  • Testing in-store at 'the Classic Store' Leica Camera, Wetzlar Germany. Liam Arning of the store was kind enough to let me take his portrait. While never created as a portrait lens in mind, I decided to see what the compression of the 1600mm focal length would do to his face when taking a portrait - watch the video and see. disclaimer: this was not meant to be a promotional video nor anything serious. Just something fun to try the lens out on the new Leica SL3. It was quite sharp at the closest focusing distance I shot at, however it's performance was optimised for longer distance shooting, so don't look too much into the quality - just the compression of the very simple image.
    BACKGROUND ON THE LENS:
    In 2006, Leica Camera AG unveiled a groundbreaking creation: the Apo-Telyt-R 1600 mm f/5.6 lens, a true marvel of engineering. This extraordinary lens, weighing in at a staggering 60 kg and boasting dimensions of 1.2 meters in length (expanding to 1.55 meters with the lens hood attached) and a barrel diameter of 42 cm, redefined the limits of telephoto capabilities.
    The genesis of this colossal telephoto lens traces back to a unique request from Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Thani, the former Minister of Culture of Qatar. His vision for an exceptionally large and heavy lens pushed the boundaries of traditional optics, resulting in a piece that stands out not only for its technical prowess but also for its sheer size and weight. While its practicality may seem daunting, its creation marks a testament to Leica's dedication to innovation and the pursuit of excellence in optical design.

    Standard Leica things, spend way too much money to then take boring shots.

      @@fazehiro7490 no, a heavily compressed 4k youtube video does not at all show the benefits of the world's most expensive lens and instead makes it look almost identical to a phone

    I would bet that the lensing on the JWST was far more expensive than this.

    Works for remote studio, they will ask you to pose on your window and they will point their telescopic lens and take a picture for you remotely, and then send it by email to you.

  • @MacM545
    @MacM545 Před 2 měsíci +2

    Wouldn’t it be better to simply use a telescope? They don’t have great Autofocus and no stabilization, but a telescope is more financially practical. And within approximately $5,000, you could likely get the same specifications!

    Well....back in film times you could make tons of such portraits even with the simplest SLR wtih a 50mm or 85mm or so lens...for fraction of the price on a great film

  • @dzulk9
    @dzulk9 Před 2 měsíci +3

    I mean.... The portrait could be better? Shot at outdoor with far background perhaps?
    I mean it only shows the sharpness and the compression of 1600mm which is good.... But doesn't make the portrait outstanding.

    Try using the Minolta MC ROKKOR PF 85mm f1.7 MF Portrait Lens the boka gives the Portraits a wonderful here's your center of attention effect. You won't have to Splurge 2millie for it and the lens is a lot less cumbersome to carry around for portraits.

    Honestly its cool but whats the point in all of this? Who is gonna buy a lens in the Consumer Market to use this??? I understand if they created it as a Prototype but I think its a waste of money tbh cause we have lenses that create the same quality Images at 0.1% of the Price LOL

    • @MacM545
      @MacM545 Před 2 měsíci

      Maybe if it could resolve hundreds and hundreds of megapixels, but even so, a high end telescope may be more financially practical . I’m an amateur photographer who has a great interest in astronomy and for that price you could get a telescope that could do likely more. For example, a $5000 telescope can likely get you beyond the 1600mm focal length.

    • @DD23-1
      @DD23-1 Před 2 měsíci +1

      @@MacM545 I agree. Im an Amature Photographer myself also for the past 2 decades since my teens but tbh this here is just a waste. If they built it to just show People what they can build and their abilities than ok but if this is for the consumer market, yeah Ok... Good luck with that.
