Cheapies can be modified or beaten with a claw hammer and used as screwdrivers without feeling bad about it. Good enough to do the job but not so expensive you'll cry if it breaks. Just like carrying a 20 dollar buck or case knife instead of a 200 dollar folder.
Bingo. My Kershaw folder was 15 bucks on sale at BIG5. If I had a Bill Moran knife, I'd never cut anything but string! I think the same rule applies to tools - if I had a chisel made out of meteorite, I'd never use it. But cheapies? I'll use them all day!
Cheap chisels are made from cheap steel. They are most often those stubby butt chisels, too, so you only get about 3 inches of steel. I use them on rough construction where I am probably going to hack into something that will ruin the edge, and I will have to grind it out. But their use is limited.
