Zakaria: Something very unusual is happening in Israel. Military officials are turning on Netanyahu

  • As President Joe Biden and some Israeli officials call for a viable post-war plan for Gaza's governance and reconstruction, Fareed argues Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu hasn't offered one because continuing the war against Hamas will allow him to stay in power and avoid a looming prosecution.

It gets even better. Not only do we provide tons of weapons to destroy the Gaza Strip and the lives of people living there, we have paid for the refugee camps the Palestinians have lived in for decades. We are now paying for a pier for aid that is immediately blocked once it reaches shore. And we paid to air drop food that Palestinians drowned trying to swim to when it was dropped in the sea. You literally cannot make this up.

Both parties are heavily captured by special interests on this particular issue, and have been for decades. The average voter might change their votes on the economy, or birth control/abortion, or taxes (or cuts to the wealthy), but on Israe!/Palestine most people couldn't give you any details beyond the phrase "two state solution" (not specifics, just the phrase). If you're a politician, it would be politically suicidal to take the "wrong" position in your party on abortion, immigration, lgbt issues, etc... but on !srael basically they just prioritize not getting primaried or sandbagged in the general because the voters won't really know or care.
After decades of this, the chess pieces are in place so when a genuine crisis of security and/or conscience emerges, it is now very hard to move the needle. The political momentum, pressure, and soft power on this issue meant that it was HIGHLY unlikely those weapons would be withheld. Now that people see more details on this issue that might change, but the political winds won't change immediately.

It also ignores the larger question of the events which led up to October 7, and for that one must go back as far as the ongoing ethnic cleansing of Palestine, which was inextricably linked to the 1947-49 War, and which has continued since. Just look at what has been happening in the West Bank since before October 7, but which has escalated since that date.
Hamas has no power in the West Bank, and none of the Palestinians involved in that atrocity came from the West Bank, yet hundreds of Palestinians have been killed, and thousands have been arrested and not charged with any crime. Israel calls it “administrative detention”, yet these detainees are unable to see a lawyer, let alone a courtroom, and detained children aren’t able to even see their parents. How is this any different than being an Israeli hostage?
Yet this practice of stealing Palestinian land, destroying Palestinian homes and businesses, and “administrative detention” has been going on for years, with little awareness in the Western media, and no protest at all from Western governments. The extremist settler movement (every bit as violent as Hamas) has been quite explicit and open about their goal - to cleanse the West Bank and East Jerusalem of the indigenous (which is to say Palestinian) population. Lest we forget it wasn’t Hamas, or even a Palestinian, who was responsible for the assassination of the only Israeli Prime Minister who seriously considered making genuine compromise needed for a peaceful solution. It was an Israeli settler extremist.

What so many Americans are still ignorant of is that Israel killed it's own citizens on Oct 7th in a false flag using it's Hannibal Directive to serve as a pretext for a invasion, annexation & ethnic cleansing of Gaza. See Max Blumenthals report at the GrayZone.

Most people are afraid to pick a fight with Netanyahu during an active war, and with good reason. So military officials putting pressure on Netanyahu now is telling. It means fear of upending the war effort is losing out to fear that Netanyahu is stringing this thing along more than it needs to be.
