I had a neighbor giving away her schefflera so I gladly took it. What I didn’t know was this thing is huge and over 50 years old! It was a wedding present from her husband. I’m a nervous wreck, afraid of killing it! I’ve had it 2 years now and so far so good. I’m grateful that I came across this video. I have a little more confidence keeping it alive.
Tifani Reed, They are lovely plants, as you see, and they do get huge!! That is quite an old one! I can understand why it would make you nervous to now be her caretaker. I'm glad that the video has given you more confidence. One thing I will reiterate, when in doubt about watering, don't water. Wait a day or two and check again. You want to avoid overwatering her.

I love my Schefflera. It is such a easy plant. Just perfect without any drama. I always water it from the bottom every 10 days.

Informative video purchased one last year and well the leaves started dropping and probably from over watering and it died from root rot: Purchased two more about 6 month's ago and they are thriving both are outside primarily in bright indirect sunlight they receive water twice a month im using liquid organic fertilizer lightly pinched the leaves top and bottom and both have produced new branches eventually I will have to separate and repot because each pot has 3 plants obviously I learned a valuable lesson my first time around thank you for your valuable information

I had a friend when I lived in Houston, TX during the mid and late '70's who had this as his only houseplant. During those years (I was totally ignorant of houseplant care in those days), I never heard him talk about it in terms of care. I assume he gave it a little drink of water once in a while. It sat in his dining area where it got very minimal light as well. It survived all those years and basically stayed the same size! That's been my only exposure to this beautiful plant. All I can say is, it must be an easy care jobber!
I am going through all your videos. I like your style clear and to the point. Question... I gave my huge Heart Leaf Philodendron to my granddaughter. I took some leaf cutting and have them rooting in moist moss. They seem to be doing fine. I've rarely have success when transplanting cuttings. You have any tips about transplanting cuttings to soil? rustown, Thank you for the feedback. I'm glad that the videos are helpful! I actually have a video that I shot recently that will be going out in the next 2-3 weeks about how to transplant cuttings grown in water into soil. Subscribe and check the bell if you haven't already and you'll be notified when new videos are released. It's a method of transferring them to part soil/part water until they make soil roots. Because soil roots and water roots are different.
i cut a baby from my mums plant and it's growing so nicely on my windowsill! Thinking of cutting it a bit to bush it out
Unicorn island, that's great that your plant is growing really well. If you do decide to cut it some, make sure not to cut by more than 1/3 at any given pruning.
My plant had very little damage from the store , when I bought it , I watered & used some Miracle grow , it got slightly bigger , then all of a sudden, went back to looking dull , it’ll grow just a bit , but the leaves that do will fall off if I touch it ! I’ve heard where you can feed most tropical plants coffee ☕️! I’ve used on ivy’s, spider plants with great success! I don’t want to give to this plant unless it’s really safe ! So can I? When I say coffee it’ll be just black the way I drink . I told a friend to add coffee to her ivy she did but , it had sugar & coffee creamer, of course it died , then she blamed me ! I reminded her very specifically plain coffee 😮 !
Question: I have a scheflerra actinofolia I've had for about 5-6 years first four years or so it grew beautifully. But the last year or so all of the new leaves don't spread out like fans as they normally would. They come out folded back on their stems and stay that way. What is wrong with it and can I remedy the problem?
Are self watering pots good for these plants? And how do I know how to help the plant if it looks like it’s struggling? I was just given one and it looks like it could use some tlc but not sure what to do…

I got a shefflera cause I was told it was pretty easy. Well it's the one plant I'm struggling to keep alive! The leaves are dropping so fast. At first I thought it was over watered, then maybe under. Watched a few videos and emptied the pot again to check for root rot but the roots look healthy. Repotted it and it's still dropping. Won't be long until there's nothing left and I don't know if I should give up but I hate being defeated!!
It's a single stem plant with leaves shooting out from the main stem.
DeJayne, it sounds like the plant has some sort of a fungal infection going on even though it's not showing on the roots. The dropping leaves/foliage is an indication of that. It was a condition that the plant got at the grower, so not something you did. I would suggest getting another plant from another place where the plant will be hopefully coming from another grower. So chalk this off to it's not your fault at all. The plant was having trouble before you got it. Plants are slow to show symptoms, though, so it didn't happen until later when you had it.
Did you ever figure out what the problem was? Mine is doing the same thing and its the only plant I am having a problem with.

My friend gave me a few cuttings with longer roots (still in water). After about 2 weeks, a few leaves started turning yellow. Should I put them in soil?
A T, The cuttings may be turning yellow because the water needs to be changed. The water builds up toxins after awhile that will affect the roots and leaves, and it also loses nutrients. Can they be put into soil without the root.... someone cut off a piece and gave it to me
BOMYKNEE SMYTH, It is possible to root schefflera from a clipping, providing the clipping has a stem node on it. On schefflera that is the bump at the end of the stem that is not smooth like the other parts. To have success, it's also best to use rooting hormone. i have one and i love it! but some of its leaves are turning yellow with dark spots underneath the leaves. Is this due to overwatering? or somthing fungal?
Farhana Ferdous Zaman, They are great plants! It could be from overwatering. Do you feel you've been overwatering? How often do you water? How big are the dark spots? Are they not uniform in size? Or do they all look similar in size?
@@HealthyHouseplants Thanks for taking the time to reply! I don't think I've been overwatering it. I water it when its somewhat dry, so after 4 days I think. The dark spots are small, they kind of look like freckles. But im starting to speculate this is due to some sort of mineral deficiency in the soil? Do have any clue of what it can be?
@@farhanaferdouszaman, it sounds more like a fungal problem. Are the dark spots on the lower leaves near the soil? How extensive is the spotting? I would remove the leaves that have spots, if there aren't too many, as it will spread if fungal.
Just bought mine and the first time I watered it, the leaves started to fold in half. It’s getting worse every day. Any ideas?
Melissa Maymon, The plant likely has root rot, and it isn't anything you did. The plant had the disease before you bought it. Watering the plant initiated more fungus growth. I have a video coming up this coming Friday about this very thing, which is more more common than you might think. I actually mention schefflera in the video. Take a look at my Root Rot Playlist to see if you could save the plant; or if you can return it, I would, since, as I mentioned, this is something that didn't happen because of something you did. Can I cut the main root which is root bound because it is about 4 ft long probably it's all spiraled up coiled up and there's some Branch roots which could be allowed to grow then after I cut the main root at about maybe 2 ft or 1 and 1/2 ft? Or will I kill it?
1 weird Doe, It sounds like you have some strong branching roots, so it will probably be okay if you shorten the length of the main root.
@@HealthyHouseplants, okay thank you. I have three of them and left one coiled up like a spring and then cut the other two back like you said. I remember transplanting a maple tree and after 10 years it is still only 4 ft or 5 ft tall so I might have messed with its main root and I thought well maybe I'll hurt these plants by messing with theirs as well. But we'll see how it goes. How long would do you think it will take to know that it's dead and didn't survive?

Hi, I have had this schefflera for about 25 years and have always had a good healthy plant. However I had knee surgery in June and it may have been overwatered. Lol. The leaves are all getting black and dropping like flies. There is absolutely no new growth. Is there anything I can do to save this plant?

If it's in the house sit it outside. I had one in the house by the window. Every day I noticed leaves was on the floor. some green some black. It was down the the sticks. I put it outside on the porch and it has been flourishing ever since. I only bring it in during the winter and any good day during the winter I try put it back outside for some sun.
I repotted my umbrella plant after putting it outside for the summer months, its leaves get spotty and turn yellow falling off. It's near a northern window. Help.

I need to repot my dwarf umbrella tree from the original pot it was in when I bought it September 2021. It has gotten so big and the roots coming out the bottom are very long. Can you help with the soil mixture I should use? I don't want to kill it by choosing the wrong soil with my zero experience repotting

pinkyssj4, Scheffler can grow 2 or 3 stems if you cut at a node, so it's worth trying to get a bushier plant.

@@rustown1 Okay, so it sounds like the soil got very dry? That can cause leaf drop. The plant will drop some leaves and should retain others. It drops leaves to try to survive. Water it well if you haven't already and then wait to see how many leaves drop off in the next few days. Hopefully, it will stop dropping leaves. When you water, make sure to really soak the soil so it is heavy with water. Then you will wait until the soil is approaching dryness but not completely dry before you water again.

I water all my plants with warm or room temperature water. My plants seem to like it as I see new leaves.

@@iddybiddyladybugleeza262 They are similar in lighting requirements, but I would say that they need less frequent watering. They are susceptible to root rot--more so than the money tree.
@@HealthyHouseplants thank you! I’ve learned to repot to my soil mixture that’s suitable for my home and watering schedule. I had gotten 2 money trees from the same place at the same time just different sizes they were doing so good and then boom goners! I’m not sure what I did wrong with them. So I’m trying one more time. This one I got at target from the Hilton Carter collection. I kinda don’t like the braid look & didn’t like how they’re taped together but I left it and when I repot when it’s bigger I’ll take it off.
