    I remember this game like it was yesterday. 2nd year student with no money, I rented a TV from granada TV for $8 a month just for the playoffs.
    Those were Tha days.

    ***** The commentators for the ESPN broadcast (which is what this clip is from) were Ken Wilson and Mickey Redmond. In Canada, this game was called by Don Wittman, Dick irvin, and John Davidson.

    You couldn't have said it better. The Oilers just never seemed to have control of the series, & Calgary played AS WELL AS THEY COULD HAVE POSSIBLY HAVE PLAYED. As the guy mentioned below, in 84 Calgary took the Oilers to 7 games in the quarterfinals, In this series, they had John Tonelli & Joe Mullen. That helped. Still. the fact the Oilers lost three games at home is amazing. Just when it seemed they had control, getting 2 goals at the end of the 2nd period to tie, IT happened.

    The underdog final of all time. Vernon and Roy were both rookies. Calgary beat Edmonton (the Steve Smith/Fuhr mishap).
    I was at this game (age 10), thirteen rows from the ice behind the Habs bench(section P, row 13). A Habs fan ran down into our section just before the game ended and started mimicing my tears and taunting me. There's a clip of him jumping on the ice after the game ended. I thought of him immediately when Calgary beat the Habs in 1989.
    Roy was so good.

    @ih8japscraps This Habs team might very well have had the lowest winning percentage of all Stanley Cup winners,and that even includes those from the Original Six Era and even long before that.

    @industrialsun You still have to beat somebody in a 7 game series to either advance or win the Stanley Cup,regardless of who that might be.

  • @landrykkb
    @landrykkb Před 12 lety

    You might be right,I'd have to look that up.But these Habs had 20 other teams to compete against as opposed to 5 for those Blackhawks.

    @ThePresident45 It was no fluke Calgary beat Edmonton in 1986,contrary to popular belief.Granted,the Flamesgot a break in that seventh game when Steve Smith put the puck in his own net,but it was up to them to capitalize on that and indeed they did.

    • @oldsrocket8841
      @oldsrocket8841 Před 5 lety

      Yeah right.Lol. Edmonton dominated that division that year. They had 17 losses. Calgary had 31 losses. How can you even say that's not an upset. Had Calgary beat Mtl, Calgary would have had possibly the worst winning percentage of any team to win the cup.

  • @benhvt14
    @benhvt14 Před 11 lety

  • @landrykkb

    @ThePresident45 The Oilers had their way with everybody for 3 years up until that series,it seemed.Actually,wait,Calgary took them to 7 games also just 2 years prior to this.

  • @landrykkb
    @landrykkb Před 12 lety +1

    @industrialsun The Oilers losing to the Flames in 7 games hardly had everything to do with Steve Smith`s faux pas.Granted,it happened to be the deciding goal in that Game 7,bbut the Flames were shuttting down the mighty Oilers all through that series and Mike Vernon stood on his head in that Game 7 after the Oilers fought hard to win.

    Hey Stefan Rasporich. How do you like that Montreal kicked your team's ass in the 1986 finals? Does that upset you? Montreal has 24 Stanley Cups, after they won again in '93. They have a history. The Flames have nothing, just a lousy team in a crappy building in a pathetic city, if you can call it that. When the oil runs dry, what kind of future does Calgary have? Are you going to turn Banff into a coal mine? It wouldn't surprise me.
