I show the steps to install a kitchen sink basket strainer. You will need plumbers putty for this project. The plumbers putty will be your gasket under the basket strainer.

I was being charged over 1k for a kitchen sink leak. I paid them $49 for their quote and just did THIS! They wanted to replace the whole garbage disposal, basket strainer, rerun pipes etc. For a simple leak that comes through just the basket strainer. Thanks for your easy to follow instructions!! You're a life (and money) saver!

Wow, thank you! I tried like 6 times last night and kept getting a small leak. I decided to hold until morning and find a CZcams video to see what I was doing wrong. It was the damn cardboard! I definitely thought that was packaging garbage. Apparently not. I disassembled everything and added the cardboard ring in as you instructed and voila! No leaks! Thank you so much!

Another reason NOT to buy that special tool to keep the drain from rotating, the cheapo drain i just bought only has 3 tabs around the center, not 4, so the fancy tool would not have fit into it. pliers work just fine. GOOD TIP about saving the cardboard friction ring, i would have thought it was just for packaging & thrown it away.

  • @anonymousbob1

Thanks for the teaching. I didn't use enough putty the first time. The needle-nose plier tip worked but I tightened a pipe wrench on the handles of the pliers that jammed against the side of the sink and prevented the basket from spinning without a helper.

I'm glad I didn't put the sink in until I added everything the drain , faucet plumbing pipes a lot easier then doing most of it under the sink . And I had trouble cutting the counter top hole big enough jigsaw wouldn't cut close enough so I finally figured it out I flipped counter top over then finished cutting .

Awesome video! I have a question about the large strainer nut. How tight are you suppose to tighten it? I did it myself while holding the strainer with the ridged tool from the top. It never really tightened. The nut slipped teeth and it was loose until I got tired of turning the wrench. It didn't leak but I assume it will soon. Thanks for posting this video.

Sometimes I learn the hard way. I had the rubber gasket in the wrong place, resulting in the basket sitting slightly above the sink. This caused the water to pool around the drain. Hopefully, this video will keep someone else from making the same (dumb) mistake. 🤪🤪🤪

Very helpful. I came here to find out whether putty is needed UNDER the sink (duh. It's NOT.) and I saw the bit here about the cardboard gasket. While fixing my leaky sink, I found that the cardboard was put ON TOP of the rubber washer. THAT was probably the reason for the leak. I'm not sure whether that was MY fault or the previous occupant.

Hi, I have always used a wrench to get the nut snugged up and the putty compressed. If you have someone press down on the sink basket as you tighten it, you may get a good seal.

Hi, We need to replace the basket strainer but we have a PVC/plastic tailpiece. A new tailpiece washer comes with the new strainer. The existing tailpiece has a plastic nut to use in attaching the tailpiece to the bottom of sink strainer. The new basket has a metal nut for the same purpose. Is the metal nut required even when attaching a PVC tailpiece to the bottom of the steel drain basket? If so please explain the benefit of using the metal nut instead of the plastic nut in this example. Thanks for the video and any further input you can provide!

My sink strainer was leaking,, replace it with the type that has 3 screws underneath to tighten up, instead of screwing it on as shown here. Two advantages. One person can do it, do not need the tool to hold strainer because your not screwing it on. I will never use the screw on type again,,the washer turns and makes it leak sometimes. Bought from Home Depot, it is twice the weight, and cost 29.97.. worth every penny...

Hi, I took training from Oatey. The gentleman who trained me said the Stain Free plumbers putty can be used on any surface for plumbing projects. The only problem with ABS is the finish can be discolored or stained. For sink baskets with ABS bodies, the ABS is not seen.
The oil based plumbers putty can get absorbed into soft sink material and create discolored veins. If you have an old cultured marble sink, the oil based plumbers putty can actually break down the bond and cause the area around the drain to break away. New cultured marble uses a different material to prevent that.
