As a designer of transformative gene editing systems, I can say that if given enough research funding and some time (but not as long as you might assume), we can actually do better than Arrkay says. For every potential problem, there are potential solutions.

It's funny that you mentioned this is easier to do than figuring out anti aging tech when just a few days ago it came out that they were able to make mice younger. They showed off two mice that were the same age but one was old, gray and weak while the other looked young, healthy and had really thick black fur. They say it's not long until this is readily available for humans. The organs of the younger looking mouse were also much healthier too and in theory if your organs stay healthier then you should live longer in theory

As long as it doesn't affect the reproductive cells, in general it should be considered.... ethical enough. though like a person going through gender transition one would likely have to go through quite a bit of expensive therapy beforehand to make sure it is the right decision for them. Even so I imagine it would be hard to find professionals willing to perform the operations at first even if it was found to be 100% harmless physically. People just have hang-ups about things like body modification, even relatively minor ones. And we all know someone would try to look like a demon just to piss off the religious types. So you could expect lots of protests. There is also the social implications, many people already assume that furries are degenerates and perverts, making it obvious at a glance would make living a relatively normal life difficult until, and if, it became mainstream enough. Body purists would become an issue, Harassment would be a given.
I do imagine though that given enough time communities would likely develop, people do tend to cluster around like people and this would be no different. So neighborhoods of all transitioned people would be likely after just a few years. And then the ethics of if there are sizable enough communities that make up what amounts to a different racial group. Would it then be more ethical to let them genetically modify their sex cells so that their children look more like their community. At which point you start imprinting a new breeding population of modified people that brings up it's own host of issues.
Them we get into practical application. I'm sure the military would love to have a secret force of modified soldiers with any number of traits that are beneficial. Color changing skin, night vision, environment specific changes, enhanced senses. Could have a whole spec ops team that is specifically modified to be the best at their jobs. Very hush hush of course.
Would a post species transition person still be considered human legally? Like we give people of every race, skin color, sexuality, religious and economic background right. But those don't necessarily apply to people who aren't seen as human anymore.
The fashion industry would probably both love and hate it. Unique market to exploit at a higher profit margins for specially made cloths, of a population that would already be seen as wealthy enough to do body transformations. Infrastructure would likely have to change when there are enough people of vastly different body shapes. It really has quite a range of implications that one would have to sort through to figure out the logistics on it's net effect on society.

An interesting notion to consider is that of epigenetics: what if some of the mechanisms for changing your physiological development, are already present within human DNA, and just need the right additional support/stimulus to trigger (fur growth, etc)? If we're already genetically so similar to other creatures, maybe some of the groundwork's already been laid by evolution, for shapeshifting? It could explain some of the accounts of feral children looking a lot like wildlife when encountered. It makes more sense that our genome is flexible enough to make a few beneficial phenotypical changes to our bodies when we're under pressure to survive, than that our genomes' expressions are just locked rigidly in place like documents on a hard drive, anyway.
I mean, if we have latent epigenetic triggers for an assortment of diseases, it stands to reason that, perhaps there's also some for developing beneficial traits, as well, that we can discover and adapt to our own purposes?
Definitely the sort of topic I enjoy exploring.

I wouldn't want to be an early adopter of it due to not being sure how the proven the tech would be and finally, The social-political climate is so brutal. If people can't accept HUMANS for the pigment of their skin or culture and transitioning to the gender they identify with, can you imagine how some people would react to someone transitioning into an anthro? On the last claim, that a furry transformative therapy could be a stepping stone to immortality, in theory, especially if you begin when still relatively young, one way to do that now would be to use a CRISPR modification to extend your cells' telomeres, doing nothing else. This would prevent premature cellular damage from duplication errors. It might not reverse aging perse, but it would stave off one form of aging, and would at the very least afford you enhanced longevity.

    • @wiczus6102
      @wiczus6102 Před rokem +2

Extending your telomeres is not difficult. You can just upregulate telomerase activity. However extending telomeres (just like any in vivo crispr use) is likely to cause off-site mutations. A mutation in NOX gene + a little bit of immune system inactivity and you would die from metastasizing cancer. Using any enzyme that cuts or extends DNA in any way is a sure way to die.
What should be done instead is: putting healthy cells that were modified in the lab into the body and then killing the cells that aren't modified with immunotherapy. You could for instance put a cell with 5 copies tumor suppresor genes, which would make you practically immune to cancer. Other aging processes could be combated similarily.

Furries are not realistically viable. In real life, Physics and the Ecosystem break us down into what would essentially be disabled people.
Fur would make it harder to exist anywhere warm, and the ability to sweat would become quite the obstacle. One way to avoid that is simply to revert back to panting, but that comes with it's own problems.
Tails are... difficult. In normal animals, the tail acts as tool for balancing. There's a reason why most bipedal animals don't have it anymore. All the bipedal animals that *do* have tails also come with horizontal bodies, essentially just being quadrupedal again, except they can use their "hands" for stuff that isn't walking.
Digitigrade legs are just. No. You'd be so tired. Digitigrade legs were made by Evolution to be ideally for quadrupedal creatures. A bipedal creature with digitigrade legs would be like if you tiptoed everywhere.
Also, it would uh make even more people into antifurs, and since it was just a conflict of interest before, I think we can expect more terrorism and discrimination if we extended it to our physical bodies.
It would be cool as heck if we can find a way to make any of this work, though.

One problem with modifying your anatomy (muzzle, tail, ears) is that once you're done growing, those things don't generate anymore. For example, we have genes for arms and legs. But once you lose those, you don't get em' back. That's basically the issue for most of your organs (liver has limited regenerative capabilities). You might have the genes to turn into a furry, but you probably wouldn't feel any effects other than hormonal changes due to different proteins getting expressed. One way we might be able to get around needing to inject dna into a developing fetus to get more significant morphological changes is possibly looking at how lizards, flatworms, and other organisms regrow parts of themselves. If you could trick your body into thinking there is a missing part it needs to regenerate, there's hypothetically no limit to what we could add to our body.
Of course, we're entirely assuming we have enough of a grasp of DNA to do stuff like that. Admittedly, AIs might help in this regard. But, figuring out how DNA works is ridiculously complex and hard. For example, we've barely scratched the surface of the genetic code of model organisms like drosophila and the mustard plant (used in plant biology), despite them being the absolute major focus for large portions of scientific genetic studies. And these are relatively simple and easy-to-manipulate organisms. Scale that up to something as complex as a fox or us... Well, we need a different way to approach genotype-phenotype matching that's a lot more rapid and doesn't need to wait a few generations of crosses to figure out. Wheeee... It's a challenge.
I'm pining my hopes on full immersion vr. All the benefits of being your fursona in whatever style you like, without the anatomical issues that might restrain how you actually end up looking like and removing all the difficulty of understanding genetics enough to get the results you want. I suspect by the time our technology gets to a point where we can bioengineer people into furries, the ease, convenience, and versatility of not having to conform to physics and switching up a form with a click of a button with virtual reality will likely render the process moot.

I know that fooling around with that stuff can and will be a risky thing, and I've heared the horror stories of people who tried it surgically. But sometimes I'm at that stage of feeling unwell in my own body that I'd take anything, literally anything, to at least have it a tid-bit more like the species I identify as.
Also, considering that I'll never fully reach the ideal version of myself (strong physical alteration of the head would probably affect the brain and thus is out of question), having an anthropomorphic body would actually be a really good compromise between still being the person I am and caring for my desire to be more like the animal I see myself as.

DNA is closer to instruction sets or computer code, loading a toaster's firmware into a fridge will not make the fridge turn itself into a toaster. DNA is information, not incantation - it still needs the cellular machinery to run, so to speak. I really feel like shifting hair to be a bit more like fur and making it grow in more places would need a pretty minimal amount of work, especially compared to bones or organs.

just going to say on the topic of ethics and your kids not asking to be born furries... none of us were asked if we wanted to be born human so they will get over it just like we had to AND if they don't like it the hoops we jumped through will be there for them as well.
