People really nailed it when they said losing Matthew Perry felt like losing an actual friend. I feel like I knew him, even though I didn’t. He’s the only celebrity who I’ve ever felt connected to even though we never met. RIP friend. You were loved.

I’m a retired paramedic and I have seen addicts in all shapes, sizes colors, age groups, etc. etc. Addiction does not discriminate. He is very lucky that he could afford to go to all the treatment centers he went to. Some people aren’t so lucky. I read this book and it was fantastic. I wish him nothing but the best and it is my hope that we take addiction a lot more seriously in this country and have a better facilities for people to get well in.
I wish he'd get more political and help with the decriminalization of drugs as a first step. In my province our conservative government is building a new prison that everybody says we don't need, but as the homeless keep growing, thats the kind of housing he's thinking of.

Agreed. Hes very wealthy from one mildly funny TV show and has like most addicts taken a lifetime to start dealing with their addiction. I've loved and married addicts and have a son that's an addict too. I have a very jaded view on addiction sadly. I find them all similar and self loathing and at the same time selfish. As we all know they have to get better alone and start to grow up as they never mature until they get and stay sober. This guy does sound medicated but who knows? But by saying I didn't want this says a lot. He's still in victim mode and has much work to still. And BTW blaming colic for your addiction is ridiculous. I had 2 kids with it and one is an addiction. He needs to continue to grow up and become a really good human.
@@londonwright173 Thats kind of unfair. What we know about addiction is that it affects the brain in very particular ways. Soem people can take drug a and it has no affect, others become addicts. Of couse its self - ish, when you get hit by a bus you go to the hospital. Your process of getting better is 'about you'. If you are implying addicts can never be selfless then I have a wealth of samples saying thats very wrong, in fact many addicts are fighting for legislation because of OTHER addicts.
Addiction is a disease, and there is no evidence that ONLY can they get better alone, in fact thats found to be very untrue. Most addicts, unlike most of hte public, already live in a social culture of other addicts and dealers. Nothing ANYBODY does do they do alone. Addiction is now described as a disease, same with alcoholism, and thats why they have AA, which isn't great, but its supportive. Like ANYTHING in life it ultimately rests on an individual, but they certainly don't have to 'do it alone', in fact there is no reason for them to do so.
I didn't listen to him talk, its the issue I'm interested in and criminalization is problem one. After that then like alcoholics we can try to deal with it in other ways. But his position is irrelevant, good luck to him, its addiction services and public policy that are the issue. As you say, INDIVIDUALLY its not like I can adopt an addict and 'turn them around', its just too much. It takes a social stance. And sadly we live in a celebrity world, so he does have a platform, and I say it because he's already DONE debates in europe on decriminalization.
In Canada we have free residential treatment centres. I’ve been 4 times. Treatment centres aren’t the solution. It gives you sometime to clear the fog but it’s recovery groups “AA, NA, CA” that saves lives. 3 years clean myself. I’ve seen countless people come in to these rooms while at treatment centres and then once the rehab stint is done, not come around anymore and then end up dead or back in prison or rehab again. AA is the only thing that works and has worked for almost 100 years. Mathew knows this well and addicts and alcoholics know this very well. It’s the ignorant public who for some reason think it’s a cult that deters sick people from walking through a door and asking for help. All AA is is 1 alcoholic helping another. There is no forced religion, no forced anything. I sat beside an atheist today, nobody cares. Once we can stop stigmatizing groups then we can really help people. But we can’t even stop stigmatizing the sick, let alone the solution. It’s obviously an anonymous program but as someone who attends meetings I can tell you that everything he is saying about addiction and the solution is coming from a place of AA. We speak a language and he is speaking it and I love it.

@@datacipher My Grandfather smoked his whole life. I was about 10 years old when my mother said to him, 'If you ever want to see your grandchildren graduate, you have to stop immediately.'. Tears welled up in his eyes when he realized what exactly was at stake. He gave it up immediately. Three years later he died of lung cancer. It was really sad and destroyed me. My mother said to me- 'Don't ever smoke. Please don't put your family through what your Grandfather put us through." I agreed. At 28, I have never touched a cigarette. I must say, I feel a very slight sense of regret for never having done it, because your post gave me cancer anyway.
My heart breaks for this beautiful man. No one knows how hard he struggled.
I do. I've been drinking for 43 years. How I survived, I don't know. If Matthew had admitted to using, instead of saying he could help his fellow addicts, he would have found a world of support~the "penguins," as he described his friends, especially. But you can't help an addict until you are 100% clean and sober, and he never was.
My mother was an alcoholic and eventually died from her addiction. I found her passed away at her home. Reading about Matthew’s addiction has given me a different point of view . It’s like he’s explaining exactly how she felt , why it was so hard for her to stop. It is a massively misunderstood disease that deserves far more understanding and respect.

I was touched by your message❤ after a life time of alcohol abuse I am finally 2 years sober at the age of 70. Its a miracle, and compassionate friends and family and trained support workers , are the reason I have been able to achieve my aim . To own my alcoholism was the beginning of recovery . Matthew Perry helped me a lot , witnessing some of his struggle and , in later years his path to recovery . The honesty of people like Matthew is so very brave , and helps break down the myths about addiction . Matthew brought joy and honesty as a person and I miss him even though I didn't know him. R.I.P. dear soul 🙏🙏🙏
@@frannyyamuna I have so much respect for anyone who manages to beat addiction . Even the people who try and fail , at least they tried . I grew up with addiction. It took my childhood from me . I lost my father to cancer , so I couldn’t understand why she was choosing to destroy her health . It took me a long time to realise it wasn’t her choice . It is a disease .

Omg! Its like you reading my mind. My father was an alcoholic and it killed him. I have never forgave him till i read Matthews book. Its eye opening isnt it!
@@dianahalili1658 the trouble with my mother was she never admitted she had a problem . She ‘ just liked a drink ‘ so she never sought out help or even tried to detox, not once … she even turned up to my wedding drunk and made a scene . I was forced to care for her and I hated what she was doing to our family … but she was ill . I wish I knew then what I know now !
Matthews book helped me forgive and to make peace with the past . He was a wonderful human being
It's only misunderstood by those who either consciously choose not to study the massive amounts of available data on it, or who don't have the IQ to do so. He's so ridiculously far from the first addict to describe EVERY word of this. My Mom (68), and younger brother (43) both died from addiction (alcohol as the primary for both). It's a cruel, awful, heartbreaking disease. It's deeply frustrating and profoundly painful for those who love an addict. RIP to Matthew AND anyone/everyone else whose life was cut short by this tragic illness. Including your Mom... I relate. I'm so grateful he was an outspoken advocate for addicts and that this book was released prior to the end of his life. His fight is over.... may he rest easy at last.

I celebrated 17 years clean and sober back in August but around this time last year I almost went back out, was going through a horrible time. I read Matt's book cover to cover and I credit that experience for helping to keep me sober. Rip Matt and THANK YOU

When Matthew speaks about feeling better after a drink, I knew what he meant. This life is so harsh and it's difficult to fit in. I think he was a sensitive soul who struggled with this life. I hope his Legacy will help others with addiction. Rest in Peace Matthew, you will be missed.

He was very sensitive. In friends interview Lisa made it sound like they all keep in contact. But when James corden asked "who doesn't pick-up" he said no one calls me then breaks down in tears.
He was very lonely too i feel and missed his "friends" cast.
this interview helped me make peace with him passing. he, obviously, finally had a goal, had forgiven himself, and despite of his health issues he still was witty and still a beautiful person who helped a lot of us. Thank you Matthew

As an early intervention therapist, an attachment and trauma specialist for more than 40 yrs, it is upsetting to hear what Matthew's parents were told to do. I heard laughter in the audience because they do not understand what he is saying. But it is SO IMPORTANT for the public to learn and hear the impact of a Dr's prescription of phenobarbital to a 30 day old infant, for 30 days. I think what he doesn't realize even to this day is that his infant self became accustomed to this substance: it is not genetic, it is not a "disease" as such, but a result of early exposure to a highly addictive substance, ie phenobarbital. This is an early adaptation for need of a substance, fed to this baby Matthew. This is not ok, it is tragic - and the effect on Matthew's life has been profound. But he is strong, intact and here to make a statement. Please read Gabor Mate's books, In the Realm of Hungry Ghosts, and his recent book The Myth of Normal to gain greater understanding of addictions. Thank you, Matthew Perry, for being brave and determined to share your personal history.

the sad part is that he had to go through withdrawal as a baby!! can you imagine the pain, helplessness and confusion??!! this surely must've damaged him and set him up for addiction later on. anything intense like that gets seared into one's subconscious and must be dealt with eventually.

I can't believe you don't know how genetic alcoholism is. I mean the stuff his parents gave him may have exacerbated it. I do agree there. But for alcoholics with that gene, they all, every one, have that exact same 1st time experience with alcohol that people without the genes don't experience. Our body metabolizes alcohol differently than normal people from the get go. We experience the insane cravings from the 1st time because of that metabolizing. For many of us that had nothing as a child, we experience the exact same thing he experienced. My buddy drank 2 wine coolers, I drank 10 until it was all gone. That was my first time at 16 years old. But numbers have proven that the chance of being alcoholic is largely determined by the family history. For people like us, we are alcoholic long before we ever take the 1st drink. We don't drink ourselves into alcoholism.

His opening story brought back a memory. When I was 8, I saw my aunt giving my 3 year old cousin sips of beer at a family gathering. I was shocked and questioned her doing that. She chastised me, saying, "Oh it's good for him". He drank himself to death by the time he was 30. I guess at 8, I was wise beyond my years.
I am so very saddened that the "rest of his life" was only 11 months. He struggled so much in his life, but brought so much joy to many, myself included. He was brave to share his story. I pray it helps many people like he wanted it to. RIP Matthew. I pray God has brought you peace and comfort. Thank you for all the laughs, and I am so sorry that your life ended too soon.

I didn't follow Friends at all in the 90s but after he died I started watching videos of him talking about addiction and his struggles with it. And I found that very illuminating and revealing. I guess we should now all know why he talked with such directness and gravity in his voice about his matter - he clearly knew he was near death. And the world's lost a voice that was badly needed to shine light on this vital issue. Not one human being, not one soul, has gained anything from this person's death. We've lost, we've all lost.
Other babies may have been given this too for colic. (Phenobarbital) Not sure. Maybe this was given in the olden days before 1970. Hope it did not have long term affects on him though. May never know
What were the autopsy results? Anyone know?

my wife and I are so saddened by Matthew’s death and we weren’t even avid watchers of the friends series when it was on. But there’s something about his honesty and vulnerability that is touching and inspiring.

Mathew seemed to have reached a good place before his passing. He seemed happy and had a focus for what was important to him so I’m glad he made it there. His acting work will be remembered and celebrated. His advocacy will be appreciated and his openness and honesty will continue to help people. Condolences to all his loved ones. Rest in Peace Mathew, you will be greatly missed.
His book is incredibly powerful to other addicts. It feels like he was given one last mission to help as many people as possible, whilst sober, before he had to go. The book, and these interviews that he did to publicise them, will absolutely save lives.
I feel certain it will absolutely not save lives. I had an alcoholic/cocaine-addicted partner for 15 years. So I know addicts. And I know the hard truth - they will not get better until they actually want to.
I learned this the long, hard way, by wasting 15 years of my life trying to save someone who did not ever, in all that time, even get to the 1st step of admitting that he was an addict/alcoholic.
So. The book will not save lives, because the only way alcoholics/addicts get better is if they realize it themselves. A book can't make them realize it. A partner can't, a wife can't, a family can't - only they can.
The realization has to come from them, not a book.
On top of that, I guarantee you that addicts are not going to be reading this book, because denial goes hand-in-hand with addiction - the last thing on earth an addict is going to do is read about addiction. They're too busy denying it.

@@sharonmorine5407 I hope you do still read it Sharon - I don't know if I read it as the legacy he wanted to leave when I read it before he passed away, but it certainly feels like that's what it is now. It deserves to be read by many, for years to come.
I lost my 24 year old son to alcoholism this year. He was my heart. We (my son and I) struggled for years to get him help but found none, despite multiple trips to psychologists, doctors, hospital stays and rehab. He was such a huge fan of Friends and Matthew Perry. I can’t help but wish this book had come sooner, that this interview had come sooner…my son hated himself because of his disease and I wish he’d had the chance to hear a person he so admired and who was bigger than life, with all the fame and money imaginable, say two things~ that having the dream life doesn’t fix what’s broken inside you, and that it’s not your fault. Thank you Matthew for your honesty, your bravery, and your vulnerability. You will help more people than you can possibly imagine. Godspeed.
He is very young to die to liver problems. Or were there shenanigans in the hospital? A girl who works for my girlfriend died from drinking and the family is not being given the coroners report after several months.

I am so terribly sorry for the loss of your son!
My younger brother suffered from Alcoholism. He began drinking as a teenager. We both grew up with our Dad being an Alcoholic. A few years before my brother’s death at 34 years old, he came to me and wanted to go to a Rehab. I took him to the closest Emergency Room near my home trying to get him help with detoxing. At first, the Hospital refused to treat my brother. However, after seeing how emotional I was trying to get my brother help…one of the Hospital Staff Members put my brother and myself in a backroom in the Hospital. It took over twelve (12) hours before my brother began to show severe detoxification symptoms. He was admitted to the Hospital at that time. On the next day, when I went to visit my brother, he had been moved into an Intensive Cardiac Care Unit. Apparently there was an issue going on with my brother’s heart. He stayed in that Hospital for two (2) weeks and was going to be released. However, because my brother had no Health Insurance, the Hospital Social Worker and myself were not able to have my brother admitted into any type of an Alcoholic Rehabilitation Facility. My brother died on March 27, 2003. His Autopsy revealed that his death was caused but Cardiomyopathy which was from drinking excessive amounts of Alcohol. Sometimes when a person wants and needs help…there is none available!
This is one of the most honest interviews I've ever seen - he was so open, relaxed, didn't try to play Chandler or be funny, and so vulnerable. It is such a great discovery of this beautiful person who suffered much but still stayed so deeply human. Rest in peace Matthew, we will remember you like this.
Hate to say it but he’s probably high. The way he’s talking sounds like it too… slightly slurring. This isn’t a criticism of him or his character… but I’ve been around people on opiates and this is exactly how they talk when they’ve taken a LOT.

Many people talk like this without being "high", and he wasn't young anymore, things change. And I think he was under specific doctor medication nevertheless, exactly because of his addictions etc
He had several surgeries a few of which resulted in comas. Basically he sounds like a person recovering from a stroke. My gramma had several diabetes related strokes back in the day and it caused slurred speech and even some facial paralysis

I was a full blown addict/junkie for 13 years and i know exactly the struggle he went through and addiction doesnt care what your age is or what race you are, addiction has one purpose in the end and that is to ultimately take your life in every sense of the word. I lost everything and everyone and then i was reborn the day my daughter was born, she saved my life. I will never use again cause my baby girl needs her daddy in her life forever. To all the addicts out there, i feel your pain, but believe me, there is hope and there is a way out of that life, please dont let yourself be just another statistic. Your life means something, believe in yourselves like i chose to believe in myself.

I am so happy for you! Our oldest struggled for years, but is currently doing extremely well. One day at a time is what they always say, but she used to say that and end up back to rock bottom. Now she says never again. I'll always worry, but I try to spend more time being grateful for how well she's doing right now.

Imagine you have a severe panic attack, and severe case of the flu everytime you put your phone down, or don't eat sugar, lasts for 30-60 days and that's what opiate addiction is like.
No we don't. There's no shortage of people who don't struggle with addiction.
This makes me just want to hug him. Hug him to thank him for his bravery, his honesty, his heart, and his talent that he shared with us all. Growing up with an alcoholic teaches you it isn’t a choice. It is a disease and like he said, it doesn’t mean you’re weak by any means. My heart break for his family and friends, because I know the pain of losing a recovering alcoholic once they are getting their life back on the right path, are repairing relationships and have a vision to accomplish so much more. His words will live on and continue to heal more lives long after we are gone.
His transparency and harsh honesty here about his addiction will stick with me forever. It's not easy. RIP brother.

As a parent thankful for the advice like this given to me, to intentionally get on your chill speed around them and NOTICE them. Miracles occurred when I did that around my little one. They feel seen and that love sinks deep in them.

I always got this sense that he didn’t ever feel like he was good enough & that makes me so sad bc he was good enough. He was and will always be an inspiration. He went through hell and back & the fact he stood up every day & was able to bring Chandler Bing to life & create this iconic character that helped millions of us around the world deal with anxiety and depression. Thats the thing, people have a pre conceived notion that addicts aren't good people. When in fact they are the best people because they have so much empathy and understanding of others. I just wish the stigma of addicts was understood more by non addicts

The stories of his infancy, youth and how he was raised show just how much it was responsible for his addiction.... its so sad. it shows just how unbelievably important childhood is to creating a content, healthy adult.
This may be true, and I’m sure it didn’t help him any, but tons of addicts are raised in solid homes and still have the disease. I think that’s his point with emphasizing it being a disease, sometimes it just happens because of genetics.
I grew up in a home with two alcoholic parents and also struggled with addiction myself and everything he says resonates so strongly. Going to miss this man ❤ RIP

There are some celebrity deaths that just hit you so strongly. You’re attached to their characters and then their actual personalities. You bind with moments in your life and their shows or movies or even their true personalities. Matthew and Chandler are both incredibly special and important for so many moments of our lives. This one hurts and it hurts bad. Poor man suffered so deeply. I truly hope he’s resting somewhere filled with love.
So very true. His death bothers me so much. There are not enough words. Matthew was so very special. I think that none of us except his close family and friends knew all of his struggles. Such a tragedy, that this wonderful man lost the battle.
I'm feeling the same. This is the first death since River Phoenix, that has really hit home. Matthew Perry and his character, Chandler, represent my generation. I see so many of my friends in him. He is only a few years older than me, and I think that is part of why this hurts so much. We are getting older, and we are not invincible. Those of us who partied hard or maybe haven't taken the best care of our bodies are finding that it eventually catches up to you.

His death really did seem to hit a lot of people hard.
Drugs and alcohol sure didn't help with Matt's long term health, but he also took that damned shot and promoted it with t-shirts on his Instagram. People are in total denial about it. There are a ton of people young and old prematurely dying, or, they had successfully battled health issues and then after taking the shot, their cancer in remission, etc went wild, like Jimmy Buffett's and Suzanne Somers. Teens dropping dead all over the country from heart attacks. It's insane, and yet all of you zombies just believe all the liars in mass media who get tons of money from Big Pharma. A war crime has been committed by Big Pharma, the govt and mass media and none of you care or will even look into it. Sad.......

I know he wants to be remembered for helping people first and foremost, not as a character in a sitcom, but I think he perhaps didn’t realise the extent of people he helped ‘just’ by playing a character on Friends.
A safe escape and antidote to a sometimes overwhelming world, a restbite from the pressures of daily life.
He’s left a lasting legacy in the sharing of his story, I’m sure his parents, friends and loved ones will be so incredibly proud of him.

I totally agree with what you said. He was that safe escape for so many even if he couldn't be for himself. Friends, The Whole Nine Yards, and all his other work is what may have stopped some people from taking that drink or pill. Shows with that much humor soothed the soul in the healthiest of ways making life a little easier to take. I'm eternally grateful that he shared his story with the world. He really covered all his bases when it came to helping people, and I hope he sees the amazing impact he has made on so many.

My sister was a heavily alcoholic. My family tried everything we possibly could to try and help her. For 8 years she just got worse, wrapped up with the wrong crowd. Meeting a guy with the same alcoholism addiction and drugs, who murdered her in 2020.
I'm currently listening to MP book, and watching this has made me understand my sister's mindset at her time of alcohol and drug use. It breaks my heart.

Matthew, may not have realised at the time, that he was helping people that watched friends. He entered into so many homes, DV homes, Abusive homes, poor homes, people battling an illness, grieving home, etc and for just that 20min some people/children were able to have escapism, peace, hope or whatever friends episodes did to the individual. This is so true. I was bleeding and cramping whole pregnant from a high stress situation, and I intuitively knew to relax instead of think about it and go to a doctor. I laid down and said to my husband, “Just put on friends and don’t talk to me.” I had the series on DVD, just put one disc in after another until it stopped. As my son was growing up, we continued to utilize that that show for stress relief.

His sudden death at only 54 has hit so many people hard. The years of substance abuse had clearly taken a toll on him physically, but it was clear he wanted his experience with the "Big Terrible Thing" to help others. Such a shame he did not have more time.

As a woman who has struggled with depression and anxiety for most of my life, I had the EXACT same experience when I got tipsy for the first time at 20. I literally thought "This is how normal people must feel". I've since gone through periods where I drink way too heavily but I'm trying to stop because I could easily picture myself spiraling in a similar manner as Matty. Mental health problems and addiction are no joke. RIP Matty. 🥺 Gone too soon 🪽❤️

You think about a beer until you get it and it feels so good that now you can live through the day. The feeling wears off so you need more until you get drunk enough. even to be able to sleep because you pass out. Its hard. picking up the book tomorrow. RIP my Friend

I didn’t see Matthew Perry as a celebrity, in the sense that some people view celebrities being immune to hardship. I saw him as the human being he was, a man who deserved true happiness. I’ve always felt an emotional connect to Matthew Perry, beyond Chandler Bing. Especially while reading his memoir. I hope more than anything he felt peace in his last months of life. Truly a loss.

Same here but with sleeping pills. I have tried every drug never got addicted and never smoke a cig in my life. Since Xmas of 2009 till now every night I take (8-15 per night) 50mg of those sleep gel pills. There were a few times where I took 20-25 in one night.
Please continue trying. He left this world clean, he was trying.

Rewatching this after learning that he's gone. We never truly know someone's struggle but Matthew decided to share his in his book. His pain was indescribable but I hope he can rest now. I'm speechless and so sad for his suffering when he brought so much laughter and light to other people. He reached true enlightenment and self-awareness here and I'm glad of that. He came full circle but I'm also dismayed that his story ended like this. He truly made it his mission to understand his disease and the affliction he was so tortured by.

Intelligence is a curse for some of us. Addiction loves intelligence. It takes us a places we’d never see without it. I’ve always wished I was dumb, slow, simple. I’d have nothing to quench if I wasn’t intelligent. There is such a thing as being too smart.

I have always felt that Friends was completely over-rated. Well, okay, to be honest, I personally think it's a really bad show. Most of the actor in it are actors that drive me batty, ie David Schwimmer and Courtney Cox. None of them are good actors, with the exception of Matthew Perry and whats-her-name that played Pheobe.
And the plot wasn't interesting, it was just a soap opera, really. Like, it should have been on in the middle of the afternoon, after Days Of Our Lives.
It was just so bland, and unrealistic, and cheesy.
Matthew Perry does seem like a genuinely nice person, though. But, at the same time, I had an addicted/alcoholic partner for over fifteen years, so I know the toll that addiction takes on those close the addict. It ruined my life. So although I do think he seems like a genuinely nice guy, I can't help but think of all the people who he no doubt hurt and destroyed.
As a therapist I find his analysis and message so powerful. You are helping and will help so many people, I am deeply sad for this world to miss your beautiful presence. But you're also bringing a lot of resources for people who don't feel aware or resourced enough to understand how complex and hard is do deal with addictions. Sending you a big hug from here. ❤
