  • Have you ever experienced a leak from your sink drain into the cabinet below? It might be as simple as needing to replace the plumber's putty that's sealing the drain to the sink.
    In this video, we'll show you how and when to use plumber's putty. And we'll show you the right way to do it along with a professional tip or two along the way. It's actually kind of fun to work with because plumber's putty is considered a soft-set sealant. That means it will stay soft and pliable (like play-doh!) and not crack like silicone.
    And you want a soft-set sealant in sink drain applications (where metal is the primary drain material) so future repairs are easier to make.

    Thank you so much for the video I was debating on whether you're silicone or plumber's putty and I am one of those guys that likes the old tried and true method so plumber's putty is what I'm going to use thank you

    I did this exactly as shown, leaks over time, possibly from filling sink with hot soapy water to wash dishes. I finally found a top black rubber seal at Ace Hardware and between the seal and plumbers putty no leaks, yet.

    Did exactly this tonight. It sure was easy but water still leaked all around strainer when I filled the sink with water. My sink drain does have plastic components, so did that make a difference? Guess I'll have to try 100%silicone next.

      My sink had both plastic seals and plumbers putty and it never leaked. I will use both on my install and see how it goes.

    I would have mentioned that when using plumbers putty on a metal sink, like you are, that you use STAINLESS plumbers putty.

      no it isn't.. that stuff sets rock hard. You can dismantle things with this stuff as it remains pliable.

    How do you remove 25 year old dried PP from around drain hole in stainless double sink. It's like cement

    • @1-Tom-Plumber

      You may want to try a heat gun or paint thinner. Please be careful when using both and make sure to have plenty of ventilation when using paint thinner.

    Does it ever dry? A plumber used this on my bathtub drain a month ago and when I'm cleaning the tub the putty still comes up on my sponge. Is that normal?

      It should only take at most few hours to set fully.

    • @ProclaimedHERETIC
      @ProclaimedHERETIC Před 7 měsíci

      This guy doesn't know what he's talking about. If you see plumbers putty, it's because your plumber was lazy and didn't fully clean it. Second, plumbers putty never really "dries" like a glue, nor does it "set". That's the whole point of using it how it's used. Take a toothpick and clean up the exposed putty, like your plumbers should have.
