- The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Steve Wilks three days after they lost Super Bowl LVIII to the Kansas City Chiefs and a little over a year after he was hired.
"It just ended up being not the right fit," said 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan during a Wednesday news conference.
"We felt pretty strongly that this was the decision that was best for our organization,” Shanahan added. “Even though it was one I didn’t want to make, it was something that once I realized that a different direction was what’s best for our organization, it’s something that I have to do.”

Any coach that chooses to receive the ball in overtime needs to be fired.
He did it because he believed they would score and wanted the defense rested to stop Mahomes... Did you listen to the press conference? It makes sense when you think about it. The defense was just out on the field, to keep them on the field when they're already tired is madness. Give it to the offense, let them score then stop Mahomes, if Mahomes somehow ties it up then you have a chance to score again. You may not agree with it, but I understand his reasoning.
It’s still a dumb decision. Mahomes gets the ball first the momentum swings on the defense and the pressure drops automatically because even if they give up a touchdown they still have the ability to go and score themselves.
They got the ball first, couldn’t score, and the defensive pressure rose 1000%. They folded, they lost.
My dude win or loose Wilks was out. Our defense was bad all season.
Everything said on this was on point. I'm not a Chiefs or 49ers fan, but the 49ers defense played ball. The offensive side was scared to play ball. They had the lead and played safe. U can't do that with mahomes, Brady, Manning or any quarterback like that. U gotta go to that ass, and score points everytime u got a chance. The 49ers recovered from McCaffrey's fumble early on. After that they still had control. U can't just have control and fill comfortable. You gotta keep scoring.
The defense went from number one last year to number 12 this year. End of story

He did call to receive the ball in OT which is a disadvantage under the new OT rules.
He did choose to pass with 2 minutes left of regulation on 3rd &4 where the only advantage at that point was to run the ball cuz if you don’t get the first the clock runs and KC is forced to use a timeout which they ended up using on the following drive to send it to OT.
This has become typical Kyle to blow it in the SB.
Abandoned run game, repeated 3 and outs gassed the defense. Bananahan sucks

Come on man you can’t take the number one defense in football and then end up being the number 26 rank defense and still keep your job. It just doesn’t work. That way my heart does go out to Steve Wilkes. I do wish she had one more year, but we’re ready to win now and his defense does not fit what we are doing.

This is clear overreaction. Win or lose, Wilks was on his way out. His firing was not a direct result of the superbowl plain and simple. But you’re right about one thing, Shanahan is a mess
