Love the comments and enthusiasm for beautiful music. I have always loved this song. Being an old boy I remember this when it came out, the retro sound, the high tenor of Souther’s voice--and yes a touch of Orbison, but also the age-old C-Am-F-G simplicity of earliest rock. Souther and the Eagles were pals--but to hear that Jackson Browne and Phil Everly--of the EVERLY BROTHERS-!!-sang on it too--wow. Gorgeous.

From the 1979 album, You're only Lonely, this was J.D.'s only top 10 hit. It was heavily influenced by Roy Orbinson's hit " Only the Lonely".
His back up singers on the song were Phil Everly, Jackson Browne, and Frey, Felder and Henley from The Eagles. J.D. also wrote or co wrote at least 6 of The Eagles hits. This beautiful song made it to Number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100's and 18 in Canada. Great song. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and John. 👏👏
    Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

J.D. Souther was a frequent collaborator with Glenn Frey and Don Henley of the Eagles. He is credited as a co-writer on the Eagles hits "The Best of My Love", "James Dean", "Heartache Tonight", "Victim of Love", "New Kid In Town" and Don Henley's solo hit "Heart of the Matter". As to your Roy Orbison observation, on the 1980 "Long Run" tour, Roy Orbison opened for the Eagles. On the 2014 "History of the Eagles" tour, J.D. Souther was their opening act. I had the pleasure of seeing shows from each of those tours in L.A.
Oh, and by the way, Glenn pronounced his name "Fry" NOT "Fray".

  • @cornpop8299
    @cornpop8299 Před 7 měsíci

Souther told us that Roy Orbison, who had a hit with "Only The Lonely," was a big influence on this song. Said Souther: "I was a little kid when I first heard Roy Orbison, but he was magic. He's the guy that you turned out the lights and listened to his records by yourself - or with a girl - because he was just completely other-worldly. He had sarcastic and adventurous songs and great arrangements, and then that beautiful, almost operatic voice. Beautiful, natural deep echo on it. He is one of half a dozen or so rockabilly musicians that I really loved. When I was in junior high school was the first time I really started listening to that.
But then I started playing drums all the time, and I got so fascinated with jazz, I didn't really think much about singing or making rock and roll records for quite a few years. The first song I ever heard called 'Only the Lonely' was this song that Frank Sinatra sang. It's a Johnny Mercer song; it's on a Sinatra album called Songs for Only the Lonely. There are a lot of songs with that name. But the beat that I used for 'You're Only Lonely' is that rockabilly beat. That sort of break in it was taken from another Roy Orbison record called 'I'm Hurtin'' that I really love."

JD Souther almost became a founding member of The Eagles but decided to pursue other interests. He did write a few songs for them over the years. In the mid 70's he decided to be part of a project David Geffen was putting together. He joined Chris Hillman from The Byrds and Richie Furay from Poco and formed The Souther Hillman Furay Band. They made some great music (2 albums) but Souther never really got along with anybody, and they split up. The SHF Band is really worth checking out. Souther, Hillman and Furay did blend well in their harmonies. Some great songs from them include "Fallin' In Love", "Believe Me", "Lay Down on the Line", and "The Heartbreaker."

You have an opportunity to experience the and 70's again, but now, for the first time in the 21st century. Take this journey along with Harri. The internet allows for this type of pseudo time travel. There are movies, albums, photos, and news articles to provide a structure to your missing memories. They cannot replicate your memories, but they can help you to be able to pull from this new store of experiences when asked "do you remember the song 'Your Only Lonely'?" Now you can give a valid answer.
Do not feel alone. It has been said many times that the people who remember the 60's or 70's were not really there. There are millions of people who do not remember ... you have a leg up on them because you know how and why you do not remember ... meanwhile, the rest of us are stumbling through life thinking that we remember.
Please understand that this was not meant to belittle the most traumatic event. I understand just a little of what you live with. I have a mild case of PTSD. I can not forget my experiences and relive some of them on a recurring basis. They are twenty years in the past, until I wake up screaming. I feel the effects of frequent panic attacks and difficulty dealing with people.
      You are not alone....

@Urma Webb may a Gracious God watch over you and yours.
We who are broken need to stand up for each other. We all have bad days when the darkness within us seems to swell and obliterate all that is good. This is usually the result of a chemical imbalance in our brain. If so, then it can be treated. Reach out to the mental health professionals that are open to you. The only shame in asking for help is the shame that we take so long suffering needlessly. Too many are ignoring the signs until they end their own life in the attempt to stop the pain.
We who are broken need to help each other. If only to remind the other that they are not alone. I've been there and it's not a happy place. Seek assistance from mental health professionals. The absolutely worst outcome is being told that you are ok and require no treatment.
Regardless, take this journey along with Harri and his Harri's Bestees. You will have fun.

You’re Only Lonely” was such a stylistic tribute to Roy that listeners could hardly tell the difference. You gave up a minute too soon; it really is related to Roy Orbison. JD Souther was an ex-Honey of Linda Ronstadt. This record was a regular Who's Who of rock.

Yes, Souther was greatly influenced by Texan Roy Orbison. In fact, JD'sis biggest hit as a solo artist was the 1979 Orbison-influenced song "You're Only Lonely" Following his move to Los Angeles in the late 1960s, he met a young guitarist from Detroit named Glenn Frey. They bonded over their Detroit roots and a shared love of country and R&B music. In short order, they began working together while sharing a small apartment in Los Angeles' Echo Park area (their downstairs neighbor was Jackson Browne with whom both Souther and Frey would collaborate on numerous projects).
J.D. Souther is a personal favorite. He is an American singer, songwriter, and actor. He has written and co-written songs recorded by Linda Ronstadt and the Eagles. Souther is probably best known for his songwriting abilities, especially in the field of country rock. He co-wrote some of the biggest hits for the Eagles, including "Best of My Love", "Victim of Love", "Heartache Tonight", and "New Kid in Town". "How Long", which appears on the Eagles' Long Road Out of Eden, was written by Souther and originally recorded on his first solo album in 1972. Souther recorded two major hit songs in his solo career: "You're Only Lonely" (1979) and "Her Town Too" (1981), a duet with his longtime friend James Taylor. John Chu, this was an outstanding submission, and Harri, your thorough review was terrific.

Ok. My first thought was he sounds a lot like Glenn Frey! Then I read some comments and found he worked with Frey. Great song.

He and Linda Ronstadt dated for a couple of years. They remain good friends. She recorded many songs he wrote. They sang together on this one with country star Ricky Skaggs on mandolin and on third harmony. czcams.com/video/vuEdxpDViqg/video.html
