Wood Canvas Canoe Restoration ‘Chestnut Chum’

- This video captures the progression of my recently restored 15’ Chestnut Chum Wood Canvas Canoe in a non instructional manner. The project spanned a year and a half which didn’t make a video series practical. The timeline covers over a year and a half due to only having time to work on the Chum an hour here and an hour there. My inspiration and desire to tackle a wood canvas canoe restoration was because of the influence of Robin Lauer @RobinLauer who is a true traditional canoe paddler and has restored many Chestnut brand canoes. I just had to give it a try. I will discuss in my near future canoe trip exactly what I restored on the chestnut chum and some detail on how I achieved the results that I did.
Hope you all enjoy this very brief video of my efforts to bring an old canoe back to life!
Lovely restoration!
Thank you! I have my regrets of not fully documenting the entire process with the Chestnut Chum. Time was not on my side during this particular project. Thank for watching!
WOW man,it was amazing!!!!!!!
It was a fun project. Already on the prowl for another one to keep me busy over winter. Thanks for watching.
Top Shelf!
Thank you and I appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment! Have a great evening.
Really nice restoration. That Kirby paint color is awesome. I’ve never used it. Always used Petit and Interlux topsides paint. They don’t have anything close to that Greyling grey.
Kirby is a solid product. I don’t have any particular brand loyalty but truly do appreciate the Kirby color options. Petit and Interlux are also quality paints as you are aware. Thanks for the kind words! Happy New Year!
What a thing of beauty ! Holy cow that’s fantastic ! Love the color. Very , very nice, you should be proud of that craft sir ! Be well, Peace ✌️
Craig, great to hear from you! Glad you liked the project. Going to put it to the test very soon. Not the typical multi mileage slog but a nice relaxing trip with a base camp. Hope all is well brother!
@@mainetripper Great to hear your getting out for a paddle ! Justin and I are headed back up to the Debs again next month, we enjoyed the area last year so much ! And there is a lot more we want to explore. Talk to you soon ! Cheers
I considered doing the Debs again and have not completely ruled it out. Still trying to decide where or what my route will look like.
@@mainetripper Be safe and enjoy

Means a lot. Appreciate you taking the time to watch and comment. Have a great weekend!
That turned out really nice 👍
Appreciate it Corey! Enjoyed your latest video. Coffee and Tea and a remote lake. Perfect!

Thanks Nick, really enjoy your videos! Beautiful Scenery and great paddling skills to boot! Well done!
great video 👍
Just a short one. Glad you liked it.
Respect for your work: She is once again a true beauty!
A question about the color: Is this the original bluish green-gray chestnut color? I'm looking for it...
Thank you for kind words! The paint I selected for the Chestnut Chum was from Kirby Paint “Grayling Gray”. I selected this color simply because I liked it, however it is not the original color scheme used by Chestnut for the Green/Gray blend. Kirby has a very decent vintage color schedule that may meet your needs. I don’t always use their paint but I can provide testimony that they have a solid product. Hope this helps! Happy Holidays!
very nice! What did it come out to as far as weight is concerned?
The chum is heavier than I would like it to be but the final weight is approx 60lbs.
Hi,
i picked up a chum yesterday...
am wondering if you can tell me the size of the keel? mine appears to be a bit high.. maybe 1" square...seems big!
My apologies for just seeing this message now. The keel that was attached to my chum was 3/4” by 12ft long. The shoe keel tapered from end to end from 3/4” to 2 1/2 inches at its midpoint. I elected not to reinstall the shoe keel as it’s weight alone was approx 4.5lbs and I wasn’t interested in poking new holes through the new canvas. Again sorry for the late response and I hope this information is helpful.
