the Filipino population in its war of conquest - plus grant it more military bases that could well turn the PI into another Ukraine!

US propaganda in the philippines is extremely powerful the invasion of japan during WWII created a myth of US as a savior of the philippines sweeping everything brutal they did to filipinos under the rug
you can see it very clearly in the philippine educational system if you learn history here in schools there is more bias against the spanish colonization and japanese occupiers, than the americans, in textbooks they are portrayed as heroes so during childhood you will developed a thinking that it is better for the philippines to be colonized by america than the spanish and japanese and wish they never leave

All these comments r very enlightening and sad to me ! I worked out of our manila UN office for 28 years. I did have a Philippino boss for many of those years - plus interactions with my Philippino work mates. & I can honestly say I never knew Americans were so despised. Better luck with the Chinese ( btw I have been married to a Chinese for the last 30 years - with a 28 yo son - so I also like em too)

@@ericpoochie a perceived traitor who kept things peaceful rather than a warmongering American puppet? I'll take the traitor 10 times out of 10.
If you believe that the Americans will protect us come hell or high water, I suggest you study the history books.
They pulled out of South Vietnam when they got overwhelmed by the North Vietnamese during the Vietnam war. Did they help the South Vietnamese people? No.
When they invaded Iraq for alleged weapons of mass destruction, which was later found to be non-existent, did they help the Iraqis get back on their feet?
What happened to Syria? Afghanistan? Ukraine? Are there American soldiers helping Ukraine on the battlefield? None.
Because at the end of the day, all they will do is to protect their self-interests. They supply weapons and arms to ally countries. But have you ever questioned where those weapons are made? Boeing, Raytheon, Lockheed Martin. All American. All benefiting their own economy. It's how the U.S. dollar stays relevant. When there is war.
So yes, I will take the traitor, rather than the one who sucks the toes of the Americans for a living.
