  • He has been giving seminars and trainings since 2002 and wrote several books about it: breathing. Or, in other words: closing your mouth. In this episode, we welcome international practitioner, author and breathing expert Patrick McKeown to our studio!
Ever since Patrick was a child he struggled with asthma. Due to the lack of adequate sleep he couldn’t focus or concentrate and was not able to reach his full potential as a teenager. It all changed when he discovered a technique that helped him breathe differently.
Patrick speaks about his mission to empower people to take back control of their lives, simply by using his breathing techniques that have proven to improve body oxygenation.
The exercise seems simple: just breath through your nose. But are you still capable of keeping your mouth closed during an intense workout? How does this technique affects our training? And what impact does it have on child development?
Curious to know everything about the optimization of your everyday breathing? You will find it here!
    We cover the following topics:
-Is it hard to correct methods that have been thought for years?
    -How should we be breathing?
-And what about during working out?
-How should we start our day?
-Wim Hoff technique vs Oxygen Advantage
-Is the Wim Hoff technique beneficial?
-Hyperventilation and a higher breath hold
    -Example of bad breathing
-What happens when you breathe through your nose during physical exercise?
    -What is meant by ventilation?
-Why is my body making me ventilate more when I’m pushing my body?
-Reaching the lower regions of your lungs by breathing through your nose
    -Breathing exercise
    -Stress then vs now
-How to train your children to deal with stress
-Mouth taping for kids - breathing through the mouth vs through the nose
-Do you think we lost the right way of breathing along the way?
    -Breastfeeding
    -The food we are eating
-What about breathing out through your mouth?
    -What is VO2 max?
-The importance of sleep and recovery

Below is a detailed essay that delves into the main topics discussed in the podcast featuring Patrick McKeown, an expert on breathing techniques.
    ### Introduction
Breathing is an involuntary action that sustains life, yet most people rarely consider the quality of their breathing. Patrick McKeown, a leading authority on breathing and its impact on health, challenges conventional wisdom on this subject. In a podcast, he discusses various aspects of breathing, sleep, attention span, and overall well-being. This essay aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of these topics based on McKeown's insights.
    ---
    ### The Importance of Nose Breathing
One of the most striking points McKeown makes is the significance of nose breathing over mouth breathing. He argues that nose breathing is not just about getting air into the lungs; it's about doing so in a way that maximizes energy and overall health. According to McKeown, nose breathing filters and humidifies the air, which is beneficial for lung function. It also helps in regulating the volume of air intake, ensuring that it aligns with the body's actual oxygen needs. Mouth breathing, on the other hand, can lead to over-breathing, which paradoxically reduces the amount of oxygen that is delivered to cells.
    ---
    ### Debunking Breathing Myths
McKeown takes issue with the widespread but incorrect belief that taking bigger breaths leads to increased oxygen uptake. He explains that this misconception likely stems from a misunderstanding of the role of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the body. Contrary to popular belief, CO2 is not merely a waste product; it serves as a catalyst for the release of oxygen from red blood cells to body tissues. Over-breathing or hyperventilating can actually reduce levels of CO2, leading to less efficient oxygen delivery.
    ---
    ### Sleep and Its Connection to Mental Health
The podcast also delves into the critical relationship between sleep quality and mental health. McKeown discusses how poor sleep can exacerbate conditions like depression, anxiety, and stress. He suggests that one of the most straightforward ways to improve sleep quality is to tape the mouth shut at night, forcing nose breathing. This practice, he claims, leads to a more refreshing sleep experience, thereby improving mental health.
    ---
    ### The Dangers of Sleeping Positions
McKeown warns against sleeping on one's back, as it increases the risk of obstructive sleep apnea. This condition, characterized by interrupted breathing during sleep, has been linked to various health issues, including high blood pressure and cardiovascular problems. He recommends sleeping on the side as a preventive measure.
    ---
    ### Modern Distractions and Attention Span
The podcast touches on the impact of modern technology on attention span. McKeown cites studies showing a significant drop in attention span over the years, attributing it to the constant distractions provided by smartphones and other devices. This decline in attention span has a cascading effect on mental health, contributing to increased levels of stress and anxiety.
    ---
    ### Breathing and Athletic Performance
McKeown also discusses his work with athletes, emphasizing that improper breathing techniques can severely limit performance. Athletes who engage in shallow, rapid breathing are more likely to experience muscle fatigue and reduced stamina. By correcting their breathing patterns, they can significantly improve their performance.
    ---
    ### Practical Breathing Exercises
Towards the end of the podcast, McKeown offers some practical exercises to improve breathing and, by extension, overall well-being. One such exercise involves holding one's breath while walking and then jogging. This exercise aims to increase CO2 levels temporarily, improving oxygen delivery to cells.
    ---
    ### Conclusion
Patrick McKeown's insights into breathing, sleep, and overall well-being challenge conventional wisdom and offer a new perspective on health. By understanding the science behind breathing and making simple changes in our habits, we can dramatically improve our quality of life.

My lungs were damaged by breathing in mold from an old air conditioning system inside a cold box where I worked with milk I got asthma I was waking up choking suffocating my job didn't tell me not to work in their the doctor just handed me medication to help me breathe didn't ask me where I was working and now I'm dealing with damage longs I'm looking into all these websites that can teach me how to cure this problem how to live with damage lungs and I could tell you on the breathing test after listening to keep my mouth closed when I breathe my breathing oxygen went up from 88 to 91 just from closing my mouth 6 minute walk that a lung specialist will have you do to see if you need oxygen supplemental

You do not give the actual breathing to be done. Why don’t you give a practical demonstration before going into all this detail! Very confusing. You must give demonstrations! Too much talking and none the wiser of how exactly you want us to breathe!

Lynn Marie Lumiere to say breathe through the nose is not enough! We all breathe through the nose all the time. He needs to demonstrate the correct way as he sees it. The whole of his belief is based on breathing correctly, so it stands to reason he MUST get his message of breathing properly across to all his followers!
