When I think about Lebanon, my mind goes straight to the tough times of the civil war. But, your video opened my eyes to the stunning coastline that I never knew existed. It's really beautiful!
The explosion at the port of Beirut was absolutely devastating. I feel terrible for the people of Lebanon. They've already gone through so much and it's really sad to see them suffering even more

The civil war was a defining moment in the modern history of Lebanon, and even though it technically ended in 1989, we're still living its repercussions because of the political/ governance structure it bred. That aside, the country is nothing short of beautiful -- the beaches, mountains, people, culture and food. Though it's been one catastrophe after the other as if living in purgatory...

Is the reason for the economic collapse in Lebanon, because the port has been destroyed and still not rebuild and fully working as before?

    • @longinchina

No. The economic collapse started in earnest in late 2019 with a liquidity crisis when huge sums of dollars that belong to ultra wealthy and politicians left the country following mass protests against corruption and government mismanagement. And with little capital inflow, dollar (which is widely used in Lebanon next to Lira and also a way to pay for imports) became hard to come by. Banks as a result shut small depositors out of their savings and the local currency began to sink. But really the disaster was decades in the making because of the way the banking sector functioned and how successive governments failed to enact reforms. Covid in 2020 compounded the unraveling economic crisis and the port explosion made it even worse. There's a good explainer on Reuters about how Lebanon got to where it is now, if you have time to read it: www.reuters.com/markets/rates-bonds/lebanons-financial-crisis-how-it-happened-2022-01-23/

I remember when I was a child, all I heard on the news was the wars between Lebanon and Palestine.
