How long should you be on Spironolactone?

  • It’s hard to predict because everyone’s different. It’s really a personal choice on how long to be on #spironolactone. From experience, women who struggle with acne long term tend to experience acne coming back once it’s stopped. But if it’s mild, it can be well managed with topical treatments.
Since it takes 3 months to see full benefit from spironolactone, I recommend being on it for at least 6-12 months. It’s ideal and safe for long term use, stop if pregnant or planning to conceive, but safe during lactation.
    Any questions? 👇🏻

Hello, so this is what happened to me after taking this medicine for acne for 3 days.. Today I was going to my aunt's house which is 5th floor. the elevator wasn't working so I went down the stairs. when I reached there.. I literally went blackout. my eyes stopped seeing, my heart was beating fast, I was sweating, I couldn't talk or even call for emergency, I couldn't stand.. I was like am gonna die today right here.. Spironolactone is used to reduce blood pressure, so obviously my bp dropped from normal 80/70. so you can feel that is even risking my heart in the name of curing acne. at this point am mad at myself.. its better I use external creams than internal tablets. I love my kidneys and my heart. cuz they are my vitals and I know there are many people in the hospital wishing to have health. I hope this information helps you before you start these crazy medicines.

I was prescribed this for hirsutism too. That too 100mg. But I've been reading about this side effects and I haven't taken it yet.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I hope you feel better soon. It's really better to try to deal with acne in some other way than sacrificing your kidneys and heart.

I stopped taking it recently to conceive with my husband. I have veen on it since 2016. So after 7 years. And now, 4 months later, i am developing bald patches on my head, all my laser hair removal has reverted and is growing back, and i have massive clusters of bumps all down my chest, neck, and back. I dont think we, as women, are getting realistic information on coming off of it. Its terrible.

Agreed. I took it for about 4 years and when I even tried lowering the dose i would break out horribly pretty quickly. I would go back up to the higher dose and it would clear. I eventually stopped it and had to take accutane to clear up the horrible acne it causes me when i stopped. In addition, my hair also fell out. Never had hair problems prior. I am 100% sure it is related to the spiro. Hair on spiro was also horrible, it was thick, yes, but it was super dry and would break all the time. Skin on face was flawless though.

Hello Dr, if you take this long term for month / years will this affect your kidneys down the road? Are you at higher risk for kidney damage / failure? Does the dosage matter when it comes to taking it long term?

Haven’t been able to put on any decent muscle considering how much I lift and diet being really good. Currently looking to get on isotretinoin so maybe I can stop the spiro completely.
