Hi Friends! thanks for watching!
Just wanted to keep those informed as to why I don't require a mask.
I know most of you already know this information just wanted to share it incase anyone was confused.
I live in Perth, Australia and we have virtually 0 community cases of covid. People who have covid go to isolation in hotels.
We had one case in January and ONE person shut down the entire city for a week. 6000 people were tested and NO ONE contracted it, because of the measures we have. Because we have really strict rules and have been able to keep on top of everything we do not require masks as covid is not active in our community at all.
Social distancing is 100X more important than wearing a mask. You are lucky living in a country that got this madness under control.
And here us Americans are still having to wear masks. Its like if all the selfish assholes listened and followed guidelines we would be in the clear but no us Americans can be so egocentric
@@devonmunn5728 agreed I'm from Massachusetts 📼
I wish people here in Mexico would take it as seriously as your country. :(
@@Strobenz Damn people down there are stubborn as fuck too? Shit
I’m not gonna lie, I gotta little teary eyed seeing you walk through the theater. I didn’t realize how much I missed the actual movie experience.
I only ever went to see like 1 movie a year in the theater, if that.. Sometimes I didn't even see one.
So I don't miss it much... But I would like to go again!
I miss it, too. Vaccines are now available in my area. Maybe we'll be able to go to the theater in a month or two. Fingers crossed. 🤞🤞🤞🤞
The Virgin Mary in this film reminded me of the Teletubbies's Sun baby 😂😂😂
Wow that sounds bad
When that scene first popped out I legit started laughing in the theater because I thought the same thing 🤣
EXACTLY WHAT I THOUGHT!!! 😂😂😂
Lmao my brother said the same thing
Omg yes!! I said the same thing 😂😂 the teletubbies sun baby of mediocre horror.
The SHADE:
"I saw it in the cinema, but it wasn't cinematic at all."
"It felt like a lifetime movie" LMAO
Her face when she gets back in the car says it all lol.
Totally! That look had me literally laughing out loud. :)
I kept thinking of Saint Maud while watching this, I was hoping for some darkness and really psychological shit, but instead I got an okay horror movie. The opening scene was promising to me, but I do agree with you how it gives away too much too fast (not just that scene, but the whole movie). The slight kinda half assed twist towards the end was alright, but wasn’t enough to make up for this. It would be a good one to watch with friends and drinks and make fun of it the whole time😅😂 I also agree there was wayyyy too much CGI in this. Really took away from the story.
I felt the same way about Saint Maud; yikes I could not WAIT to leave the cinema when I went to see it.
"I feel bad for everyone involved". That basically tells me everything I need to know 😂
WHAT THE HECKKK!!!!!!!! I swear to literal god that right when I was reading this comment while the CZcams video was playing, she’s said that same exact line at the same time I was reading it 🤯🤯
Unholy is in the Supernatural universe confirmed. He didn't react because he's really a Winchester and has seen all this kinds of things before. 🙃😂
😂😂
The way they depicted the spirit of Mary made me audibly laugh in the theater! Wtf was that!? 😂😂😂
Totally agree! Me too!
Jeffrey dean morgan needs to pick better roles. That here’s Negan episode shows just how damn good of an actor he is.
All the bad parts you talked about in this film were my favorite parts 😅😂. I'm so down for cheesy horror films and this one is for sure that. Sorry you didn't like it, but I'm glad you saw it so we all could see this rant 😁
It's not cheesy on purpose though, that's the bad thing.
@@theguywhoisaustralian1465 Eh, not for me. Doesnt matter if its on purpose or not. I still enjoyed 😁
@@AnthonyTurner you are easily amused haha
@@ReaperPLUR i guess you can say that haha. I just grew watching late 90s and early 00s tv shows like Buffy, Xena and Supernatural. Which are all cheesy as hell. So i tend to favor trash like that 😁
@@AnthonyTurner those are all good shows haha, I like trashy or so bad they good movies too, but this was so all over the place I couldn't tell it was serious or trying to be bad
Natalie and Garry's reaction when the Itaian priest burns alive : Oh, well anyways..
went to look at the trailer out of curiosity and one of the comments was 'the statue and book fandom goin wild' and i never snorted so hard-
I feel like they put this one in theaters because they are so desperate to put something out. Even though they have plenty just sitting there waiting to be released. Like I don’t know... Antlers. Lol
I miss movie theaters so much! I'm vaccinated, but none of my other friends/family are. I'm waiting for them to get vaccinated before I start going again because we enjoy spending time with eachother at the theaters
Feel like I could tell all of this from the trailer tbh 😂 but I have this masochistic love for 90’s 00’s mid-budget horror movies, like The Reaping, Gothika, The Rite and The Unborn, where they’re definitely not good, but they’re such a bland, easy watch that I keep watching them! I can see this being added to that list 😂 another awesome video, thanks!
I saw this movie last week, and the entire time I was laughing, I just couldn't LMAO btw love your videos much love from NYC!
Why doesn’t JDM pick better roles!? He’s a good actor! I’ll be giving this one a miss! Thanks Emma!
He might not have other options
He's a vg actor and the only reason to still watch TWD but he's not a movie star yet. Hopefully he'll get some better roles than this apparent stinker.
MCU would be a good place for him since he has good talent and humour. He doesn't fit these low budget horror movies. I could imagine him playing Kraven the hunter for spiderman.
When the trailer came out on Facebook I commented on it saying "Oh look. Another one"
I was considering seeing this movie and your review makes me want to see it more! At least now I know what I’m getting into and can enjoy it as a shit movie.
Thanks for doing the Candy Bar Break! So nostalgic (even though it’s only been a year)
That's sad because I was looking forward in watching this one this weekend. Thanks for the warming Emma!
You have to see it it was so good
@@andreavalencia4694 I agree, I really liked it.
Emma be like: "Even Faith can't save this mess lol"
Thanks very much for the review, Emma. I guess I will check this film out eventually on DVD rental. The story sounded good from the trailer, but how many times have we been burned by a good premise?
On a separate note, I am finally going to a movie theater after 13-and-a-half months. Going to see "Godzilla Vs. Kong" for a second time (first time on streaming) and all the big screen monster mayhem that goes with it.😉
This movie was so...there. It's undeniably filmed, with actors reading lines. As a horror films, it certainly exists among the entirety of the horror genre.
But holy crap, this was so underwhelming. I watched it on my computer, and the only time I was even remotely scared was when they had a SUPER LOUD JUMP SCARE NOISE while I was doing something else and not paying attention.
I didn't know that it was based on a James Herbert film, and I can't believe anyone important actually read the book. Herbert's writing is pulpy, but also incredibly visceral. This was like Herbert on a near-overdose of valium.
I'm in England and the cinemas are still closed. I miss it so much 😭
The cinema you go to looks lovely!
@Wee Dee I think there are still gems that come out today. Yes, there's awful stuff, but I don't think that defines the whole of modern cinema. I've been watching a lot of films from home, but I miss that cinema experience so much - there's something about it that you just can't capture at home.
@Wee Deeoff the top of my head -
Saint Maud.
Parasite.
His House.
Joker.
The Invisible Man
Midsommar
1917
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
Just Mercy
Us
I've also heard great things about -
Soul
Promising Young Woman
Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
The Lighthouse
And these are ONLY a few of the big, popular films with studio backing, and not the multitude of independent films that are being made.
@Wee Dee well that just means we have different tastes in films, which is absolutely fine. I'm very open minded about film myself, and watch a huge amount from the 20's right up to present day.
As I said, the films we both mentioned are big budget films and are well known. We haven't even touched on the small budget independent film industry.
I honestly love your content so much. I have watched loads of movies from ur recommendations and have loved them!! I watched annihilation today and it’s sooo beautiful just like you said :))))
Another great video my dear! You're one of my favorite horror reviewers on youtube, even turned my mom into one of your biggest fans, rarely disagree with your opinions. Still curious to watch this one, if only for the main actresses performance, but if even she isn't enough to save it I might just wait to rent it when it's 99c. Though a lifetime-esque horror show sounds ridiculously entertaining.
Watching you sit in a car at night in what looks like a empty parking lot gives me so much anxiety
Thanks for your informed review. I was intrigued by the trailer for "The Unholy" and watched it all the way to the end, only to see that it was going to be released "only in theatres" in Canada over the Easter 2021 weekend. Most of our theatres have been closed for months. I'm curious to know how many people actually saw it here. I was interested to learn that what we call cotton candy is called fairy floss in Australia.
I remember seeing the trailer for this one and thinking to myself, "how do you make it so that your trailer has really bad pacing?"
I don't think I've ever thought that about a trailer before
Emma I just came here to thank you for your content! Really completes my week when you upload. I hope you have a great weekend xx
Thanks for watching! It meant a lot to me
Hey Emma, I've been watching your vids since last year. How did I get to you? I watched 'Maus' and as I started to look for reviews about the ending since I wasn't quite sure about how I was interpreting it so I watched one of your vids. I've been following your vlog since that day. (And I've just found out we live in the same city xD!)
About The unholy: I knew this movie was going to be all over the place! The trailer was just too promissing. Also I think I heard something like "the most terrorific movie ever made". That's never true. But as you said in one of your last videos, I'm just happy that there are new horror movies being released or on the way. So, I'll try to watch it soon.
Thanks for your reviews!
Thanks for taking one for the team. I hate it when horrors relies heavily on jumpscares.
Yeah, I was watching this preview while at the movies for "Nobody" (which is cool and hilarious in an action-movie sort of way). This looked dubious.
The theaters have been great fun during lockdown. I've probably watched a dozen shows at discount. I saw Akira, Airplane, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, Psycho . . . all kinds of things I desperately wanted to catch on the big screen. (I wish they'd show Fight Club.)
I just saw it today, it was SO BAD, i legit fell asleep for 10 whole minutes. I only got scared when i was jumped awake ahahah
Thank you for this! Been torn if I should see this ot not! You should make a review on "in the earth". Saw it and dont know what to think! Love your videos!!!!! ❤
Sees “rant” in thumbnail
*Throws popcorn in microwave* 😂😂
Great vid Emma! So close to 80k!
😂😂😂
You guys have the best theaters in Australia
Is the music that plays during the theatre montage on Spotify by chance?
They are free songs on CZcams library
Imagine the conversation between Ted and Sam.
Sam: Really?!
Ted: 🤷🏻♀️
I wonder if he meant it to be satire. I mean Ted is pretty eccentric.
Dam.. had high hopes for this. Such a good premise
I saw the trailer for this movie and laughed so hard. People were freaking out about it in the comments. They show you everything in the trailer, its sad.
Check out "The Dark and The Wicked" if you haven't yet. Lots of jump scares but a brutal movie.
Plus Christian themed horror has been done to oblivion and back again. Like The Vigil came out a while back which is about a Jewish ritual and while i haven't seen it it sounds refreshing and i would love to see other horror stories that are religious themed but not Christianity cause it's become the go to for religious horror
Really appreciate the cinematography of the video, how’ve I not noticed this before ✨
Oh thank you haha it’s just a point and shoot camera. I would bring my big one but it’s pretty obvious when I’m in the cinema with it 😂
Thank you for reviewing this movie, I went to go watch it alone at a 10:45pm showing on a Monday and it was surprisingly filled up to the max that the theater is allowed to have. The movie itself though I already knew that it wasn't going to be the best movie but I had hope for it. It does have the potential to be a good movie but I think it was ruined by the trailer because all the good parts were in the trailer and the monster was just shown right off the bat so it left nothing to the imagination. If you're into cheesy jumpscare horror movies though this is for you.
Thank you for the warning. I’ll wait for it to stream free somewhere.
My parents went to see this last night and ah... they did not like it at all. My Dad actually told me it was one of the worst movies he'd seen in a while. Said he thought it made The Nun look like a classic. After this review I'm thinking I won't check this one out.
Completely agree with the lifetime movie feel! And not being immersed in it. Agree with everything you said lol So unrealistic reactions and characters nothing to make you feel anything at all really. Not even scared. Just nothing lol The message is good , could have been an ok movie but they failed. I feel a lot of movies lately don't make likeable realistic characters and it makes an otherwise good movie, just terrible. Take care! ✌️🤗
Well, I was anticipating this film as I relatively miss those conjuring-esque cheap thrill films. Sucks to hear that this didn't live up to that. Guess I'll rewatch Saint Maud, Hereditary, and Blackcoats Daughter again :/
Thanks for your review! I’m so torn now to see it or not and a big fan of religious movies! We are lucky here in Australia to go back to the cinemas.
love your cruising tune for this vid!
Thanks C L
Damn lol. I was looking forward to this as a fan of religious-themed horror. I really liked seeing how different but the same treats are Down Under.
When I saw a commercial for this film as something you should see on Good Friday, I knew it would be bad!
I loved the mini theater tour with all the fun snacks 😁
I absolutely love your reviews! I think you are the best horror film reviewer on here! so so engaging, thank you for such a great channel
Thank you Tony
I’m sad 😢 I heard Sam rami and my ears perked up and then what followed after was every horror fans nightmare, another movie to stain our genre 😂 hey great review, I’m from Canada 🇨🇦 seeing all those different treats at your cinema has me jelly, keep up good work 🤘
Thank you for the review. I will definitely watch this one from home!
I missed Gromit so i had to rewind and watch it again 😂
ooft im going to see it on tuesday, honestly just excited to eat movie popcorn again aha. you look lovely by the way!!
Just watched the movie. For some reason, when you got into the car I was half expecting a jump scare from behind your seat...
Nooooo, I was sooo looking forward to this one 😭😭
Sameee
Lmao Emma
“I would not recommend seeing this in a cinema- it almost makes it worse!”
HA!
Even replacing Shrine with the title The Unholy, you already know the 'miracles' & events won't be anything 'godly'.
A shame as JH's original book is one of my faves & I have read it several times.
I take it that the book is much better than the movie?
@@asimghaffar8148I can't really compare it to this film adaption as I haven't watched it (yet) but all the reviews seem to be pretty negative, which is a shame as I had really high hopes for this when it was first announced. The book is a great read though.
Was that choc fudge dip?!
My take away from the film is: Teletubbies, get a Zippo for holy fire and televangelist. Movie felt like they had 50 bucks in pocket to finish second half of them film.
Hope Grommet is healing well. The trailer looked cheesy...I'm glad to hear they were up front about the quality. Thanks for sitting though this for us.
Really entertaining video as always. I know I'll end up checking this out purely because Geoffrey Dean Morgan is in it, but I haven't heard positive reviews from anywhere.
😉😉Thank you for doing this video on The Unholy, I just saw it and I love this movie 👍👍👍I have enjoyed your insight on this film
I read the book this was based on when I was young, back in the 80's. I remember liking it. I suspect the movie will be far removed from the original ideas...
I'm about 2/3 of the way through reading it right now and I'm yet to get a 'glimpse' of the monster, only a bunch of people feeling that something is wrong, a lot of talk, and maybe a couple of cracks showing. I think the one other difference I'm getting from her review is that the MC worked for a country newspaper, not a tabloid dealing with psychics and stuff. It's mostly about cynicism and the church.
I think I'll wait til it's in Netflix.
Edit: I just watched the trailer and it doesn't look the same except they both use the same trope. Fir starters, the girl in the book is 11 and barely speaks a word.
This movie was pretty bad. My buddy and I recently saw it in the theater on opening day. I FELL ASLEEP multiple times. Granted, it was after we got out from work but still. The jump scares were so ridiculously loud and over the top that they would wake me up periodically throughout the movie. 😅
Is that Event Cinemas in Innaloo?
Yep
@@spookyastronauts I didn't even realise you were from Perth and I haven't been to Innaloo for ages, so mind-blown!
I am usually not someone who judges a book by it's cover or in this case, a movie by it's trailer, but it was obvious that this movie would be a cheesy PG-13 mess. But i enjoy these kind of movies and jump scares mostly do work for me, so i will still watch. :D
Rock them shoulders, girl! Thanks for viewing these for us, always appreciated.
Was excited for this...hopefully I like it
Hi Emma, I Just watched The Unholy at home on STARZ late nite/Early a.m. Feb 11 2022, & I rewatched your review after. Most times I agree with your reviews of movies, & often like films that you liked, but in this case I really liked The Unholy, maybe in part cus I saw it at home & did not notice that Gerry & the gal doctor Under reacted to the Evil Mary entity, as you did; also I've not seen many religious horror movies, so I Don't feel this was "the same story" as some reviews I read on online said. I really like Jeffrey Dean Morgan & I felt he & Cricket ? (forgot her last name) & the actor playing the town Priest, & who played the Monsignor, & the female Dr, & Cary Elwes did a pretty good job. So don't judge me, as I found this movie Entertaining & despite the Evil Mary entity was revealed up front I still found her very Scary looking & tho there was a lot of CGI used, a few Close scenes of her in the mask was an actual actress, so there may've been a few practical effects. And I felt the last act was exciting & very Tense, and I'm Happy that Gerry & the Dr lady got thru to Alice so that Evil Mary revealed herself to the congregants who Fled, & that Alice's goodness Screamed NO to the Evil Mary & saved Gerry's life, and it took away Evil Mary's power & sent her away (maybe to Hell I hope), & that his prayer to G-d brought Alice BK Alive. So I'm Glad for it's fairly Happy ending.😊
Gracias por los subtitulos
The problem with today's movies are thoses digital cameras that are being filmed on. All these recent digital movies look like Soap operas and the magic of horror is gone. Nothing will replace a celluloid film...
another great video, thanks emma
Everything’s opening up here now, so the theater is finally an option, prbly won’t see this one tho
Thank you 😊
The movie was building up to something so cool but fumbled it. I wish the ending was some “Cary” shit and Alice lost to Mary. I just hate when horror movies have a happy ending idk. That intro scene was amazing tho I wish the rest of the movie was like that
Why your steering wheel on the wrong side of your car? 🤔
I liked the message, basically telling us how they cover the evil with good.
I would watch anything that Jeffery Dean Morgan participates in. But even saying that, I had a hard time getting through this movie.
I would say it's like a 6, no real atmosphere or tension, but some good acting and the storys quite interesting in parts it's not the worst I've seen but not the best either. Definetly wouldn't appeal to the horror fans who like blood and gore and brutal stuff
"ALL HAIL AND BE THANKFUL TO SONY PICTURES"
10/10 a normal review that a real person would write
Hahaha
Thanks for so many great videos! Have you watched any of "The Blackwell Ghost " movies? I think they are great and I would love to hear your take on them:-)
Heyy!!!
Heyy!!
Have you seen The Seventh Day? Staring Guy Pearce and Vadhir Derbez?
Yes! Not a fan 🥲
Well that saves me time & money 🤣 happy to wait till can watch for free.
I saw this film and I'm not going to lie I didn't think it was so bad I don't think the effects of what they were trying to do for the whole entire Virgin Mary thing wasn't too bad either but I do agree that I feel like this film was a little too cartoony for my tastes and I found it weird that my wife liked it but I dance because of how the idea of the film is like beastly made in a sense like how it's surrounded by all this different lower and all that but I kind of told her I think just gave away so much and it's too in-your-face and I don't like that when it comes to a horror film because it just ruins the idea being scared in my opinion and I do agree the first thing they should have done is not revealed and all what was going on until it needed to be done on top of that I also agree that Jimmy Dean Morgan's character's backstory should have been the main focus and it should have shown why he had to report stories to do with the Paranormal like there's so many directions you can go with this film on why it needs to be fixed
Thanks for the feedback on this one Emma, will put it on the back burner for now. Stay spooky
You too Chris!
I usually don't watch trailers but I accidentally stumbled across one for this movie. Immediately knew this one was bad from it, just so generic looking, jump scares literally in the trailer. All around cheese fest and not in a good way
I saw this with my friend. We both hated the ending. We were hoping for a Carrie type of ending, like just everyone dieing and a shocking unhappy ending. This is a movie for people who don't usually watch horror.
I don’t understand how Sam Raimi was involved in this and there possibly wasn’t a single practical effect used, the actors were clearly on green screens in the majority of scenes too. So bad!
I went to see this movie in the theater last Sunday and fell asleep haha
Oh, that reaction reminds of the wrong turn one xd
"The Unholy" was ok for a PG-13 made for TV movie. It was produced by Sam Raimi, so that is something.
Did anyone notice the extra walk into the tent with the tree and he had a face mask on? You can tell it was filmed in the pandemic.
