Old start, Cold Start 1956 Evinrude Lark on a Duracraft boat

- I brought the old Duracraft boat home to paint it for an upcoming show. I decided to get the motor running after about 7 years of sitting. I go through and check over the motor before starting. Also there is some bonus footage at the end.

Your boat is one of my all time favorite aluminium boats. It is a 1957 or 1958. NOT a '67 or anything from the '60's.
Would love to see it get the respect it deserves and take that 1970's windshield and take it to the dump.
Other than that windshield, it's beautiful, as is the motor.
Thank you for commenting. The windshield was what my dad could afford at the time when we got the boat. Don't fear though, I restored the boat later and found a more period correct windshield. Look for those videos on the channel. Thanks for watching!

Love old boats, just picked up a 1956 mirrocraft runabout, 15 footer with a 1986 Johnson 40hp
Needs TLC, going to end up breaking it down and media blasting, filling holes, sanding, painting, rebuilding the transom, and putting it all back together
Hi and thanks for watching, Yeah old boats are really unique. Sounds like you have a decent project there. Congrats on your Mirrocraft boat project! My boat here needed all of that plus the motor rebuilt. But I did it. Since you just got it, make sure that the motor is serviced with a new impeller. Working at a boat shop, I can't tell you how many people bought a motor, put it on their boat, and then overheated on the water. Good luck with your project!
those old Evinrudes and Johnson's were really built could be a little temperamental from time to time but always good engines

delmont boat industries. finally found a boat supplier.
I've got a 55/56 13hp Viking, which I think Johnson made/OMC...not too sure on specifics...Original condition. was given to me 9 years ago by a family friend and they kept it in meticulous condition with all of the maintenance records etc., I remember it as a kid in the 80's ..it was always in the guy's basement. I believe the last time it ran was the early 80's...One day soon, I hope to get it going. will need some pre start work, no doubt..ie the fogging oil you mentioned, just in case...a new impeller and prob a carb kit to list a few things. I keep forgetting I own the darn thing...When I was younger, my dad had an old 33 hp evinrude...late 60's early 70's, i believe. neat old thing. then we bought a 1972 Grew off of our neighbour. 17.5 feet with a 160hp 250CI inline six gm engine...went like a bat out of hell...I miss that engine!
That's neat. This boat and motor was my Great Uncles. It had been sitting outside next to a pine tree for many years until my cousin wanted to get rid of it. I had no clue it was aluminum or that it had a motor and trailer. Yeah, I would defiantly spray some fogging oil or normal oil in the cylinders of your engine before trying to start it just to make sure no damage occurs to the pistons or the wall. Also the carb kit for sure and new plugs. And probably impeller wouldn't be a bad idea. Good luck with your project. These old evinrudes are cool old motors.
Delmont Industries LTD The motor is branded as "Viking", which, here in Canada, was from an old famous department store, Eaton's. I remember old vaccum cleaners etc and such all branded Viking. The fellow who gave it to me, his father was high up in Eaton's and they had a lifetime discount with the store. I believe Johnson or OMC (outboard marine corp) manufactured it and although labelled as 13hp, it would keep up wiht a johnson 15hp. Just read here OMC was when Evinrude, ELTO, and johnson merged..I didnt know that,lol. Probably should change the lower gear oil, too. I'm thinking of taking it up to my sister in law's cottage to work on it as her cousin is well knowledgeable on engines. Love the retro look of yours! Ive also never heard of a Delmont. Quite a cool look towing the boat! Love the old stuff.

@@omcoutboardboy4421 Nice! The Dynamic was a few model years older than the Delmont which is 2 of the cars I have. The Delmont replaced the Dynamic.

Check out the AOMCI (Antique outboard Motor club) On Facebook. Lots of guys there are posting parts and have a wealth of knowledge. I am an OMC outboard expert. and have no experience with Merc's.
hey I'm looking to buy a 79' Johnson that the guy says it runs but needs a new impeller, he's asking 295 is that reasonable?
Depends on the horsepower. But that sounds like a good price to me. Of course, there is always the risk that the carb (carbs) may need to be cleaned and or rebuilt depending on if the motor has sat. The impeller is pretty easy to replace and should be done regardless. It is cheap insurance to make sure your motor stays cool.
I started my Johnson engine, but it won't stay running. Any suggestions??
+Loc Lam Has it been sitting for a long period of time? Usually it is either ignition or carburetor related problem. Since it starts I would rule out ignition.

i spent almost 2 hours trying to start my motor and not success i gave up cause my starter was hot as hell i am wondering if the weather is a factor? i live in alberta canada i put a brand new starter and voltage regulator too and i checked everything as well but no succes
any tips to get my motor going and i can winterize it thanks in advance.
Without seeing the motor, it sounds like there are one of two possible things going on assuming the motor has been running happily all summer. Either the motor is not getting enough fuel, or the engine is not producing spark. I would check to make sure that you have spark first. That is the easiest first step. Simply remove the spark plugs from the engine, and ground them to a large engine bolt. (make sure that you have them plugged back in to the appropriate wire) and rotate the engine a few times. There should be a noticable blue spark. If you have good spark, then the issue is probably fuel related. Check the carburetor and see if there is any crud in it. Any debris will clog up a carburetor.
I know that was alot. Hopefully that will help get your motor going.

why take the plugs out ? just spray into carb
I took the plugs out so that the fogging oil could coat the inside of the cylinders as the engine was turning. If I had sprayed it through the carb, the oil would not have coated the cylinder walls possibly causing scoring from sitting idle for so long. . . It was just a precautionary step. If the engine had been running, I would have sprayed the oil directly into the carb.

Wouldn't it be SUPER SIMPLE to convert that to 12V; just swap on a starter from a very slightly later OMC? Would make battery replacement a Heck of a lot easier and cheaper...those 6V batteries are hard to find and they charge a premium price for what you're getting. A good strong 12V battery can be had for $25 at any bone yard.

Morndern gas destroys the carbs. Use Rec Fuel only and SeaFoam
Agreed. Only problem is there is no rec fuel in my area. I use premium treated with Stabil- marine blue to neutralize the ethanol. Also, I do not use seafoam. It is a good product for keeping the fuel system clean, but it is not a miracle product like many folks think it is. Thank you for your comment.
