Sharpening a Chisel in under a Minute | Paul Sellers

  • I see more and more options for sharpening a chisel and yet, with no mechanical means at all, I go from a chisel, I have dulled to surgically sharp in about a minute or less.
    The fact is I never need to use a grinding wheel, and I was taught to sharpen by the masters of sharpening in my apprenticeship days 58 years ago which I have never strayed from because I found every other option too slow and, dare I say it, DULL and time consuming no matter which method or which machine!

      I personally have never used a jig to sharpen tools.
      (Though I kinda want one specifically for wood turning gouges, because I am quite lousy at sharpening them.)
      I just can't see a reason to use one for the majority of cutting tools.
      Chisels are so absurdly easy to sharpen, I can't say I've never had trouble with one.
      Sure they aren't dead square, but tell me the last time you needed a PERFECTLY square chisel.
      Knives, sharpening them has always been so easy, I could not imagine putting one in a jig.

    • @HandToolBuilds
      @HandToolBuilds Před 11 měsíci +2

    All my chisels have a double bevel. The main problem I have when sharpening is managing to keep the chisel at the correct angle to the stone, especially as the bevel I'm trying to sharpen is quite narrow and not at the same angle as the main bevel. I end up with no clear break between the two bevelled surfaces, or in other words, a rounded bevel. Maybe it would be easier if I only had one, fairly wide, bevel to sharpen? Should I get a grinding wheel and grind all my chisels to one bevel and start again?

  • @michaelkonkel4394
    @michaelkonkel4394 Před 11 měsíci +1

    Thank you so much! Just one question: How much pressure do you apply on the stones? It looks like it is quite a lot - but to my knowledge almost no pressure at all should be applied to diamond stones.

    • @ricos1497
      @ricos1497 Před 11 měsíci +3

      You don't need a lot. When Paul sharpens, the hand holding the chisel is just a rigid jog, in effect, retaining the sharpening angle. The pressure comes from the two fingers of the other hand.
      That changes with the strop, where more pressure is required, which you notice in the video. Once you've used a strop, the required pressure becomes fairly intuitive, it's difficult to describe.

      Water stones and oil stones will work but wear away and need, often,
      to be flattened, with a flattening stone. Modern diamond stones are
      the better way and they cost like "the modern better way".
      DMT diamond stones are the best and they are very proud of their products. $$$$$
      For the leather: any piece of heavy leather, about 1/8" thick (or more), glued rough
      side up, to a piece of, evenly flat, wood, will do. Don't forget the green honing compound.

      @Petestleger Před 11 měsíci +2

      I'm not in Paul's league, but I was a site carpenter for a few years, and I'd say yes, ish. More important is getting a feel for your tools. Get used to how a newly-sharpened chisel or plane feels compared to one you've used for a while on the various types of wood. It comes with doing it, and being aware of how your tool (oooh errrr missus) is performing versus what you can reasonably expect. You will get the hang of it the more you do. But if in doubt, sharpen. No harm done, and you're honing (see what I did there?) your sharpening skills.
