    3 chords, some intuitive strumming and lyrics that touch our eternal desires.
    Beauty is simplicity and simplicity is truth.
    Thank you Stephan Stills, this has stayed with me since the first time I heard it.
    And thank you Lauren, for a wonderful tutorial.

    I love that tune,it's simple, only 3 chords, I love sailing tunes or Jimmy Buffet kind of feel,I used to sail the Pacific on a carrier,I'd love to learn to sail one day.
    Keep smiling, your a great teacher,that's where you belong .
    And I'm thinking of a Taylor acoustic, black is 👌

    Great tutorial for Southern Cross, Lauren...well done! I'll be sharing this video with my grandchildren during my next lesson with them... I've been playing for 50+ years and teaching my grandchildren for 2...your videos make teaching the music I love so much easier for their learning styles. Thank you!

    Thank you for sharing this. Very helpful! Those suspended cords work so well on a 12 string. Some song like this just cry out for a 12 string.

  • @JackKirbyFan
    @JackKirbyFan Před 2 lety +1

    Lauren this was a song I learned on my own very early on in my guitar lessons and I loved it. It's SO simple a pattern. I wanted my instructor to work with me but he wanted me to understand the chord theory of suspended chords first so he had me hold off. So for those who care about such techno babble.
    A major chord is Root, 3rd note and 5th note of a major scale. In our case, a D major chord is D, F#, A
    A suspended (or sus chord) drops the third and adds either the 2nd or 4th note in the scale giving it that distinctive sound. It doesn't have to be a major chord to do this with but in this song.
    D sus 2 is D, ->E, A (no F#) (E is the 2nd note of the D major scale (D, E)
    D sus 4 is D, ->G, A (no F#) (G is the 4th note in the D major scale (D, E, F, G)
    Another great song that adds that is Woman by John Lennon and my favorite example of a suspended chord. It's literally the first chord in the song.
    Thanks!

    While all your videos that I've watched have been good, I think this one is the best. You took a very intimidating and complex song (by that equally complex writer/guitarist, Stephen Stills), broke it down into simple parts and made it accessible to all us aspiring guitarists. Excellent!

    I noticed that you strum down at a upward angle on your pick,I always strum down straight, my pick is aimed straight at my guitar, never down never up,plus I play with the butt end side,I'm real insecure when it comes to hitting my chords,I don't hold the pick on the butt end,but in reverse because it gives me a thicker tone,I just wanted to share that with you,plus I mute certain chords to set a certain mood while I'm singing..🥰 Thanks for the Eye opening lesson Mrs.Bateman, I always leave with something good...
