5 YEARS 1 CAMERA | Leica SL
Thank you for joining me on this journey. I’m often asked why I’ve kept the same camera for 5 years and I’m happy to answer it here in this story. This video was not made in conjunction with any brands, but features brands that I use and support.
All images were shot using the original Leica SL from 2015, and have very little post-processing to provide a clear and accurate representation of the natural settings I work in. All images shot in manual exposure, including ISO.

MASTERING LOW LIGHT Workshop by Kristian Dowling

Here's a quick look behind the scenes of the MASTERING LOW LIGHT workshop from Melbourne, Australia. Being a photographer often means having to adapt to difficult situations and surroundings when capturing an image. Especially in low light situations, the technique behind capturing a natural looking image is an added level of difficulty. The challenges faced in low light are now assisted by the...
Leica M (type 240) M240 camera behind the scenes at Fashion Week

Full review here: kristiandowling.com/blog/2013/5/3/leica-m-typ240-user-review During Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia 2013, I took the new Leica M (type240) for a test drive, using the Leica Summarit 50/2.5 and Voigtländer Nokton 35/1.2 II lenses. All pictures were shot using natural light, and sometimes lit using the Ice Light and Nikon SB-910 speedlight on the SC-29 cable. Files were cap...
Not to diss this lens. But even my iPhone 7 could produce exactly this result SOOC without any editing. This was a bit disappointing.
This photo is a letdown.
Thanks for the video, i also removed the plug on a the sl system,
Thanks for the feedback.Could you please clarify what you mean?
Well....back in film times you could make tons of such portraits even with the simplest SLR wtih a 50mm or 85mm or so lens...for fraction of the price on a great film
Works for remote studio, they will ask you to pose on your window and they will point their telescopic lens and take a picture for you remotely, and then send it by email to you.
Очень хорошая диафрагма для такого фокусного расстояния.
BAHAHAHAHAHA
$2 million scam
Makes everyone appear to have the downs
cool a area51 lens
That pic looks fabulous on my $850 phone screen!
you mean smartphone
Homie, this aint it.
No way that weights 132lbs the way those 2 guys picked that up.
Pic Quality seems like iPhone 5
loool
Bought one yesterday! It's ok...
Try using the Minolta MC ROKKOR PF 85mm f1.7 MF Portrait Lens the boka gives the Portraits a wonderful here's your center of attention effect. You won't have to Splurge 2millie for it and the lens is a lot less cumbersome to carry around for portraits.
S24 Ultra takes better pic😂😂😂
Was this a May's Fools Joke?
now you can prove that Orange is flat.
I hope they captured the recent Eclipse with this.
2 mil lens for a portrait that looks like it was taken with a iPhone 8
I would bet that the lensing on the JWST was far more expensive than this.
"Check out this lens!" *posts close up picture of some guy's face and uploads it via a heavily compressed short video* 🤡
Is 4k not enough resolution for u?
@@fazehiro7490 no, a heavily compressed 4k youtube video does not at all show the benefits of the world's most expensive lens and instead makes it look almost identical to a phone
Not clear how the footage of this lens is superior looking at it on a screen!
In 2mil i thought that Photo will be edited inside the lens .. Lamo
Lol this is trash
Standard Leica things, spend way too much money to then take boring shots.
Wouldn’t it be better to simply use a telescope? They don’t have great Autofocus and no stabilization, but a telescope is more financially practical. And within approximately $5,000, you could likely get the same specifications!
Money doesn't matter to them.
I mean.... The portrait could be better? Shot at outdoor with far background perhaps? I mean it only shows the sharpness and the compression of 1600mm which is good.... But doesn't make the portrait outstanding.
I mean you are on point.
Maybe get a bird or... something?
Honestly its cool but whats the point in all of this? Who is gonna buy a lens in the Consumer Market to use this??? I understand if they created it as a Prototype but I think its a waste of money tbh cause we have lenses that create the same quality Images at 0.1% of the Price LOL
Maybe if it could resolve hundreds and hundreds of megapixels, but even so, a high end telescope may be more financially practical . I’m an amateur photographer who has a great interest in astronomy and for that price you could get a telescope that could do likely more. For example, a $5000 telescope can likely get you beyond the 1600mm focal length.
@@MacM545 I agree. Im an Amature Photographer myself also for the past 2 decades since my teens but tbh this here is just a waste. If they built it to just show People what they can build and their abilities than ok but if this is for the consumer market, yeah Ok... Good luck with that.
All that to produce an image that any new iPhone can reproduce.
Wow! What a (prototype) lens. Amazing that Sheikh Saud Bin Mohammed Al-Thani even had a special 4x4 vehicle constructed for using that lens.
No offense but that portrait isnt a great demo of the 2 mil lens
Truth! The most underwhelming image they could have taken.
Was thinking the SAME thing
.//. Results are very disappointing if that is the final shot.//.
Looks like Sigma got a bro
Cost?
2 million dollars
brother why on earth does she have her foot in a toilet
Interestingly, it was a translation issue, so I just went with it lol
This is gold
Like my Nikon D700 the Leica SL is a camera which I definitely wouldn't part with.
Five years and one camera, you enviable guy, my quota is five cameras in one year, greetings from GAS 🤣🤣🤣
Haha it's certainly not hard to get that mixed up ;-)
Couldn't agree more - I learnt a lot from the low light workshop you conducted in Kuala Lumpur 9 years ago, and am looking forward to the next one with you this Friday!
Just pulled the trigger on my first Leica, in part thanks to your inspiring shots. Thanks for the video + review!
Oh thank you, that's great to hear. Nice channel, and just subbed. Hope the camera is going well
Please do a video on the SL2-S
Hi, well interestingly, I have now moved on to the SL3 now from the SL3-S, so stay tuned for a video in the coming months
This camera is an ergonomic nightmare and the operator looks like Stevie Wonder playing Vivaldi's “Summer” on the harpsichord. Great to be used as a basic analogue camera if you are careful not to touch any of the buttons.
the images are very inspiring. I came from reading your review on the website , i have a question, you took the camera to enjoy the water festival -- does it have any problem with water splashing ? that kinda scarred me hehe
this images are magnificent. Can I see more of your work ? on a website maybe ?
Epic work man!
Thanks for this very inspiring video. After a simple but very rewarding pro-photo career that started in 1977 I'm now legally retired, not having to meet deadlines other than set by myself and focus primarily on Landscape work. easy to do as I live next to a National park that is happy to sell my photos (Warrumbungle N.P. in NSW Australia. Currently I shoot Fuji. It is a simple analogue system and delivers great quality. I abandoned Leica about 40 years ago in favour of Nikon. But somehow the 'Leica quality' never ever left my DNA. One photo in particular is still in my mind and maybe in my archive : a photo of a small fishing boat in Greece hovering 'in space' on the mirror of the sea. It was taken with my M4-2 and a 35mm , it had that mysterious look that only Leica can create. Sharp and dreamy at the same time. And when I recently was confronted with Leitz glass .... I was hooked and started researching Leica. I had really really abondoned it , never looked back , made very good money with Nikon but man .... when I had that Leitz glass result back out of my Fuji I tought for a momnet : why oh why did I leave Leica ( I know why ... in the early 80's it was just not a practical system for a very busy wedding , function , portrait and anything else photographer. Film change was a bit slow , flash synch totally hopeless, focus accuracy a serious pain , when it worked ( my M4's ) itw as magic but when it failed ..... SO I started reseaching Leica , learned only a few days ago about a certain Leica SL " wah's tha' ?? " And rapidly became more than intrigued. And as they say the rest is history : Thanks to the SL I found your videos and your amazing work and your great way of explaining things. You have an easy going charm in detailing a complicated subject very ... friendly and inspiring. Thanks so much - and who know maybe one day we cross roads and talk Leica over a good cuppa !
Hi Jacob, I apologise for not seeing your comment a year ago, but wow, thank you for sharing your story, well part of a much larger one I am sure. The Fuji system is really nice, and these days it looks very much like a gateway into Leica. The picture in Greece sounds delightful. I always say, a camera or a lens is only as good as the pictures we take with it, so that's where the Leica connection truly shines. Anyway I hope yuo're doing well, and hope to cross paths someday when I'm doing events in Sydney with Leia=ca. All the best, kD.
Thanks so much for creating this very clear and easy to understand tutorial. It is really helpful for me to make up my almost 70 year old mind to return to Leica after abandoning it ... 40 years ago. One of my fears was the menu - you tought me I have nothing to be afraid about 🙂
