  • After all the hull repairs and painting were completed in Part 3 of this restoration series it was time to outfit the interior of the canoe with new seating, gunwales, refinished thwarts and newly inset ash decks vice the standard deck on top of gunwales traditionally found in many Mad River Canoe Models. I think this project turned out better than expected and am very pleased with the result. The owner of the canoe was thrilled to see the restoration improvements and intends to gift the canoe to his son. Another rewarding project complete. Appreciate you all for following along and commenting on the project. Thanks for watching.

    Nice to see a wreck come back together in a nice way. You can file that Patches name in the trash can now. If you're up to paddling some downeast waters, I'm still shooting for some time in September to run the whole length of the East Machias river water shed.

      This project was challenging due to all the damage. Surprisingly and with effort the project turned out better than expected. The most important thing is the owner is very pleased with the result. I haven’t had much time for canoeing lately. Not sure when I head out again but it would definitely be a last minute thing and most likely up North. Life can get busy sometimes. I do enjoy canoeing the downeast region.

      @@mainetripper It would be cool to see a video report after a season or two of use on this boat, how things held up. My September plans have changed busy is a understatement. I'm pushing my trip to late Sept into October which will be a super time to be out on the river, fall colors, cooler temps, no bugs, maybe some grouse hunting mixed in. I hope to get into norther Maine in the spring for some trout fishing.

      @downeastprimitiveskills7688 I would definitely do a recap after suitable use however this canoe belongs to my uncle. In all actuality the canoe will be car topped and delivered to his son in California. I am confident the canoe will perform however I will certainly ask for reports to provide an update to the canoe.
      I haven’t found an open window to get out in the canoe since spring. Lots have happened since then. I will get out there on a last minute whim when I see the slightest window. Life is busy……couldn’t agree more!

    I’ve done a little canoe repair and built one stripper, so I have an appreciation for the quality of your work and the time involved. I wonder if you ever tried to estimate the number of hours and the cost of materials? I suspect these restorations would cost almost as much as a new canoe!

      Canoe restorations can in fact take a lot of time. One of the things to consider when one decides to restore a canoe is what exactly is the sentimental value. Can’t put a price on the memories that particular crafts hold with people. Many people contact me regarding the want to restore their grandfathers canoe or great grandfathers canoe and they all come with a story. I enjoy restoring canoes that mean something to people especially canoes that they don’t want to let go.

    Wonderful work sir. Are the gunnels pre dried or green?

      @mainetripper  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Thank you! The gunwales are made of ash rough cut lumber that has been dry for years.

      @@mainetripper Thankyou for responding. My son took our Kevlar 16 ft into Algonquin Park,this past Labour day weekend. The yoke broke and the gunwales are old. I’m going to replace all the wood with ash.I’ll make sure it’s dried.I’ve looked at some other videos on CZcams and your channel is one of the best.Your videos and you explanations are excellent. Much appreciated!

      @adamsons2890 I am humbled kind sir. There is a lot of knowledge out there and lots of information available from the canoe craft master craftsman. Sometimes these tasks become so much an afterthought to them because they can do this work in their sleep. Sometimes a much simpler explanation is required. This is what I shoot for and I am very pleased to learn that the video has provided you with a sense of know how and how to approach the project. Comments like these make what I do as a hobby all worthwhile. Thank you for kindness. Appreciate it!
