- At least 40 people have been killed after a dam burst its banks in a town north of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
Water from the Old Kajiabo Dam washed away houses and cut off a major road.
Search and rescue efforts are underway.
Floods caused by unusually heavy rains have killed dozens of people across East Africa since March.
Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi is at the dam that burst in Nakuru county and Malcolm Webb is east of the capital at another dam at risk of overflowing.

Iam stranded in Nairobi heading to Garissa Town but no roads, people are dying GOD help us 😭
No one has time for the israeli-palestinian conflict because everyone's too busy trying to survive this decade.
From your neighboring country, Uganda, I am saddened by this tragedy and pray for strength for those who lost loved ones and best way forward for the rest
Iam here in Nairobi but I don't have any idea 😢 what brothers and sisters are going through. pole
Must be nice to live in a bubble like you. I actually passed through mai mahiu today and the carnage I saw there was traumatizing and devastating.
Kenyan media has been captured by a rogue government, all they say and show is ruto goin to church,to the toilet ,to the village,to launch already launched projects.Pure nonsense.
Because you are a baby

Thanks to rescue team for rescuing people. 🙏
No rescue team bro, only Red Cross
FACT CHECK: There is no Kijabe Dam and there never has been one.
Reports being circulated by mainstream media about a dam in Kijabe are totally inaccurate and misleading. The tragedy in Old Kijabe Town is not linked to a dam.
A blocked tunnel under the old railway lines created a lake which eventually broke after days of build-up.
So it was a different kind of dam. Unintentional. Not something intentionally put there as a dam. Worth noting, but both things are called dams.
@@PaulStringini Good observation. A dam is intentionally built and observed to minimise such occurrences. AJ should do their work and accurately report.
Even local news reported early morning bwawa
What?😢😢😢😢
@@chepparmaps You have never heard of a natural dam? Just google it.
Lord have mercy on Kenya. This is so sad
Kenya is incompetent when it comes to disaster preparedness.
Corruption 😢 in every corner.
I live in a "well prepared" city but the system was overwelmed for less than this.
Pole sanna 😢
Most African countries are, it's crazy how its 2024 and we still have so much poverty
So what about Dubai? Watch your loose talk
@@kibe3602 they have search and rescue. In Kenya the money is budgeted for emergencies but it's embezzled
My deeply condolences for the families who's lost their loved ones from this dam burst in Nairobi, Kenya. 🙏🇰🇪😢

India is suffering from water scarcity and there is flood at Kenya !!!
Sad, I don't like her reporting . She is overwhelmed, and her thoughts are too disorganised
Prayers
Pole dear Kenyan brothers and sisters.
Praying from Guyana South America 🇬🇾. Strength and God's Devine intervention.
When people are told to move to higher grounds and fail to move, or build houses opposite rivers whether permanent or seasonal, expect such disasters to happen, and that is part of failure of the Kenyan government to enforce rules
Ignorant people
_"I keep seeing the media saying this was a burst dam. It was not. There has never been a dam here. Blocked tunnel under the old railway lines created a lake. It broke after days of build up."_
_"Absolutely, there's no actual dam in Kijabe. The disaster was caused by blocked railway tunnels acting as unintended dams."_
Sounds indirectly like the blocked tunnel created a dam? By definition a dam is just a blockage along a moving body of water.
@@johkimeu Yes but the media is implying that there's a purpose-built dam in Kijabe, and giving it various names: Kijabe Dam, Old Kijabe Dam etc
@@johkimeu Right. What they could say is that this was not an intentional dam. My first thought was "belt and roads" but I guess not.
I think the river drains into the tunnel which directs water into the underground river that drains it's water into lake Naivasha.
Who are you quoting ?
Prayers for these families ❤❤❤
The water seems to have gone halfway up the house 😢
The burst dam was like 100000 times smaller than masinga in terms of capacity, just to crarify
What? What's the status of masinga dam?
Sorry, to see such tragedy! Our brothers and sisters in Kenya are facing relentless hardships.

O no sad news! Condolences to the families. I hope to see some aid organizations help with shelters and make repairs.
I wish they could capture that water into a reservoir for future droughts though.

Is that water going to nile?
Indian ocean
Am in Nairobi ..this place is far from Nairobi ..may God protect them
Kijabe is barely 30 miles from Nairobi dummy. And that’s near if you drive that is.
I live in Kamulu, a town in Nairobi county that doesn't receive much of the rainfall by receives all the sewage and most of the runoff that feeds into Athi river.
My God we are facing it!!! ..... Last night my parent's house was swamped so we spent all day pumping out water and laying down sand bags.
At least I've seen our MCA (Ward Representative) but I still feel the response from our central government has been wanting. This is a national disaster and the president should mobilize every resource and send the MPs back to their constituencies to help their electrolate.
When they are campaigning, no one needs to send them, they bring themselves to the people only when they need them for votes. Such a self-centred lot!
😢God have mercy on Kenya
The Watchman River channel’s newest vid brought me here. I pray not just for the people’s physical and mental well beings, but also for their salvation(s)too.

Incompetence and corruption caused this, not the rain.

Nakuru is the fourth largest city in Kenya, it' s not just a town North of Nairobi.
To locate Nakuru on the global map its bearing must be traced from country's headquarter Nairobi, Kenya.

The town they are talking about is Kijabe not Nakuru, dummy!
Though the area is in Nakuru county, Nakuru city is about 100 kms away.
@@user-tk6lc8zv9c not really, the area is at the border with KIAMBU county. In fact the dam is in Kiambu County but it flooded downhill and caused devastation a few kilometres across the border. The place is barely 30miles from Nairobi.
Which Dam....?
No dam! 🙃. Tell them Charles
Sorry for this exam
This all happening while some of the leaders are abroad and are spending like drunken sailor renovating state houses around the nation. The hospitality spending every month is just bananas. This is all screwed up in kenya.

We blame the president ruto he did not put measures to stop this ,poor leadership
If the government of Kenya stops taking foreign aid money to fix the infrastructure and develop the engineering industry to handle infrastructure, only then will the country become a major power in Africa. All of the so-called graduates of universities in Kenya cannot use their talents to build bridges, buildings and structures able to withstand climate changes.

When water gets blocked up, even by accident. In English, we call that a dam.
@@chepparmaps so why are the people in the hospital who were interviewed saying there was a dam? Wouldn't they know if one exists or not?
The kenyan aljazera re porter is a jok how u call rainy which killed alot of people and damaged everything in the country a dam😂😂
There was something that blocked the water temporarily. Then it broke. That is a dam. At least it is in English.
Stop trying to gaslight. As we all know the English language, everyone has a clear understanding of what a dam is. Usually man made and intentionally made to trap water to create a reservoir. Water getting trapped in an old abandoned colonial railway tunnel is different from a conventional dam. And especially when you start to christen it with new names like Kijabe Dam. I don't see why they couldn't just report that water got stuck due to particulate buildup in an old railway tunnel that eventually collapsed and caused flooding. If you've done your due diligence as a journalist it's not hard to just report that. Furthermore, the journalist even wrongly mentions the direction of the town. That just puts into question if they are good journalists if they can't even mention the correct location and the circumstances that led to the death of several people. But we are not surprised anyway@@PaulStringini
