  • In honor of Tom T. Hall who has recently been selected to receive the Academy of Country Music Poet's Award for 2011, which honors songwriters for outstanding musical and/or lyrical contributions throughout their careers in the field of country music. Congratulations Mr. Hall for this well deserved award.
"Faster Horses (The Cowboy and The Poet)" Full lyrics below,
    Vocals: Tom T. Hall
Words & Music: Tom T. Hall
Original Album: Faster Horses (Mercury Records-1976)
    Lyrics:
He was an old time cowboy don't you understand
His eyes were sharp as razor blades, his face was leather tan
His toes were pointed inward from a hangin' on a horse
He was an old philosopher of course
He was so thin I swear you could have used him for a whip
He had to drink a beer to keep his britches on his hips
I knew I had to ask him about the mysteries of life
He spit between his boots and he replied
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
He smiled and all his teeth were covered with tobacco stains
He said it don't do men no good to pray for peace and rain
Peace and rain is just a way to save prosperity
And buffalo chips is all that means to me
I told him I was a poet, I was lookin' for the truth
I do not care for horses, whiskey, women or the loot
I said I was a writer, my soul was all on fire
He looked at me and he said you are a liar
    Son it's
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Well I was disillusioned if I say the least
I grabbed him by the collar and I jerked him to his feet
There was somethin' cold and shiny laying by my head
So I started to believe the things he said
Well my poet days are over and I'm back to bein' me
As I enjoy the peace and comfort of reality
If my boy ever asks me what it is that I have learned I think that I will readily affirm
    Son it's
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money
Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money

When I lived in Nashville back in the early 70s, I met Tom t Franco. He wrote more songs than anybody else. You can imagine they would not let him sing him.Because he was not a singer until he got his own recordings studio

You know, the other thing is that usually, when an artist dies, you know you'll never hear anything new from them. But in Tom T's case, even though I know dozens of his songs, I wander around youtube and I still find new songs that I haven't heard before, or "new" old songs that I had forgotten about years ago. They'll never be another Tom T Hall. May he rest in peace.

Me and my parents listened to his concert footage on PBS when I was a kid about 30 years ago playing this song and Old Dogs, Children and Watermelon Wine One of my dad's favorite artists. I started listening to these on an country oldies station about 15 yrs. ago My dad didn't drive a fast car, had one wife, didn't drink and never had a lot of money (enough to have a good life) but he got the meaning of it. Hall was Country Music's Kentucky Poet Laureate. He's being missed.
