I use the M1 MacBook Air for checking emails. I know it's boring but it replaced my 2012 MacBook pro. Even though there is a new M3 MacBook air, there is not much of a difference to the M1 MacBook air. The laptop does slow down sometimes but I accept it because it has 8 GB of ram. So I'm thinking the next time I upgrade I'll probably get the MacBook pro because it has more ram at the base model, better screen.

The M1 MacBook Air was my first ever MacBook as I had only ever had an iMac up until then.I kept it for over a year and it was a great machine but I sold it for the M2 when it came out.No regrets as I am a fan of the new flat design Air.

I used a base model M1 MacBook Air for 6 months, while I waited for the 16in M1 MBPro to come out. Within a week I had returned the 16in MBP (too big, too heavy) and went back to the M1 Air, which remains the best £ for £ laptop I ever have ever had.

I did a Masters degree in 8 months on an M1 MacBook Air. I found its limit multiple times as a base model with 8GB of unified memory with all of the reference material and tabs I’d need open to complete assignments, but I went in understanding I may face limitations. The interesting thing is now I live with my gaming PC again and I’m going back to the M1 MacBook Air for daily driving because I don’t need more than that in terms of raw compute, but I have adopted the Apple ecosystem over the years and appreciate the value that comes with that (iPhone, iPad Pro 2018, M1 MacBook Air).

I have a 13" M1 Pro nicely speced by work 16/512GB. I have no emotional attachment as I have had with some previous Macs. It just works and has never let me down. I pop it on a stand in clamshell mode at work and get to work.

Love my M1 MacBook Air. I have the upgraded 16 gig 1 tb configuration but this thing has been a powerhouse both for my own youtube channel and for personal video projects, as well as general school tasks. Battery life has always been pretty solid, sometimes when under extreme load it chokes a bit but it's never let me down. Currently I have Apple Pages, Notes, reminders, spotify, and 19 chrome tabs open, and the computer is sitting at a comfortable 38 degrees celcius (CPU temp) and it barely feels warm. Was kind of sad when it disappeared from the Apple website and no one was talking about it, this video was made for me! Thanks for making it, you have a new sub :)

I bought a M1 Air at the beginning of 2021 and after about 6 mths I sold it cause I was hardly using it. I have regretted that decision ever since. We ended up getting a M1 Mac mini for our local church and we absolutely love it. Outside of it possibly needing more storage, it’s perfect for what we use it for.

I feel the exact same way, actually. When I found out about this yesterday, there was definitely a sense of melancholy that accompanied my excitement of tech moving forward. I just upgraded to an M3 Pro Macbook Pro back in November, but before that I, like you, had owned an M1 Air since it launched. I absolutely loved that machine. As you've said, and we've all come to know, it was just incredibly capable for what it was. It was the computer that got me through college. I worked on many papers and projects on it. I took it to classes and to meetings with my classmates to prep for a presentation. I did everything with it and it never let me down. I had complete confidence in its abilities. After graduating and getting a new job, the demands of my job necessitated me getting a more powerful machine. So now I have the M3 Pro Macbook Pro, which I absolutely adore, but I still miss that M1. It was special.

THANK YOU for this video, Mark! I got here after seeing your M3 video review. Watching this video brings me all the way back to 2021 when I was researching on getting an M1 Mac, and how I initially got the 8GB version before returning it (it had construction faults on its borders, and oil seeped into the layer beneath the screen) and then getting a slightly-bumped version (16GB, 512GB) a week.
So much time has passed indeed, and how quickly, too! Watching you reminisce of your journey with the M1 Mac and what it meant to you really brought me back to all those years ago, when I also first discovered you and your channel. I agree with you on the "thinking carefully" about getting the M3 Mac if one were to be an M1 / M2 Mac owner: I believe that for my use case, 16/512 is more than adequate, and should be for a long time to come.
Keep up the excellent work, and wishing you and family continued good health and success!
    Much love from Singapore. 😃

Your original videos really got me hyped for the M1 MBA, and I got one pretty much as soon as I could. As we needed it for an iOS app project, I could not wait to order the 16GB version so had to settle for 8GB in-store. At first, I did not want to like it, as I had a trusty HP thin and light, but I was blown away... 2 things that really stood out for me: the battery life (no more range anxiety!) and the sound quality, I never thought a small laptop could sound this loud and clear...
Sadly, the 8GB was just not enough for some of the heavy workload I have (Xcode, Android Studio, Photoshop, etc), and it's now just a glorified build server... But I really wanna do it *right* with another MBA in the future...

On the recommendation of your video and others like it, I bought one for my daughter in 2021 (she's in high school and going to university in the autumn). Of course, she didn't necessarily need it, but by then she had one smaller HP laptop that didn't justify anything apart from the name and was a nightmare of a computer. With the Macbook air M1 computer, I saved the purchase of two PCs with one computer. The user experience is top-notch, there is no technical maintenance and no complaining that something doesn't work, doesn't go and so on. Thank you and good luck.

    8 gig of memory.
I have an M1 Mini with 8 gig on board. I do very very intensive drawings with thousands of nested and interlinked files. Some master drawings are 20 by 30 METRES in size. One day while editing using Affinity Designer and Publisher the software gave me a warning that it had maxed out its allocated memory at 40 gig! The mac had synthesised an extra 32 gig of ram.
Note: the computer hadn’t run out of memory. The software had.
I have no issues running Resolve on it. Have added a thunderbolt port expander on it - so there are 4 Thunderbolt ports where there had been only 2. With the right NVME memory connected you can get storage almost as fast as internal memory. Keep your hard drive as empty as possible cos this tech loves those acres to run wild in.

🙌 one of the best upgrade choices I’ve ever made was to pick up an M1 Air in early 2021. I felt real confident the wedge design days were numbered and knew it was a good moment to be an early adopter. I know I bought this Air because I missed the comfort my wrists felt typing on the old 11” Air after upgrading to a Pro.
Imagine my absolute delight when, despite hearing all the reviews and hype, the wee beastie absolutely delivered beyond all my expectations. I bought one thinking I would probably feel the usual FOMO after a couple years, but it still feels new. When I do finally upgrade, I don’t think I’ll ever give it away or sell it. Especially if they don’t bring back the wedge. It’s just a great machine that feels ultra reliable all the time.
I do low-key miss the 11” form factor and was desperately hoping that the M1 would give Apple an excuse to revive the little guy. It was such a lovely machine to take to classes, especially when you’re already loaded up with giant textbooks.

Still have mine (gold, 8-core, 16gb, 512 gb) and it meets my needs. But for me, it is beyond just meeting needs (though failing to do so would be a problem). It has great style and presence. I use it for work every day, and it makes my work feel a little more elevated, a little more elegant. It is silent and serene, and somehow, in so being, it makes me calmer and more focused. So I offer this little thanks to this machine, for what it has done for me and what I think it is yet, for some time to come, to do!

So much so that when I decided I really needed a bigger screen and bought an M3 15-inch, instead of trading the M1 to save $500, I've kept it. I doubt I'll part with it. This thing coped with everything I threw at it, and the only reason I wanted to replace it was that I need a bigger screen. An eye-opening introduction to Apple Silicon after my 2018 Intel MBP!

  • @brunocracco2949

Thank you for that tribute to the M1 BacBook Air. The M1 MBA is very important to me as it was my first ever Mac after almost 40 years of being a PC only guy. It makes me consider MacBooks as serious machines for computing intensive tasks (numerical simulation). For my use case, I maxed it out with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. But think about it: this fanless entry level Macbook was smoking every PC laptop available in 2020, and even lots of desktops, in a complete silence, for hours, on battery power... amazing! I still own and use PCs (laptops and desktop), but I also have and enjoy MacBooks now. I'm writing this comment on a MBP 16 M3 Max that came after all the Max lineup (M1 Max, M2 Max and now M3 Max successively thanks to a great resell value), but I keep the MBA M1 as it's incredibly capable for almost every tasks in such a small form factor. I will keep it forever I think. It was the starting point of a new era in laptop computing that lead us today, where finally Intel and AMD have waken up to try to catchup Apple Silicon.

I mostly use it for journaling and other writing tasks, also use it for video editing, etc. Simply put, it’s the best laptop I’ve ever had. Apple raised the bar so high with this one! As a general rule, and from experience, if you're planning to buy any RAM based macbook, don't settle for anything with 8 GB RAM. Mac OS itself takes more than 5 GB and this is the biggest reason why the performance will be a bottleneck.....

    • @johnconniffe5234
      @johnconniffe5234 Před 2 měsíci

8GB is still generally OK if you're mainly doing doing webbrowsing, office, email, streaming etc. As a serious work machine, no, but as a secondary travel machine, 8Gb is still fine. Obviously no serious photoshop, video, multitrack audio etc.. but for travelling or slowing on the sofa, snapping up an 8Gb machine at a reasonable price is still a very good buy. (to be honest, snapping up an 8GB 2015 MBA at a very low price is also a good buy, for the same reason). The reality is that a lot of people don't really need the specs "prosumers" need. I wouldn't get anything under 16Gb ( or preferably 32Gb) Mac as a work machine, but most people don't do the type of work I do. There's a certain amount of Apple machine users who are the equivalent of Ferrari owners who never go above 70 mph. And they really don't need more than 8Gb.

    • @deutschehassan7296
      @deutschehassan7296 Před 2 měsíci

I agree with you, but only if you use the 8 GB machine for a short term; that's within 3 years time. More than that, the device will be slow no matter what the processor chip inside is. @@johnconniffe5234

I have a gold M1 MacBook Air, which replaced my 2012 MacBook Pro. I use it daily and my main use is writing and research; I do hobby video editing and occasionally it has to sub in as work computer, but that's rare. I specced it up when I got it (1 TB storage, 16 GB memory), because I knew I would keep it at least as long as I had the old MBP, and I figured that would last me a long time. I still love it! The only problem I've ever had with it is running Safari with any other app open makes it heat up, but I switched my main browser to Firefox, so that fixes that. I wish it had the Magsafe power cord, but that's my only complaint. I will look covetously at the new models, but I plan to use it for a good long time!

I liked the M1 so much that I picked up a refurbed M1 Mac Mini and I haven't seriously thought about upgrading. When I do, the only thing I'll add is 16 Gigs of RAM. Eight is servicable but 16, for my use case would be perfect.

I had a m1 MacBook Air and recently upgraded during the winter holiday season to the m3 max MacBook pro. The M1 air was a great computer, however over time I started to notice it would slow down with certain workloads (especially keeping open many tabs on browsers or other apps) , it did really well for 8 gb ram but when you work with a lot of different things all at once then app or browser window management is a very big thing. However, with my new MacBook Pro with 36GB ram and fantastic m3 Max there hasn't been anything I've thrown at it yet that will seriously slow it down.

New M1s may be seeing their final days, but three years' worth of old M1s will be chugging away for years to come. Before long we may even be seeing used M1s readily available for $400 all day long. That would be quite a deal.

I am still debating whether to get the air or pro. Does the heat on the air ever slow your performance down while you were editing? I just want an all around mac. I had a 2013 macbook pro and it is ancient yet it still performs hence my love for mac.

I have had my M1 MBA since they were first released. My wife still has her Intel MacBook Air and says we will have to pry it from her cold, dead fingers. I love my M1 machine and like everyone else, it has performed magnificently for everything I throw at it. My only complaint is that occasionally I seem to run out of memory if I leave too many applications only Next time I will definitely pay for the additional memory!

My wife's Intel MacBook Air was struggling and I said she needed an upgrade. This was earlier this year, but funds were not available to go for the latest model from Apple. But Amazon (and others) was selling new 2020 M1 MacBook Airs, so that's what I got for her. She's delighted with it, as all she uses it for is writing her blog, so no heavy duty stuff, but unlike the Intel model it opens instantly and just works. See Amazon are still selling new ones for £826. PS it was your video that got me to buy a iPhone 13 mini and I love it. Such a shame Apple dropped it from their line up!

I did get the MacBook Air M1 chip when it was released, and the main reason I got it is because I could now run iPad apps that were available to run on the M1 chip. And I still have them as my only Mac laptop and I haven’t bought anything else. No need anything else since then. Frank.

The M1 was and is such a powerful and flexible laptop it's pretty much perfect for most users. Whilst the M2 and M3 are natural successors to the M1 the motivation for change is minimal for me. I have 2 M1 Airs and they are so good I wont be changing until they fail

I bought the M1 (base) on Monday before they annouced the M3 in case they didn't drop the price, but here in Aus after the M3, it was only $90 more for the M2 so I've swapped to the M2. While I know the SSD drive is slower, for $90 a 2-year newer machine, new design etc. Seemed a better buy to me.

I’ve written five novels on the M1 Air since its arrival. It’s a fabulous multi- media laptop, which I still use today, despite having more modern and better equipped Macs. It’s paid for itself so many times over. I shall miss it when it gives up the ghost.

I originally purchased the M1 Mac Mini, which served me well until I became more limited in being able to sit at a desk (disability). Traded it back to Apple for a good price, and later purchased an iPad 10th gen with high storage, weird I know 😂.
Last fall I actually purchased the M1 MacBook Air on sale at Best Buy for $745.
I’m permanently disabled now, so completely out of the workforce. Financially I can afford the M3 upgrade, especially with Apple Trade-in offer, but other than longer durability of a newer model, can’t really justify the upgrade.

All else aside, it’s the end of a nostalgic era of consumer tech. The wedge shaped Air practically invented the ultrabook category. The M1 was a modernised version compared to the aluminium bezel models from before 2018, but it still had that 2010’s feel to it. We’re officially saying goodbye to that era. It’s always sad to see a design language go for good.

Man, i gave my macbook air m1 and i am still regretting it. It was the first apple laptop that i bought, the craftmanship, chassis quality, responsiveness, speaker quality amazed me. The OS needs some tweaks and refinements as i am used to windows, mac and linux. Every os has the negatives and positives but the quality of the macbook air was top notch. i am hoping to be able to buy a macbook in the near future again.

I just got the base model M1 MacBook Air late last week. A local Apple reseller (we don't have physical Apple Stores in PH) reduced the price for these, and I took the bait. I don't have a sophisticated use case for it, so I am confident that this will be my daily driver for years to come. P.S. I'm really loving Continuity and Sidecar with my M1 iPad Air, it just works!

I have always been a desktop PC user, and always felt that PC laptops/notebooks were compromised in one respect or another. The M1 MBA changed all that for me in 2020. More than 3 years on and a lot of heavy usage later, I consider it to be one of the greatest computers of all time. It's never let me down, and has travelled all over the world with me. I will use it until it's no longer working, or Apple chose to obsolete it with an OS upgrade at some point.
