  • At least 40 people have been killed after a dam burst its banks in a town north of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.
Water from the Old Kajiabo Dam washed away houses and cut off a major road.
Search and rescue efforts are underway.
Floods caused by unusually heavy rains have killed dozens of people across East Africa since March.
Al Jazeera’s Catherine Soi is at the dam that burst in Nakuru county and Malcolm Webb is east of the capital at another dam at risk of overflowing.

FACT CHECK: There is no Kijabe Dam and there never has been one.
Reports being circulated by mainstream media about a dam in Kijabe are totally inaccurate and misleading. The tragedy in Old Kijabe Town is not linked to a dam.
A blocked tunnel under the old railway lines created a lake which eventually broke after days of build-up.

There was something that blocked the water temporarily. Then it broke. That is a dam. At least it is in English.

Stop trying to gaslight. As we all know the English language, everyone has a clear understanding of what a dam is. Usually man made and intentionally made to trap water to create a reservoir. Water getting trapped in an old abandoned colonial railway tunnel is different from a conventional dam. And especially when you start to christen it with new names like Kijabe Dam. I don't see why they couldn't just report that water got stuck due to particulate buildup in an old railway tunnel that eventually collapsed and caused flooding. If you've done your due diligence as a journalist it's not hard to just report that. Furthermore, the journalist even wrongly mentions the direction of the town. That just puts into question if they are good journalists if they can't even mention the correct location and the circumstances that led to the death of several people. But we are not surprised anyway@@PaulStringini
