Today on Bonus Damage I’ll be giving my thoughts on the trailer for the Borderlands movie. As a long time fan of the looter shooter Borderlands games from gearbox I have many thoughts on this movie and how it’s adapting the games.

So they hired someone in their fifties... to play lillith?
Older no nonsense girl boss, with a whiny incompetent man for comic relief. Where have we seen this before?
Might have been good casting 20 years ago.
@@d6damage93 true.
what an odd movie casting. are they gonna say sike?
It does feel like a prank.
If they did, it would be the most epic troll of all time.
Absolute madness casting choices wtf
I didn't even realize this was a thing.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. lol
The big monster is supposed to be a giant thresher according to Pitchford... and he also confirmed that was not Mouthpiece
I vote for steve buschemi for mordecai. Always felt right.
They could have used Pink Floyd's Money for the Trailer would have fit the Vault Hunter theme
They absolutely just said "we want a new Guardians of the Galaxy" so they used old 70's music.
No rest for the wicked would have been my pick.
@@michaeldougherty6036Jack Black and Cate Blanchett are both early-middle Gen-Xers, so they probably grew up hearing that song on the radio a lot. Boomers created some of the best music, and we Gen-Xers are grateful for it. But yeah. When you put it in a movie, it has to fit thematically-go-nuts.
My biggest gripe with this trailor is actually Tiny Tina. Not so much the look, seems fine. It's the performance/writing. It's just not coming across as Tiny Tina.
I am (was) a huge borderlands fan since 1, and this is just.... A movie with 6 big name actors and a bargain bin 'power of family!' plot????. Borderlands 3 tanked the series for me personally but damn.....talk about wasting the chance at making a movie...
I have similar feelings about BL3 and this movie definitely doesn't seem to be helping the brand.
The world looks cool and Claptrap is spot on excluding the voice, it's not a movie to take too seriously can't be as bad as most games to movie's
2:26 Why does Krieg wear a left-handed gas mask if he shoots right-handed? See also The Pyro from TF2.
3:05 Dandy Bitchford said that "it's not Borderlands 1" and "it's not Borderlands 2." Basically, it's its own thing. That could be fine if done right, but what that really means is they cherry-picked random ideas from all the games. See also the first Silent Hill movie.
3:20 In other words, it's a glorified fanfic.
3:26 They did a good enough job of making that rocket launcher's barrel look Torgue-like. Too bad it has no sight.
4:16 Not disagreeing, but it's also true that everyone forgets that Roland wasn't stoic in BL1. He was more lighthearted. Not in the same style as Kevin Hart. He still had charisma and leadership abilities. He only became stoic out of necessity between 1 and 2. Why'd they give him a beret, and why does he wear black and gray? He should be wearing BDU pants with a camo pattern that resembles early '90s Desert Storm-era US-issue camo BDUs. That details remains consistent with every iteration of Roland in the games. And he didn't wear a beret in BL1. He wore a grenadier's cap. A beret is part of military formal dress attire, not an on-duty uniform. Wearing a beret in combat marks the wearer as a priority target. US standard for how to wear a beret is with the insignia over the wearer's left eye, draped material over the right ear. Roland wears his the exact opposite way in BL2, but different countries in our timeline have different standards for that. Don't know what Jill Valentine's excuse is for wearing her beret wrongly.
5:00 That actor looks perfect for the part, but why'd they go with his BL3-era duds and white streaks in his hair? It looks cool, but it's yet another detail that makes the story era feel confusing. Like having 30-something Roland and teenage Tina coexisting in the same timeline.
5:23 She's exactly twice the age (54) that Lilith was in BL1 (27).
6:45 It might be a revamped Rakk Hive.
7:03 Borderlands came out before Avatar, so if anything, it should be the other way around. Then again, I don't think metalhead Jack Black would complain if they changed the planet's name to "Pantera." Ben Stiller already made a "Pantera's box" joke in 'Mystery Men' (1999).
Note: "Promethea" is the feminine form of "Prometheus," so maybe "Pandorus" could be the masculine form of "Pandora."
9:00 Notice the TCB belt buckle. That's OG BL! Brick must be an Elvis Presley fan. They changed his belt buckle insignia to a Vault symbol in "Enhanced."
9:04 It makes sense not to have Jack as the villain just yet. I kinda like that Atlas is the Big Bad, plus they've finally given a name and an identity to Atlas's CEO, Deukalian Atlas, whose name is most likely a reference to Deucalion, son of Prometheus, of Greek mythology.
Honestly I think the booster scene with the monster MAY have been a Rakk Hive?? Like it would make NO sense for it to be Cramerax, or the Destroyer.
I could see it as a Rakk Hive. It doesn't look like a Rakk Hive, but it would make more sense. I was just thinking worst case scenario.
@@d6damage93 I'm with ya, but it's very evident for better or worse they took certain creative "liberties".
Can Kevin carry this movie?
The Rock as Brick?
Kevin only plays Kevin. And from the trailer, that's all that is happening here. Honestly, The Rock would have been a better fit for Roland.
The fact that there was no narration from Markus and the character splash cards are similarly missing make me feel that nobody on the writing or direction team actually played the game. Looks like one of those movies you could watch for free and still get ripped off.
Kevin hart... as roland? That is sooooooooo wrong.
Right, Roland is a more serious character in the game, Kevin Hart is a "funny man" kind of actor.
Borderlands(the first) was amazing. Two was okay, and they kind of lost steam from there. Just my experience.
GRANDMA LILITH GRANDMA LILITH UGH!!!!!!
They lost me right from the casting and then the lack of the original line up. If anything keep
Claptraps’ voice actor from the game. Screenwriters love to ignore the source material. Its just going to be such a letdown.
I saw the trailer, but didn't watch it. It felt more like a cash grab, but I could be wrong.
If you look closely, Lilith does have have siren powers, though where it is in the storyline it's hard to tell. I'm looking forward to fun, irreverent slapstick shooting time tbh.
I spotted the teleportation power from BL2 used when I rewatched the trailer. You have a good eye.
For me I hate Grandma Lilith the most, and that they removed the Strong white males Brick and Mordecai with Tannis and Tina being made more important.
Krieg and Tina are the only ones cast remotely right. JB is a talented actor, I guess that's something you're supposed to say, but his vocal tones and range is all wrong for Clappy. He should have been Marcus, or Salvador. Fire everyone else. Start over. But it won't happen, bc this is just a cash grab.
Yeah, he would fit well for Marcus or Salvador.
The whole project just stinks of the cynical hollywood machine. Terrible casting choices, picked for name recognition alone. I got nothing against Jack Black, but David Eddings' Claptrap is goddamn iconic. And I guarentee he would have been cheaper, and better at the part.
Lazy, CG-riffic art style that poorly represents the source material. Seriously here, Borderlands set itself apart from a SEA of copy-paste shooters out there with it's crazy cell-shaded art style and design. Neither of which is very well represented in the film. It looks like a generic Guardians of the Galaxy rip-off. Why not do something nuts, like a hybrid cell-shaded, live-action film? I've seen cosplayers that can pull off the look better than this film, just using markers.
I could go on, but it's just screaming into the void. The movie will blow, and the studio will blame gamers for being too picky for its failure; not their own lazy cynicism.
You would think they'd at least be more open to the idea of animation considering Edgerunner did so well for Netflix.
The film is disappointing from the trailer, I have know intention going see it
The seem about 20 years older than the game characters but good actors so hopefully it'll be good.
It's a good cast to be sure, but it seems like there was either a lot of meddling by the studio or the director didn't do enough to get familiar with the source material.
