My dad just passed away tonight. He was 93. This song and video was always a favorite of his. Playing this in his memory. Rest In Peace Dad. Miss you already.
Wishing you peace of heart and mind, Eric. I lost my father 18 years ago and not a day passes that I don't think of him and miss him greatly. May time and happy memories of your time with him ease your pain.
When I was in the US Navy I crossed the Atlantic 6 times (3 Mediterranean deployments of 6+ months each). I know very well what it's like to stand the "midnight watch." Something that civilians might not be aware of is that at night US Navy ships go dark. Only a few red lights are allowed on the exterior of the ship. When there is a new moon, and without the ambient light from cities and land, the magnitude of the darkness is stunning. On nights like that one of my favorite things to do was to grab a pillow and blanket and go out on the helo deck and just stare at the stars. It seemed like a million stars and planets. Sometimes I would spot a satellite silently crossing the sky. This song makes me recall the good times from those deployments. When you spend a lot of time at sea it is amazing what you will see. I've seen numerous whales, hundreds of dolphins, and thousands of flying fish dancing across the surface like they were choreographed. One time I saw the sea lit with phosphorescence across an area at least a square mile. Those moments changed me forever. They made me aware of how microscopically small we are in the universe. They made me respect nature and realize that it is OUR responsibility to take care of our blue planet so that our children's children can see the same wonders I've seen.
I’m a retired guy who lives in Minneapolis. Most days, I walk around a nearby lake named Harriet. This is the first song I hear on my playlist. I sing along with it, no doubt making my neighbors and any poor soul I happen to pass shake their heads. But, I’ll swear I sound just like Stephen Stills!

As a member of tbe generation that enjoyed this song when it first came out and now in the twilight of my years I still love this song and its meaning...it says so much of love won and love lost. When I close my eyes for the last time this song will be playing in my soul.
My Marine brother got to sail the Southern Cross. This song was popular then and he loved it.He lived and died a Marine! I love you, Bubba! Semper Fi!❤
You are one of the few that got it right. Crosby could harmonize. That was the extend of his talent. Sorry for his passing, but assigning "Legend" status to this guy is stretching it quite a bit.
@@keithm9337 So true. And this song shows there were many others who could step in to do the harmony just as well if not better. And they did not bring the ballast, drama & ill will Crosby did.
I read all the comments left here for this song and it bought me to tears. I first saw The Southern Cross while sailing to Panama many years ago. It touched me just like it did many a sailor my age who grew up listening to CSYN. I remember being on dog watch (the hours just before sunrise) and reminiscing about my youth and the gifts of music we enjoyed in the early 70's. While in Panama, I made my way down to the San Blas Islands, a group of 400 islands belonging to the Kuna Indians. I lived among them on my sailboat Last Laugh for many years, learning their culture and each one by name. It was the pinnacle decade capping a lifetime of sailing. Now I'm a broken old man, scarred by a stroke and years of too much sun. I recall seeing the Southern Cross for the last time. I broke down crying in the cockpit alone. I knew I'd never go to sea again. I'm crying just typing this. Mother Ocean kept me safe for a lifetime. Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young kept me entertained. I have lived a blessed life.
Wow what an interesting life. I am a month shy of 73, "and all that I have left...is... and music is her name." I used to have a lot and lived a lot. I gambled too much, and played the stocks. Now I am very much in pain continuously, and the doctors are too stupid to figure out what is wrong. Now I'm a broken man (sorry to plagiarize your words), but it just fits. I live in Florida, for the past 30 plus years, and love the ocean. Never had a schooner (LOL) or sailboat, but the Lake Worth pier is only 7 miles from me,,, so I go there and ponder my life and my relevance to it. What will happen in the end. For me the sooner the better, I am having a very hard time being in pain all the time. I did the 'stuff' we all did in the 60's, but not into that now, and the oxycodone does nothing.... and you have to go through hell to get it legally. Man, I am with you and understand your feelings. Too bad we don't live close to each other, you'd be my best friend!
That was excellent. I've never seen the southern cross but I can imagine it. God placed those stars in the sky that way for a reason. Obviously. "What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten." And "the promise of the coming day." Did they forget the last verse or was I daydreaming? "We cheated and we lied and we tested, we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested; somebody fine will come along and make me forget about loving you and the southern cross." CSN. Thank you ❤️
@@jacksonmorganfroghin4815 The Southern Cross becomes visible around Nicaragua going south. It's a four star constellation of a cross tilted over to the right around 20⁰ more or less. It's importance and reverence comes from this: If you draw a line from the top of the cross down the bottom of the cross, then extend the line to the horizon, where they intersect is precisely Due South. It can get tiresome sailing on a passage, seeing nothing for days. When you see the Cross, it's as if you finally got your bearings after being lost deep in the woods!
David Crosby passed away last night. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Mr Crosby. Condolences to your family. You will live with us through your music till our bell tolls too.
I just turned 72, have been sailing since I was 5 years old. I remember this song, CSN, have always been one of my favorite bands. I have seen the Southern Cross several times in my sailing adventures and I think of this song every time. Keep the sails full and the sun on your face. Enjoy the journey and the music!
The video, sunlight on the water, is as beautiful as the lyric and the harmonies. I think this is truly an absolutely perfect song. RIP, David. I am glad you had a good many years sober and healthy, and I thank you for all you left us.
When I was cocky and 17, I didn't give much respect to this wonderful song. Now at 48, it came to mind and I had to hear it. Time has taught me many lessons. And also good taste. Love it.
I assume that you were on a David Crosby song kick that night and played more than this song. I hope you played some Byrds. I saw CSN at Gathering Of The Vibes 2009. A beautiful performance. I actually do prefer them without Neil Young.
"I have been around the world" in this harmony gives me chills. What a time to live when this was written. I used to live in Avalon during this time in the summers. Remember all the noisy bars. Life was great in the 70s and 80s!
Spent 9 months in Australia several years ago. Every time I saw the Southern Cross while walking, especially out in the boonies, this song popped into mind.
Can you imagine what these guys were thinking as they were recording this and listened to playback? They had to have known this was not only a hit, but an all-timer. Pure bliss!
Doesn't matter what you cross the southern in rather it is a 20 footer or a 26 footer or 120 footer...thing is is you crossed it. Be proud because few do out of millions on this planet.
RIP David Crosby..thank you for so many great songs of my life. My father was the Captain of the Texas ATM training vessel most of my childhood. This was 'our song' and definitely my favorite CSN tune. God Bless his family and friends
I used to crank the album up & sing all the songs when my folks went shopping on Saturday afternoons. That was several decades ago, & I still remember all the words, all the music...funny how things like this get in your head & never leave...
This was my father's favorite song while growing up in Santa Monica, California. He passed away 3 months ago at 55 - i love listening to this song to remind me of him.
You can almost feel the deck under your feet and the sound of the sails and the hull as it cuts the water. The wind in your hair. This song takes me on a mini vacation. The night sky with a million stars.
This song transports me right back to the 80’s and I can smell the smells and feel the feelings just like I was right back in the room of my childhood home. I was almost 13 when this song came out and I remember so clearly hearing it play on Casey Kasems top 40 on Saturday morning. I would start off in my room and in the summer, I would end up laying on the roof of my house to get a tan while listening to the broadcast. The nostalgia of it all results in melancholy but, the memories are bittersweet.
Certainly can Rob have followed csny right from the start harmony 1st class I'm very critical of today's so called music they wouldn't know a decent song if the heard one
Even though this is labeled as a CS&N album, David Crosby didn't play much of a part on it. It was recorded as a Stills & Nash album, but the studio refused to release it if it wasn't a CS&N album. This was during the worst of his drug addiction, and he was not much use in recording. But they managed to get a little out of him. They used an older track Crosby has recorded a year earlier and added their vocal harmonies to it, and that was enough to make the studio happy. PS. On this song, the harmonies are provided by Tim Schmidt and Art Garfunkel.
If you didn't know, the Southern Cross is a constellation that sailors use in the southern hemisphere to find the pole, so they can calculate their latitude. There is no southern "polaris" or any star directly at the pole, but the southern cross constellation points directly to it. If you line up the direction of the "bottom/Jesus' feet" of the southern cross and make a perpendicular line from the middle of two bright "pointer stars" you can find the celestial pole using a sextant (a weird, complicated telescope with a swing thingy, which is so important to celestial navigation that it has its own constellation named after it and without it the Americas would probably never be found by Europeans until the 1800's-1900's), and therefore your latitude. If you ever find yourself below the equator, such as in Australia or South Africa, look for the southern cross! Edit: Also, if you ever get lost in the night without a compass, go towards the big dipper or Casseopeia (a bright W-shaped constellation) to go north in the northern hemisphere, and if you are in the southern hemisphere, go towards the little and bright cross in the sky (there is sometimes another, larger and dimmer cross called Cygnus in the southern skies, it does not point towards the south). You can also use these constellations to find landmasses, say, if you are lost sailing off the East Coast of the USA, sail to the left of the big dipper to return to civilization, though you will likely not end up exactly where you started. This is how slaves escaped to Canada and the Northern USA, they ran towards the big dipper. This information was actually passed on by a famous song, named "Follow the Drinking Gourd," which slaves often sung while working to relay information about celestial navigation to freedom. (I decided to add this here since people seem to like the navigation stuff). Edit 2: Here's something I found that explains it better: czcams.com/video/vjDbMe_N4Ns/video.html
The Southern Cross constellation appears on the national flags of Australia & New Zealand, among others. It indeed does symbolize their being in the Southern hemisphere. It's no coincidence either that these nations are predominately of Christian heritage.
This song is almost mystical. 'i have my ship and all my flags are a flyin' She is all that I have left and teaching is her name. Any older person can relate and fill in the blank with what their purpose in life still is.
. . . Think about how many times I have fallen, spirits are using me, larger voice is calling . . . This song gets to the heart of the matter. I first saw Stephen Stills when he was with the Buffalo Springfield, back in the 60's in California. This is when you could go backstage or just sit on the dock in the back where the bands would come in. We got to meet everybody. It was the Swing Auditorium where all the up and coming bands would play. At this particular concert, The Doors were the opening band - they had not even released their first album. Who knew all these folks would become legends. I remember sitting on the stage along with many others and we were just hanging out talking to everyone and The Doors were setting up their own drums and guitars. Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furray(sp?) all came out and sat down with us to listen to this new band "The Doors". I am so glad I grew up in this time of change and timeless music.
When their music was their language & their message ... & they devoted themselves to it ... & it showed... focused on their genius .. not diluted by diversions into political stuff .. just pure magic.
That's not odd at all Heather. This reminds me of my husband that I lost in 1982. One of his favorite songs. I don't think I actually heard it until he passed.
Had an 80%blockage of the corroded artery and a mini stroke November last year, found out about the mini stroke this last November, thru me for a loop, knew about everything else....I have a different type of outlook now,it could've been alot worse,I m lucky
I sing great 4th person harmony in the car....cat enjoys it. This song brings back college at Berkeley in the 60s when we were long haired flower children.
Welt! Thats' the rub isn't it? If music is a fad or "poppy" designed to make a hit instead of tell the truth, It is forgotten like the dixie chicks. But when it is still relevant in another time beyond the time in which it was written, it is Art!
Great music some 50 years ago, even better now-a-days. Approaching 70 in a few months, listen to these folks as I head out. Life does not get much better.
I was stationed with the 1st Marine Division when this song came out. The First Marine Division logo has the Southern cross as one of its elements representing the Division' presence in the southern hemisphere during WW2. This song takes me back to a place in time I'll never forget.
Thank God for Marine;s, which these weak and lazy sob's on here will never understand. Without the Marines, we nearly lost Guadalcanal in '42. R.I.P., Sergeant Basilone.
Good music is when you haven't heard a song or record for 10 to 20 years...then you hear it...and it's still as good as when it came out...music like this.
Music today is so sad! Twenty years from now, no one will remember any of it. But the music of the 70's, & 80's will live on forever! CSN & Y helped to define an entire generation and rightly so! Great Music.
Cold glass, 3 fingers of Jack 2 cubes, sit on the patio and watch the sunset in the Western sky. Damn relaxing CSN playing in background. At 61 this is the life
So unbelievably saddened to hear of Daivid Crosby passing, this was one of my most favorite groups very early in life and I have kept your music in my heart and memories, RIP DC.......
As a small boat circumnavigator, this song brings tears to my eyes every time it mentions Southern Cross or Marquesas because I'm reliving that magic time. Thank you CSN!
Russ Ramey you lost it when you became old and failed to relate to new sounds, new grooves, its out there you have to look and feel. One either stays limber, green and embraces the living or becomes brittle, dry and embraces death. Each generation states they had best sound, life, morals, values. Those who came before are old fashioned, those who follow have no clue. Rock is not dead, its alive in Ohio, Nebraska, Seattle, Austin, Nashville, every where I have been some body is pouring their heart out. Just listen man
***** I didn't mention age, which has nothing to do with anything other than the physiological age of your body. I said he was old, he fails to relate and feel the new sounds and grooves. My beloved Grandmother could find the groove that Diesel Boy threw out in his deep house beats, rode along to the sound of the Beastie Boys and jammed with Red Hot. My favorite genre was laid down on wax by three to four generations past. I found it by looking, and feel it cause its real. Your mind and taste are either open, supple and flexible like a new borne babe, or dry, brittle and old like a dead tree... Keep up or get passed, live in the now, not the was, the golden years never were, but have always been.
+Mycomment isuseless old and brittle, slowly turning to rust and dust trying to " catch up with the sun as it catch as it races up from behind you again " you sound old. put your rose colored head phones on and listen to the past, for in the now the beautiful sounds you don't understand and can't hear just leave you behind in the mire of a closed mind.
If you’re in the car and this comes on, it’s your sacred duty as a human being to turn it up and sing along as loud as you can.

Totally. I don't know what it is about this song but it is deep to me.
✨
This song reaches my happy place
I have been where Steven was emotionally a couple of times myself.
Agreed
20 years ago my wife left me, twice. I sold everything ( gave her the house ) and flew to Ft. Lauderdale. I got work on a 162 ft. yacht headed south and when we crossed the equator I put this song on and cried.. and cried... and cried
Geoffrey Russell
With ya bro painful stuff
Did it help? At least you were brave enough to go for it. Wishing you the best.
Only Pollywogs cry when they cross the Equator. :-)
Geoffrey Russell this song my friend is that powerful,I can relate to you my brothers..
When he says "larger spirits are calling me" he is a star child
As a member of tbe generation that enjoyed this song when it first came out and now in the twilight of my years I still love this song and its meaning...it says so much of love won and love lost.
When I close my eyes for the last time this song will be playing in my soul.
"I have my Ship and all Her Flags are a-Flyin' She Is All That I Have Left and Music Is Her Name" how awesome is that???
Fine song and Dreams allowed🙂😘🇧🇻
Perfect lyric
Incredible song!!!!!
@@lindawarrick961 lots of memories with that tune 👍
They just don't make music like they used to
I had a 30 ft sailboat and this song was played every time I went out.
I'm 71 this song and this band return me to the days of my youth. Kudos to these three talented guys. To me, this music is almost spiritual.
Music is spiritual
I'm 27 and I'm hoping we can undo the damage done by modern music, and get back to this stuff. The harmonies in these songs are just so uplifting.
Don't know who wrote this, but I am NOT 71!!!!!!
Me too, we were there when the Southern Cross set sail on this voyage.
@@jeanmurie1135 David Crosby... of Crosby, Stills, Nash & (Neil) Young. CSNY...
RIP David Crosby. Thank you for five decades of great music.
My Marine brother got to sail the Southern Cross. This song was popular then and he loved it.He lived and died a Marine! I love you, Bubba! Semper Fi!❤
Semper fi, May God's face shine upon you.
I'm trying to go through my brother's things, 💔 Semper Fidelis
Semper Fi! May the good memories of your brother sustain you and bring a smile to your face. ♥️ Peace.
My son is a brother-in-arms.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Crosby, thank you for the beautiful harmony.
The harmony you're hearing here is Timothy B. Schmit. Croz is not on this recording (though you see him in the video). Not good days for him.
Imagine three guys singing in harmony together, a rare talent. David got hooked on cocaine, did jail time but never recovered the man he was.
Rest in Peace David Crosby - Along with your spirit, your music will live on forever.
Amen
@@lukeshiva I'm with you Bro!!
That was excellent. I've never seen the southern cross but I can imagine it. God placed those stars in the sky that way for a reason. Obviously.
"What Heaven brought you and me cannot be forgotten."
And "the promise of the coming day."
Did they forget the last verse or was I daydreaming?
"We cheated and we lied and we tested, we never failed to fail, it was the easiest thing to do. You will survive being bested; somebody fine will come along and make me forget about loving you and the southern cross." CSN. Thank you ❤️
@@jacksonmorganfroghin4815 The Southern Cross becomes visible around Nicaragua going south. It's a four star constellation of a cross tilted over to the right around 20⁰ more or less. It's importance and reverence comes from this:
If you draw a line from the top of the cross down the bottom of the cross, then extend the line to the horizon, where they intersect is precisely Due South.
It can get tiresome sailing on a passage, seeing nothing for days. When you see the Cross, it's as if you finally got your bearings after being lost deep in the woods!
David Crosby passed away last night. Thank you for sharing your talent with us, Mr Crosby. Condolences to your family. You will live with us through your music till our bell tolls too.
dear god, those men can harmonize.
The addition of Timothy B Scmit as background vocalist doesn't hurt either.
@@steveb6052 And Art Garfunkel. David Crosby never sang on this track.
RIP David Crosby. Thank you for the music. You will never be forgotten 🙏
The video, sunlight on the water, is as beautiful as the lyric and the harmonies. I think this is truly an absolutely perfect song. RIP, David. I am glad you had a good many years sober and healthy, and I thank you for all you left us.
40 years later and it still brings a tear to my eye. Funny how talent can do that.
When I was cocky and 17, I didn't give much respect to this wonderful song. Now at 48, it came to mind and I had to hear it. Time has taught me many lessons. And also good taste. Love it.
Life has a way of doing that. It's called wisdom.
One of the finest songs ever created.
The harmonies are exquisite!
One of their best ever! I never get tired of listening to it.
Absolutely- YOU ARE SOOOOO RIGHT
Can't agree with you more
Has to be one of the greatest songs ever.
Ya man
Tonight I am playing this song for the memory of David Crosby. A soulful songwriter. May he be sailing free tonight
I assume that you were on a David Crosby song kick that night and played more than this song. I hope you played some Byrds. I saw CSN at Gathering Of The Vibes 2009. A beautiful performance. I actually do prefer them without Neil Young.
Good call
This will always be one of my favorites 💔💔 RIP David
"I have been around the world" in this harmony gives me chills. What a time to live when this was written. I used to live in Avalon during this time in the summers. Remember all the noisy bars. Life was great in the 70s and 80s!
Great song!.. TIMELESS.. the Southern Cross is on our flag.. cheers from New Zealand 👍🇳🇿
Spent 9 months in Australia several years ago. Every time I saw the Southern Cross while walking, especially out in the boonies, this song popped into mind.
I'm on my first visit to Oceania, and you better believe I sang this the first time I spotted the Southern Cross.
“Spirits are using me” I love this quote.!
Can you imagine what these guys were thinking as they were recording this and listened to playback? They had to have known this was not only a hit, but an all-timer. Pure bliss!
southern cross is a classic legendary song that will never die. written and composed by a classic band who will live on forever.
original written by the Curtis brothers, rewritten by csn
No words can say what such an awrsome song
Doesn't matter what you cross the southern in rather it is a 20 footer or a 26 footer or 120 footer...thing is is you crossed it. Be proud because few do out of millions on this planet.

I’m 55 and when I was 15 in the summer of 1983 I remember this being played on MTV a lot. Thank you for the memories David Crosby. Fly High!!!!🙏🏻
RIP David Crosby..thank you for so many great songs of my life. My father was the Captain of the Texas ATM training vessel most of my childhood. This was 'our song' and definitely my favorite CSN tune. God Bless his family and friends
I was lucky enough to have seen the Southern Cross when in Australia. I literally cried.
I see it every night :) (Argentina)
Well I’ve been as far as Virginia and I saw crosses too.
I saw it on a beach on a pitch black night in Brazil. Incredible stars.
I too had that great experience to see the southern Cross.

Just like fine wine, this amazing song becomes better as it ages!!
I used to crank the album up & sing all the songs when my folks went shopping on Saturday afternoons. That was several decades ago, & I still remember all the words, all the music...funny how things like this get in your head & never leave...
Hi. How are you doing Cindy 🌹🌹
funny how music blasted when parents went shopping on Saturdays...your house, mine and how many others. Good Times.
This song is a classic as well as a masterpiece.
Can’t believe that when you search “Top CSN songs” this is often not listed in the Top 10. I think it’s magic and their best song.
If you ask me to rate this song, I'll tell you this is their best song ever.
@@josephsylvester8810 Amen to that!
Seriously.. this is the DEFINING song of CSN .. period
I agree...I just come back & listen to it several times to get my heart right. It's just flat beautiful.
Maybe because Crosby doesn't actually sing on this studio version.
This was my father's favorite song while growing up in Santa Monica, California. He passed away 3 months ago at 55 - i love listening to this song to remind me of him.
David jervis im sorry for your loss my dad hes 89 loves this song too he lived there but my bros moved him to sfv ....
David, dude I'm sorry, that's young to lose your Dad. Hold on to the memories my friend ☮️
Such great harmony you don't hear this stuff today
+Roy G Wetherop Isn't that the truth my friend! I can hear the words and I sing along Loud and Proud!
Certainly can Rob have followed csny right from the start harmony 1st class I'm very critical of today's so called music they wouldn't know a decent song if the heard one
One of the best performances ever.
PS. On this song, the harmonies are provided by Tim Schmidt and Art Garfunkel.
i know right and im ten
Our southern cross is the cross Jesus died on. Maybe we’ll figure this stuff out one day.
thank you i just learned something
The Southern Cross constellation appears on the national flags of Australia & New Zealand, among others. It indeed does symbolize their being in the Southern hemisphere. It's no coincidence either that these nations are predominately of Christian heritage.
Awesome, the more you know. ❤
@@Shawney-jf6kc yes, but this still helped sailors. And it's awesome sailors call it this. It gives God credit in all things.
This song is almost mystical. 'i have my ship and all my flags are a flyin' She is all that I have left and teaching is her name. Any older person can relate and fill in the blank with what their purpose in life still is.
RIP David Crosby. The music that Crosby stills and Nash made touched many parts of my life and still will I am sure.
Something so special about this song ,It brings me to a spiritual place as odd as that sounds. The harmony is perfect and emotion so pure...
Play it again Heather! Thank you! (Try Sebastian on my page.)

That's not odd at all Heather. This reminds me of my husband that I lost in 1982. One of his favorite songs. I don't think I actually heard it until he passed.

Russ Ramey Around the same time rap came out?
Russ Ramey you lost it when you became old and failed to relate to new sounds, new grooves, its out there you have to look and feel. One either stays limber, green and embraces the living or becomes brittle, dry and embraces death. Each generation states they had best sound, life, morals, values. Those who came before are old fashioned, those who follow have no clue. Rock is not dead, its alive in Ohio, Nebraska, Seattle, Austin, Nashville, every where I have been some body is pouring their heart out. Just listen man
*****
I didn't mention age, which has nothing to do with anything other than the physiological age of your body.
+Mycomment isuseless
old and brittle, slowly turning to rust and dust trying to " catch up with the sun as it catch as it races up from behind you again " you sound old. put your rose colored head phones on and listen to the past, for in the now the beautiful sounds you don't understand and can't hear just leave you behind in the mire of a closed mind.
A seriously good song. Then, now and forever.
