Welcome to Monster of the Week! This week we're talking about the mercury dragon, a creature that originally debuted in AD&D 2E! This metallic dragon is sort of the black sheep of the metallic dragon family tree in D&D on account of the fact that they are completely insane... well, mostly insane anyways.

Where the additional Chromatics were hybrids of the existing ones, the additional Metallics always seem to be "reflections" or "younger brothers" of a specific existing Metallic, or maybe more accurately a more exaggerated version. The Steel feels like an echo or exaggeration of the Silver, and the Mercury of the Brass. I wonder if this will continue.

For the portal idea it would be funny/interesting if when the party meets the mercury dragon there's some sort of fight between them the dragon and a 3rd party where one of the enemies falls into the volcano and into a pool of lava visibly being burned to death, then having the dragon try to convince the party point to what looks like the same pool, but slightly to the side of where the enemy fell and try to convince the party that there's definitely an invisible portal to the fey in that particular part of the lava. It can change its shape from that of a dragon, to an amorphous oozing metal that can fit through tight spaces and act sort of like quick sand if you step in it. It would sleep in this liquid form, which could result in unwary adventures stumbling into it in the treasure hoard, only to become stuck - then watch in horror as the rest of the liquid metal around them rises up into the form of a dragon that now has them grappled and helpless.

While I never expeirenced fighting it, mercury dragons was the most fun I ever had in dnd. So for the fast talking we basically acted that if you don't pay attention you can easily get lost, they talk about whatever came to their mind so there would be a lot of "oh i just remembered about this" and start rambling about that new subject until they get back to a previous topic, and for emotive words they'd repeat often so "YeYEYEYYEYEYYEEYYEEYESS". For the fact they want vastily different treasures we had it so the bards was there to shine because if you can passionately info dump enough to entice them they'd trade with you, but obviously you need things that have similar levels of value and you don't want to lie to them. So essentially a random card won't be able to be traded for a magical sword but if you can basically describe it like it's magic the gathering's black lotus and talk about how it's super rare and powerful in that popular game and how sought after it is you can get it to want it. Think someone who doesn't know magic the gathering but you are able to explain how they got some super rare card in a pack they tried out, but again if you hype something up for valuble things and you give them something super common like a shivan dragon well then you got a powerful enemy so best to be honest. But that doesn't mean it had to be rare. you creating a painting that matters a lot to you about a location that you talk about the great memories you had will be intersting to them. Now because we talked with the dragon for hours we got friendly and the dragon would constantly want to hear stories and joined in on some and some fights. We had it basically as a sort of godzilla where it's breath weapon catches things on fire, blinds and it has some push to it but it's more so from catching on fire and for the mercury if you come to direct contact with it for too long it'll cause the effects but also it can sort of flip a switch that in combat it kind of radidates it so if you're close to it enough to melee fight that it also has the effect. We basically described it as like it's sweating out the radiation while in combat because it's being so active fighting. How we ended it because our friend Curjira was with us to save the day they were known and they found a new favorite thing to collect, things people made of them. Dolls, paintings, sculptures, stories, songs, etc. If it was of curjira they wanted to know and loved to see people's creativity they became their most treasured possessions because curjira meant to much to that person that they created things to show thier love and they're so happy to be able to show curjira it. Think like you designed pikachu and you are able to see all the amazing art people made using pikachu.

I think I'm definitely using this in a weird way...
You mentioned that their lairs are pretty much any chaotic location, especially volcanos, but what if instead of a traditional lair, this dragon took control of an abandoned, but still mostly working dungeon?
If you think something similar to ToA, the traps and puzzles inside a large dungeon could be chaotic enough to keep the dragon entertained, they can simply keep a large room deep in the dungeon to be the actual place they reside in, and the whole dungeon can serve as their hoard.
The reason that this feels especially funny to me, is that now, this dragon doesn't only need to collect objects, but he can also collect adventurers, what's more chaotic than a PC after all? It can be a easy start to a dungeon-based campaign to have characters from all over randomly knocked out in their adventures by this dragon and brought to the dungeon, getting lost deep inside it, they would meet other adventurers and find treasures, all while being great entertainment for the dragon, and I don't think it would even go against the dragon's good alignment, because in the dragon's eyes, they're giving the adventurers a favour, giving them the adventure that they're looking for, while also adding a new piece to their hoard.

I was messing around with a concept for a desert-based dragon that was able to utilise the sand to its advantage by turning it to glass. This meant it could trap characters' feet in glass by melting it below them (also dealing a small amount of fire damage), reducing their movement speed by melting the sand caught in folds and gaps in their armour into glass, or whip up a sandstorm before turning the whirling sand into a storm of glass daggers

@DungeonDad, I love the way you have described and adapted this thing, which I read as basically "the ADHD dragon." Here is another possible source of plot hooks based on my...I mean, this dragon's neurodivergence: unfinished projects!!For example:
-He felt like making a lair in one place only to abandon it and start somewhere else. He may have done this dozens of times. Adventurers now explore one of these partially built lairs, rummaging through its random hoard items. Until he comes back to find that one thing he forgot there...
-A local settlement of [humanoids] became vulnerable to attack when the Mercury dragon left and was no longer around to keep down the population of [monsters].
-Centuries ago he started collecting all of the different kinds of [magic item] and tells the adventurers trespassing in his lair that he may let them keep the one they have if they can find him another within 1d10 days.
-A faculty of wizards has developed around trying to figure out the many uncompleted magic items this dragon has begun to make, and decipher the journals written in his sloppy draconic scrawl. They hire adventurers to find him and ask for clarification. However, for the last 700 years, he hasn't had the energy for social interaction and has gotten lethally irritable whenever his solitude is invaded...

One of my all time favorite undead is the Famine spirit found in the 3rd edition's Monster manual II. Ghoul concept to the extreme, it is easy to build lore on that creature. This malevolent creature is coming from the last survivor on a desert island from a noble vessel shipwreck. Becaused of the lack of food in the area, cannibalism was an issue to survive until there were only one. Later in his death from starvation that maddening survivor becamed cursed and rised as a ghoul. The monster leaved the area and now swim forever to hunt for more shipcrew to consume. His body became gross, bloated with water to an impressive size. His maw is calling for more humanoïd flesh, getting wider after each meal.

Mercury Dragons have been my favorite since I learned about them. I think the only thing I remember that wasn't mentioned was that they were (in 2nd edition), the smallest true dragons. This also made them the most aggressive when it came to territoriality - specifically with regards to other dragons. They were willing to hunt down other dragons and literally fight them in their own lairs. It's the extension of Small Dog syndrome, but it's Small Dragon syndrome.

Inventing differnt dragons is always one of the funnier things to do as a DM. For Metallic Dragons you can easily just pick out an element on the periodic table, IE: Lead, Tungstun, Titanium, etc. Chromatic Dragons is literally just picking a color, IE: Turquoise, Maroon, even something random like Lilac, etc. And even gems are just random stones. IE: Opal, Amber, Jet. ETC.

I just realized what it is about this channel that seized me so.
It used to be, you could wander around online and randomly find lovingly curated lists of creatures from games - say, dragons from D&D - that you couldn't find any other way.
And reading through them, you could fall in love with monsters you'd never have known about otherwise. Say, a dragon type your ADHD self would immediately associate with, that wouldn't see a reprint in the current edition for years to come, if at all.
Most of those sites are long-forgotten or gone now. But that's what this series does in video form.
    Small wonder it's so enjoyable.

I made a homebrew Mercury Dragon for a campaign a while back. They were sort of a half-magical half-genetic offshoot of Silver Dragons, with about 1 in 1000 silver dragon eggs carrying the mercurial trait. Personality wise, they start off normal but slowly become more chaotic, unpredictable and insane overtime
Their breath weapon was poison since mercury is toxic and there was no poison metallic dragon. Their other breath weapon was a maddening breath that left the victim charmed to the Mercury dragon and their crazy commands

Very happy to see a revitalization of missing true dragons that I WISH WotC would officialy include in a mighty fat "Fizbans Draconomicon" and/ or add lesser known dragons in the next 5e editions Starter kits and minis. Highest wishes is that they retcon the 2e yellow sand dragon as beige dragon, having the yellow being coastal salt spewer WITH wings akin to a copper dragons. And Purple dragons being a mix of 4e and Lloyds dragon magazine #65. Brown dragons, being the replacer of 2e sand dragons Imho do have wings but adapted to " swim " in the sand and burrowing
