Oh I have a recipe for those unbaked snowballs. I think they have peanut butter,icing sugar, chopped marachino cherries and chopped walnuts in them to. I have not made those in years. My mother's old recipe.
I LOVE to see the relationship you have with Nan. I tried to have a relationship with my Mother in law but she did everything in her power to stop that from happening. I'm married for 37 years to my best friend, unfortunately he is an only child. She tried to get my husband to have an affair before we got married to make sure he was sure. I thank God my daughter was born 3.5 years after we got married. I know she was counting days. I know you cherish her. Please hug her for me. I love dates! My Mom always made date ‘n nut bread, served it with cream cheese...heavenly. Up until a few years ago, I would make the mini loaves, wrap them in foil and put a 3-ounce cream cheese on top for gifts. I can’t find the small packs of cream cheese anymore.
Those look so good, one of my favorite things to make but I am the only one that enjoys them so not making them this year. Just a quick tip if you add just a couple tablespoons of orange juice to the dates when you are softening them it brings out so much extra flavour. I learned that about 40 years ago and everyone who ate them begged for my recipe and I am finally sharing it. I do mine exactly like you with the only difference being the OJ.

Just about any larger grocery store will havem packaged dates in baking needs aisle. Middle Eastern food stores in larger cities often have fresh dates.....bummer to prepare though.
