Vaulting in Rainbow Six Siege was quite the topics on twitter about a month ago, so I decided I'd run some tests and it immediately got way more complicated than I thought it would be. There a definitely issues with this mechanic in the game right now and whatever I did to try to figure it out, I couldn't quite get my head around the underlying issue. I tested vaulting with various pings, I tried vaulting different windows and balconies, I vaulted with different operator speeds and I compared the first person to a third person's view and finally all of the puzzle pieces started falling into place! I'd say it has something to do with the physics calculations intermittently spamming updates... which would be why in some cases, turning after falling keeps delay and then after a little bit it suddenly snaps into place

Also worth mentioning at the 13:39 vault test, the left Gridlock starts at 193 hp and goes down to 189 (-4 hp) and the right Gridlock starts at 200 hp and goes down to 193 (-7). The Gridlock that took more damage is the one that floated in front of the window for a few extra frames, so the amount of damage you take is based on your falling time and not falling height.
This means that the damage you take when vaulting out of a window is also pretty random. Awesome

I feel like the "run-out timer" problem is present in the game even without vaulting. Some times the timer kicks in immediately, some times it takes a bit longer. Might just be me, but I think that's a problem in and of itself. The vaulting problem may make this one worse, but I'm almost sure this one is a problem by itself.
What's run timer?

Basically, it's 2 seconds (your screen turns orange-like and the voice-line like "your position will be compromised")
I feel like this timer should be gone. Meaning that when you run out, you immediately get detected. If you account the ping and the run-out timer problem, you still get some time before the alert actually come out in the other player screen. Meaning you still have the advantage.
I think the outside detector is tied to the round clock, so it checks every second. So if you run out just after the checker cycles, it could be almost a good second before it detects you
9:33 it doesn't matter the weight of the operator, everything "should" fall at the same speed because I highly doubt r6 has air resistance. 😁
There also doesn't seem to be acceleration. Gravity in pretty much all video games is completely unrealistic.

The TSM clip has more to do with shotguns being broken. There are so many times I lay full, meaty shots into players and they take no damage if I’m killed within a short time of firing. Doesn’t even have to be a 1 on 1. I shoot guy in back, another guy shoots me in back. First guy takes no damage.
Hit registration on shotguns in most games are terrible.
That happens to me a lot but often the opposite happens too. Where a shot that doesn't really hit just kills cause it feels like it.

@@haz1125_ I've did some tests in custom matches, where full on body shots, with the crosshair fully on the person's body, does 0 or close to 0 damage, it's even worse if you are moving as you shoot, if you played the grand larceny event you will know what im talking about.

seriously i use to run around killing people with montee and like a year ago they changed something with who knows what and ever since u can get meleed thru the montee shield
I cant count how many times I been shot through my shield. Its mainly shotguns I have issues against.... Dont know if it was fixed but whenever Id flash with Blitz the other player would shoot out of desperation or cause he panicked and it goes straight through the shield. Its almost like Blitz has a second or 2 of vulnerability after flashing even though your shield is facing the enemy perfectly and even in the kill cam you'll see the pellets hit your shield but you die anyways. Cause of this I stopped playing shield ops entirely.

When the player model finishes the vaulting animation and begins straightening out, sometimes the player model straightens out while falling, sometimes they float a bit just like what you've shown in the video, right?
I think that the player model only does the floating behavior if you are too close to the window, however if you are too far from the window the game has to accelerate you harder in order to sync you up with the vaulting animation, you know how if you're too close to a window, instead of only getting the vault option you will also get a rappel option? if you vault when that option is available, you cause a 150ms float, if you are standing far enough from the window when you vault such that you don't see the rappel option in the first place, you might be disadvantaged because your player model won't float.
Just a theory, I'm trying to guess how the game engine renders these mechanics, this entire thing could just be a complexity with windows and their "rappel instead" option ruining the sync for when you vault anyways instead of rappelling
By the way, if the distance between the player and the window is the cause of the inconsistency, I think I know what update may have introduced this bug, remember the old movement mechanics? the ones where you felt like you carried a lot of momentum wherever you go? the old mechanics siege 1.0 was introduced with. When they added the new mechanics, could that have messed something up with vaulting?
if you guys don't remember what patch I'm talking about, remember when mira was able to place windows at ANKLE height? whatever patch they rolled out to patch this mira glitch could be responsible for all of this tbh
Also, if what I said doesn't turn out to be the case, I noticed something missing from your video, and it's the distance the player is standing from the window when they press "vault", could it be..?
This is a slim possibility, as on the backend it probably just boilds down to a local "far enough away from window" check, which nbever takes 150ms. It also doesn't explain why on Bank the vault over the ledge (i.e. no window) is so inconsitent.

The biggest thing with rainouts is you have to be confident, if you doubt yourself and panic your gonna get killed.

the thing is my timer always seems to start earlier than everyone elses which is what rogue 9 has proven

Rappelling is broken as well
When an attacker rappells into the map their model appears to bounce up very high for a split second from a defender POV, but from the attacking POV the bounce is minimal

@@Rogue9 did you test the yellow stairs vault with the same operators and weapons? I dont think you can say that case was desync from a third view perspective, as the problem was the first view clearly hitting two shotgun shots, with a more than one second interval, even with hit sound cues. If you dont use the same variables in testing, you wont get the same results. Put an ash rushing up the stairs while you vault shoot her with a shotgun and tells us what happens...

Ive had this happen before in game where I was clearly hitting all my shots (blood splatter and everything) and none of them seemingly did any damage, only to have the person below turn and either instakill or down me almost it seemed like an aimbot or that the desync was catching up in their favor so to speak. I just chalked it up to server packet loss or bad ping or whatever. I mean, at some point you just start to accept all the fucked up shit that happens in this game because its a never ending stream of nonsense from one day to the next and one patch to the next. One thing that i noticed from the twitter video. There is a "bullet hit to the body" sound in the replay. That sound should be active IF the bullet hit a body right? In the second video you can hear that the shotgun pellet actually hit her in the replay (judging from the sound). I can confirm this since the hit sound only occurred once not multiple. Same as the first video, you'll hear multiple bullet hit to the body sound on buck but the damage is minimal. So somehow the sound is active meaning the bullet did hit but there is no or minimal damage? Now this can be a de-sync ping or replay glitch but that is what i noticed.
It my be that opponents health bar is bugged sometimes, I mean that ash may has actually taken damage but it doesnt show it, it happened to me many times when I am 100% sure I hit someone and when he kills me he is full health, so I hope its a kill cam bug and not a hit registering bug

A simple solution: Someone makes a game that is a Rainbow 6 Siege killer.
They made one for mobile, then people went with torches and pitchforks against it, calling it a "blatant copycat" and Ubisoft went after it, too, forcing it to close down.

Immense thank you for your hard work! The game we all love is full of issues unfortunately. It is nice to know a person with expertise that the developers would listen to is taking care of it one bug at a time. I still think the biggest issue r6s has (apart from the cheating problem) is the inconsistent sound. Hope this problem will too be brought to light in such constructive manner some day...
By the way the thing with character models starting to fall after vaulting at different times seems to also have connection to the bug when sometimes rappelling into windows first lands you on some invisible platform for a split-second and only then on the floor.
This game is like an amazing foundation for a house but whenever we ask for them to add the windows or roof they change the type of wood in the walls.
Actually Siege runs on the engine of the most glitched out Assassin's Creed game. It looks awesome on the blueprint but everything built falls apart because of the poor foundation.

They built this game super cheep because they weren't sure how well it would go so they took the classic Ubisoft approach of "how much to make it work but how little to not make it a risky investment." turns out the game is well liked but the foundation was made of sticky tack and pop sickle sticks and it cant handle the years of updates they try to paste on.

I did tests on that myslef and tried to contact R9 about the clips but he sadly hasn´t responded.
I know how to replicate the issue, I know what causes it (I obviously don´t want to share it for people to abuse it here).
I was thinking about sending the clips to Ubi so they may be able to fix that issue. It has been in the game for AT LEAST TWO SEASONS now!

Yeah, I stopped playing siege when I hit twitch in the back at point blank range twice with a shotgun and it only did 25 damage and she just knifed me
Yes I do have some issues. Sometimes the caracter model of a jumping or falling player bellyflops on the ground while in first person and the killcam it stays standing / crouching. resulting in me missing the shots.

Meybe this is also the reason of when someone is rappeling in the model of the one rappeling sometimes jumps or snaps on the air for a while then giving you a disadvantage
I'd be interested in seeing if this occurs with "indoor vaulting" or dropping through hatches.

I’ve had several of these problems when doing window jump outs and no damage is taken off them. Glad this is being pointed out
I’ve had a weird glitch when trying to go down a hatch, it’ll make me fall down and then repeat the falling animation in the same spot and won’t let me move, I have proof that I can post in my channel if you guys want to see it. The weird part is that it’s only showing it up to me, anyone that spectated doesn’t see the glitch happen.

Client-server desync. The server refuses to let you drop in because it didn't register you had already broken the hatch and it's gone on your client screen.
It used to happen to me a lot on Para Bellum. Breaking walls with the ACS-12 and Impact Nades just to rubberband back when trying to go through the hole the server did not register I opened on the wall.
like the above reply, happens a lot with walls and stuff too, ask a teammate to break the hatch if you're getting that issue/destroy the wall more

Rouge's work over the years has to be a Dev's dream. Easy to digest and well catalogued tests would be a godsend.
The engine struggles with collision. Test people running through doors and tight places. You will get invincibility frames because the engine is still calculating how you went through the tight space to the server then the server to the client. Test it.

I think this can be caused by Dynamic Vault System (let's call it like that). Vaults in Siege aren't static because you can destroy walls and you need to have the way of determining where you can vault. And maybe the different angle of approach to the window (or fast turning while vaulting) is what causes different experience and the desync between server and client.
Different angle of approach or turning => different determination of a vault (both server and client) => different determination of a "falling" state => different fall time and experience

Been having this issue for years. Sometimes there's even visible blood sprayed all over the wall but the run out still having full health
The grand larceny mode showed this problem even further. So many times I've been right up to someone and pumped them full of bullets only for them to be completely unscathed
Blood is not actually a hit indicator. It's a client side effect. I'm not saying it didn't happen but blood spray is not an actual hit register.
@@AD-df5tm the blood splatter is supposed to indicate a hit. Even if it's clientside, a blood spatter should mean that you hit someone, logically

i had one game where I blast frost with 6 shots from blackbeards ar and then I blast her with 6 deagle shots not dead in fact only took half damage she shoots me once with super 90 dead I didnt even vault i came in through a hatch and I play on xbox so I dont think it was a hacker and also I had 34 ms when this happened and the frost had 50

@@Rogue9 Ibam just goint to highjack this and point you towards something. If a player drops of of a surface the time spent in midair is always inconsistent. If you are lucky, you can basicly walk on air for about 3 frames, sometimes you can't propperly leave the surface before being stopped. If you want i could supply you with clips to show what i mean.
This very similar thing happened me on Bank. I jumped out the (connector I think it's called, that little hall with 4 windows on top floor) as Castle and hit every shot but only done one 1 bullet of damage which I think I done after I landed. It genuinely could have been what lost us the game it was a 4-4 and I had the call that it was only one but the game completely cost the kill and my life
With all work into analyzing footage that are literally 1 second a movie must be an eternity

I don’t think you should be able to aim while vaulting through a window. I’ve been shot by people vaulting in through a window they aim and get a head shot. Vaulting through a window should put you in a disadvantage
I agree, that coupled with this vaulting inconsistency is what makes 3 speed runouts so deadly I think
I would second that
falling should deactivate aiming and diable it for the duration of falling. Easy and simple, makes sense gameplay-wise, and is even realistic.

You use one hand to vault, thus lowering your accuracy cus you're no longer holding the front part of the gun. I'm surprised there's not increased recoil as well

Nice test and solid analysis. Great job as always, one thing I do wonder though: I might've missed it but the last test might've benefitted from an additional test: If vaulting somehow affects the shotgun pallet spread or not. Maybe food for thought for a separate video?
