Fun story: I was at an outdoor concert where, between sets, this guy came out in overalls with a pushbroom to clean the stage. He pushed it around for a while, then went to the mic at centerstage and said: "Oh, I see they've got the mike working. You know I've always sort of wanted to sing. Sort of been a dream of mine. I've written some songs. Maybe I should try one out here." He proceeded to sing an Eagles hit. Well, we went crazy. He said "Oh yeah, I wrote this song too," and sang a another hit by the Eagles. After his third Eagles hit he left the stage while waving to cheers. It was J.D. Souther.
That's a great story. One night me and some friends from work went to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Jimmy Page and Robert Plant were sitting at a table next to us having some beers. A bar in Dallas early 80s
So cool!
Great Story!
J.D. Souther was part of that southern California early 70's club with The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne and many more who frequented the Troubadour. In 2011 Souther, at age 65 put out an album entitled NATURAL HISTORY. It includes the hits he wrote back in the day such as BEST OF MY LOVE, NEW KIDS IN TOWN and FAITHLESS LOVE. I am 70 now and listening to Souther, with his incredible voice, retell these stories of love and loss is one of the most beautiful albums I have ever heard.
Here is the cut GO AHEAD AND RAIN from Souther's NATURAL HISTORY album. Please enjoy. czcams.com/video/vTgP3TeyHFQ/video.html
EVER HEAR ABOUT ATLANTA TEXAS.
HOME TO A WHOLE LOT OF MUSIC.
MY BROTHER WAS IN GARAGE BAND WITH HENLEY. T BONE WALKER SCOTT JOPLIN ROSCOE BECK ALL FROM HERE.
Thank you for J.D. Souther's catalog. I too remember the way the Sound of Southern California influenced Rock and Roll and how the ballads were beautifully written. They were like snapshots of what life in California once was like. The beauty of nature and the human experiences when living in a beautiful place in the sun. I loved this music, It was so sensual and emotional.
His collab on James Taylor's song Her Town Too has very nice harmonies. It was made in 1981. I sooo recommend a reaction to it.
100% Agree!
Mr. Souther has a remarkable and very distinctive voice. He came into my radar back in the early 1970s along with Jackson Browne and later the Eagles.
JD was the voice that smooth rock / country rock loved to have on backing vocals back in the day.
He was in that role on the great song & album by Linda Ronstadt called Prisoner in Disguise. Even if you don’t react to it on your channel, I’d recommend you give it a listen.
It’s a beautiful song, and JD’s backing vocal is sublime, especially at the song’s climax.
Literally gives me goosebumps each time… and I’m 64 yrs old & don’t get goosebumps!
You are spot on Angela the 70's were great for music this is the era I grew up in and my musical interest have grown wider through out the years thanks for reacting to the 70's
The 70s were one of the greatest decades in music. So many genres of sound an incredible time for sure.
It's great to see someone's reaction to the first time hearing these now classics that a lot of us grew up on. The 70's was probably the most interesting decade of music as you have alluded to, the sound kept changing. Not only changing but it is a decade where you had instrumental, country, pop, disco, soul, rock, TV themes and even novelty songs going to the top 10 of Billboard songs of the week. Just a great and interesting decade of music.
And rap/hip-hop, Sugarhill gang
You're right. This was a track that was purposefully made as a kind of tribute to the Roy Orbison sound. Backing vocals by The Eagles, Phil Everly, and Jackson Browne.
You are beuatiful like the melody of this song!Thank you darling!😅
I cry every time I hear this song. He wrote many great songs ❤️
I always loved this song....it's on my romantic playlist..
He wrote a bunch of songs with and for the Eagles. He and Don Henley were good friends.
He and Glenn Frey lived together and they were in an acoustic duo together.
The 70's were a great time to be alive. The music, the movies, TV, the whole world. IT was a great time to be young... Thanks for this stroll down memory lane for me. I graduated HS in 1974, so this was my decade of growing up!!!! Thanks...
Hello Angela: Thank you for all of your hard work in putting together this 70's retrospective! This was a decade of remarkable innovation in vocals, instrumentation and sound engineering; and you're right, it is fascinating to watch the personal evolution of the various artists. All the best to you, young lady! 👍👍💜💜
I agree, This song sounded like it was from the late 50s. Right on. I Love it.
I cry again listening to this 😅. Beautiful song 🎶
The 70s were my teenage years and it's hard to summarize the decade in a few minutes or a few sentences or with a handful of songs. We had the beginning of progressive rock, disco and heavy metal. We also had great easy listening from James Taylor, Cat Stevens, Elton John, Carly Simon, etc. We also had ELO, & Supertramp who redefined what "rock" music was not to mention Queen and so many others. I began playing guitar in '74 with my first song being a John Denver classic. All in all it was a very diverse decade and IMO still some of the best music ever produced. Thanks for dedicating time to my favorite decade of music.
We had the best music! It was music's golden age.
---- class of '77
I love him so much ❤ I usually like a guy in jeans, but he made that dress shirt and tie look GOOD 😻
This is a throw back but was ment to be ! Glad you were able to see how all the greats climbed the latter of fame or their start. Thank you Angela, for me this is memory lane. Thank you!
James Taylor and J.D.Souther 'Her Town Too" is so nice.
JD did a duet of "Faithless Love" with Matraca Berg that's still one of my faves. He also did a duet with James Taylor, "It Used to be Your Town".
Indelible in my memory. Can't stop listening.
I had a friend in high school that used to sing backup for this guy, thank you for the memories.
the great thing about the 60s, 70s, and 80s, is that when a song came on the radio, you know EXACTLY who the band was. They all had their distinct sound.
Yes! One of my favs! Thank you for bringing this one up!
It's funny that you mention Roy Orbison because JD Souther was one of the backup singers for Roy Orbison - Only the Lonely and Pretty Woman, and others, on (Roy Orbison Black & White Night 30), which can be viewed on You Tube.
This song is better than Only the Lonely. It's much smoother.
J.D. did so many backup tracks on some of the greatest hits. My favorites were with Linda Rhondstadt or James Taylor.
J D Souther's ode to Roy Orbison. Mr. Souther lives a reclusive life and is known to be rather cantankerous. There's no denying he left his mark on music though. With many hit songs under his belt. J D joined K D Lang and Bonnie Raitt as the backing vocals chorus for Roy Orbison and Friends Black and White Night. This concert was filmed 30 September 1987 at L A's Ambassador Hotel's Coconut Grove night club. Angela, I enjoyed your trip down 70's Lane very much, RNB
JD wrote a beautiful song❤
J.D Souther in some of those photos looks amazingly like George Custer. (who was also a red-head like Souther).
I've watched a lot of Angela's reaction videos. She has an old soul for certain but can we all take a moment to appreciate her epic hair! In any style she has it in....it's beautiful. Lovely young lady...
I remember this song growing up.as a kid.
He definitely had the Roy O sound. Raul Malo of the Mavericks sounds just like him in his rendition of 'only the lonely".
Great song! Haven't heard it in years and almost forgot how good it was. 👍🏼
Jd was one of the best song writers ever, he wrote so so many songs of the Eagles, he was a song writer and he had an incredible voice, you must be half deaf
J. D. Souther wrote so many great songs in collaboration with The Eagles. Two of my favorites that you should check out are Faithless Love and Silver Blue from his Black Rose album……
J. D. SOUTHer. Great artist and writer.
Good observations. Music is mostly nostalgic TBH. I was a kid in the 70s so I love 70s music. It’s familiar to me.
J.D. Souther wrote that song as a tribute to Roy Orbison.
It reminds you of Roy Orbison because its supposed to remind you of Orbison! J.D Souther wrote the song as an ode to honor Orbison's music who was one of his idols. And I'd say he did a dang good job. This song was a huge hit for JD Souther., So, he didn't do too bad. Anyone who loves Roy Orbison at the very least appreciates this song for what it is! And anyone who just loves a great song appreciates it for being just that,.. a great song!
JD was also a TV actor back in the 80's. Never knew he was a singer
Forgot how much this song meant to me...Roy Orbison Vibe is absolutely right
I had forgotten this one. Bet I haven't heard this song in 40 years.
Another song of 1979 is "Sad Eyes" by Robert John. Check it out.
Great song from a great era!
Always have liked this song and i think he has a sweet voice. The Roy Orbison vibe I think is not just the words but he had that tempo and I think the rhyrhm with the drum rims. Very much like and good insight. You have to be older I think to appreciate such a sweet voice as his and true natural high notes. This is my fave of his and might be the only one Love the words and now will have to look into his writing and the James Taylor.
John Daniel Souther was a regular contributor to The Eagles songs in the early days. This song sounds like an Eagles ballad for this reason. I bought this single at aged 15. Not many of my people know of him. He's gorgeous too LoL
He and Jackson Browne were the early Eagles, sadly they never received the real credits earned. Henley and Frey received all the accolades!
As is true of any decade, music studios catered to different tastes for different people. I liked this "You're only lonely" when I was in the mood for this kind of sound. Same with all the other genre's of that time.
When this song came out, I found it very reminiscent of "Only the Lonely" by Roy Orbison. I still do. This song by JD Souther has an early-1960s sound to it, just like all those C-Am-F-G songs from that era.
For the best of JD Souther as a writer, you might want to check out a couple of songs of his done by Linda Ronstadt -- Simple Man, Simple Dreams and Prisoner in Disguise.
Also Nicolette Larson did a great version of Last In Love, truly one of the all-time cry-in-your-beer songs.
Lotta Love is a good one. Written by Neil Young.
the only thing this song compares to roy orbison's only the lonely is each song has two of the same words
We love it.
I've always wondered if he wrote this for Linda Ronstadt.
He used play with the Eagles and Linda Ronstadt.
Nice choice, Angela. What a voice! His album 'Black Rose' (c.1975) was a great favourite of mine back in the day. He could easily have fit smoothly into the Eagles, and made a significant contribution to their sound anyway. J D deserved a lot more mainstream success than he ever got for some reason, though much admired among his peers.
One of the keys to understanding the cool music of the 70s is it was all about albums, unlike the 60s which was all about hit singles, and by the middle of this decade most of the artists that focused on the singles market were mediocre commercial hitmakers (with exceptions of course). In fact I despaired of listening to the radio completely at that time, getting all my good grooves directly from the record stores, live concerts and word of mouth. Some important artists resisted issuing singles at all, except when pressured by greedy marketing execs, and when they did it wasn't at all typical. So with respect, please don't embarrass yourself with an attempt at historical analysis. The decade's popular music was incredibly diverse and creative, so much more than disco, punk, Abba and Saturday Night Fever. You've barely scratched the surface and simply haven't heard enough to have a valid perspective yet. In fact, I'm still finding 'essential' stuff that I missed out on, and I've been listening a lot longer than you.
Another song of JD's you might want to check out is, "The Last In Love" It was written by Glen Frey of the Eagles.
Spot on with the Roy Orbison comparison, Angela. I thought the same thing too when I first heard this song many years ago.
It definitely has that Orbison vibe to it…
Great song!
Her Town Too from JD and James Taylor is a great duet
I'm sure he was heavily influenced by Roy Orbison. Good ear Angela! You got a vast amount of knowledge. Bravo!👍👍👏👏👏👏👏
JD Souther wrote so many song for the Eagles back in the 1970s and tbh he should have recorded them himself with that voice 😊
I think you would enjoy the song " Him" by Rupert Holmes. You may remember that he sang the Pina Colada song.
echoes of roy orbison
Perhaps you would like Nigel Olsson's cover of A Little Bit Of Soap?
Souther wrote the song!
You should hear ot twenty years later as he was hearing it having not played it for many years he [put a updated touch to it. As i said he wrote and the eagles performed several of his tunes.
Yep, so right. Orison vibe, but it's all good. JD was a great contributor to the 70's and beyond. Check out the Souther, Hillman Furray band. Great harmonizer, and songwriter. And pickin' up on the Orbison vibe ain't no crime. Yeah, a throwback, a tribute, not a rip-off. Great month, Angela, we should do this again sometime.... I said this before but a great sequence going forward might be 60's, then 90s, 80s, and 50s. But there's lots of 70's tracks that'll still be coming as requests in the non-theme months !!! You know that's true!
You could sing along with mellow 70s !
💛✌👍
Souther WROTE and performed Only Lonely. Roy Orbison / J. Melson wrote and Orbison performed Only The Lonely. Two different songs.
This song is so close to Roy Orbison's "Only The Lonely" I usually don't like that but this song is so damn good.
If you haven't listened already, try Fleetwood Mac, "Silver Springs" live. Pretty dynamic....
Hey ,,check out edgar winter's white trash. That band was smoken! I promise it's jaw dropping!!
You didn't play my favorite of all time, Hotel California by The Eagles, or Lost In Music by Sister Sledge, featuring the late and beautiful Joni Sledge! Maybe I'll be surprised! This one is cool for country pop!
Nothing wrong with it. Seriously. We grew into love experiences with his music.
Hopefully you do this again, it was fun! There is a sh!t ton of music (acts/bands) that was popular in the 70's & 80’s that you should check out just too see the music scene. Some examples:
AIR SUPPLY
THE BAY CITY ROLLERS
THE BABYS
BILLY SQUIRE
OLIVIA NEWTON JOHN
KISS
BARRY MANILOW
SWEET
KOOL & THE GANG
FOGHAT
EDDIE MONEY
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN
THE CARS
YES
WAYLON JENNINGS
LYNYRD SKYNYRD
and MANY one hit wonders.
Definitely Roy Orbison was his mentor!
You need to react to James Taylor and J.D. Souther - "Her Town Too". Also, react to J.D. Souther's acoustic version of "New Kid In Town" (a song he co-wrote for the Eagles.)
And finally, you must react to the best cover of "You're Only Lonely" that's ever been done. It's by Fortune/Walker/Rogers/Isaacs
if you react to more 70's..three i recommend are nicollette larson { lotta of love}..maxine nightinggale {right back where we started from, and carl douglass kung fu fighting. i thin you would enjoy those three.
Even as a subscriber, I'm late to the party.
Aside from the obvious Roy Orbison connotations - the lyrics, vocals and drum rhythm - this song is firmly rooted in Doo Wop, one of the great genres of 1950s Rock 'n' Roll.
The 1970's was a fascinating time in popular music. The 1960's was even more eclectic. Most of what the 1970's did was influenced HUGE by the 1960's. The only big difference is Disco. Like I said, Michael Jackson had A LOT of help getting where he got. That is why I like Prince better than Mike. Prince did it all. I am fascinated by you Angela. Very smart. ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLRIGHTY Then!! ACE
I’m sorry but I gotta say you are stunning, when your eyes look to the side it gets me.
Great comparison to Roy orbison
You haven't seemed quite yourself the last week or so I hope all is well.
Definitely Roy Orbison vibe.
Very good Angela. This is an average song for the 1970's. He does sound like Roy Orbison as does Chris Isaak. And the early 70's is much different from the late 70's. The late 70's actually introduces us to Rap.
Can you react to Dancing in the moonlight by King Harvest?
Son of Roy Orbison.
Can you please react to Jody Watley - 'Still a Thrill' and 'If' (all dance version) - Janet Jackson Thank you and great channel.
Angela is sweet. 🙂
I think he wrote this song for his ex- Linda Ronstadt.
Nothing from the Eagles?
Hopefully this channel goes to another era cause i really hate the 70's. And thats all this channel is doing.
its not a good song, its a great song. u missed that one. but it is a matter of opinion
Ricky Nelson clone!
who is she? thinks she knows music lol
I hate to say it, but the Top 40 music in late 1979 was weak. Take the Long Way Home by Supertramp and Cruisin’ by Smokey Robinson may have been the best songs at that time. Disco music was coming to an end and not much was there to replace it. Rapper’s Delight by Sugarhill Gang was about to hit the Top 40 to open up the 80’s.
I get your point, but generally compared to the stuff that followed...no wonder I headed for jazz, blues & beyond rock/pop. From my personal perspective, looking at the top 100 Billboard charts, it's primarily; disco, pop ballads & MOR elevator rock. At that time, mostly anything punk, new wave, disco or pop, was intolorable...my ears & taste have broadened since then.
Michael Jackson released three singles in the second half of 1979.
