Had to come back and view this a few years later and all I can say is thats pretty bang on in terms of the numbers. The incompetence from people employed by the club on high wages trusted to do a good job (none playing staff) let us down, the negotiation of player contracts (Jack Rodwell embargo) and Ellis Shorts lack of footballing knowledge but determination to try and do well by the fans just by throwing money out in the wrong places. Stewart Donald made similar mistakes, was too eager to be popular in the eyes of the fans but one thing I have learned growing up as a sunderland fan is that if you're an owner/manager or anything along them lines employed by Sunderland football club A) make sure you have the right intentions
    B) Never read and take fan comments too seriously
Yes football in the north east of england is huge and the fanbase is arguably one of the better in the 92 but they (a majority not all) do not have a clue what they want or a clue about what has went wrong for us and how to fix it... they simply cry and call players shit, demand for managers to be sacked after 3 bad games, call every player on the roster shit despite barely watching any of our games, demand the signing of unrealistic targets that Sunderland could never realistically entice and I think the problem is because of the amazing support sunderland fans can bring in owners have been too scared to go against what the fans have demanded and wanted incase the fans stopped turning up to games and buying merchandise. The fans inability to understand we are not one of the biggest clubs in the country and have very little going for us in terms of drawing in top players from abroad or even different parts of England. The missmanament of the club is in plain sight for everyone to see but a large number of Sunderland fans should also hang their heads in shame. It will never change either even as we are a league one club and have been very average in that league for the last few seasons the comments from fans are ridiculous. Before Lee Johnson signed as manager our fans were claiming Eddie Howe or Sam Allardyce would be the best choices and the club should go for them... they still suggest we sign premier league / championship level players and dont understand why it's a ridiculous thing to say. Lack of knowledge in general has been a big part of Sunderlands problem for too long, in the club, outside of the club, on the pitch and off the pitch. The club where fans demand the signing of Will Grigg as he is a proven goalscorer so the owners pull out the stops to sign him and make everyone happy despite the fact he didnt fit into the managers play style then turned their back on him and denied the fact they ever wanted him 5 games in after he had unimpressive games... you can't make the stuff up we have went through and had to endure over the years and hopefully stability and compitence is coming soon. Good video - just as a random part of this, at 1:00 you compare Sunderland growing revenue by £4m in 7 years with palace, growing by £12m between 2013-15 - I think it's not quite like-for-like when you consider that Palace were promoted in 2013, so their 'growth' has just brought them into line with the likes of Sunderland, Swansea, Leicester, Stoke etc who are perennial lower PL clubs.
I mean it's all nicely explained, but I don't think that context is particularly relevant. I'd rather see what Stoke's growth was in that time for context, as both clubs have been in the PL the entire time.

exactly mate! I'm amazed more people don't see it this way. We've got a 49,000 seater stadium and have been in the Premier League for 10 consecutive seasons now including this one. We shouldn't be anywhere near the bottom three. Given how teams like Stoke, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Leicester have come up and done better than us that is simply unacceptable. Why are we not seen as a big club? Do people really think our fans are happy with constantly underachieving in the Premier League? Do people think we enjoy relegation battles. We hate it. If Leicester can win the league and Newcastle can keep a Champions League winning manager despite going down to the Championship then I think we have a right to expect much better here. I'm not saying win the Premier League because that'll never happen. But I means being comfortably in mid-table if not challenge for the top 10 consistently. David Moyes I believe is the right man and hopefully, along with Martin Bain, will sort this debt out & build things for a much better future.

As long as you avoid relegation you don't even need to make money. That seems messed up. As long as you are getting something like eight times your annual match day revenue from the TV companies you are sitting pretty. As I write this Sunderland are second bottom and on joint points with Hull and only ahead by 5 goals. In the EPL how many teams face straight relegation? If it's any more than 2 I think they are pretty much screwed now.

Ellis Short just another wealthy owner who didn’t know or understand football and made some poor decisions regarding the people he entrusted to run the club. He spent and lost an absolute fortune in the years he owned SAFC but to his credit when he sold the club in 2018 he took all the debt with him (about £180 million) leaving the club debt free (although now in the third tier). The people he sold to Donald and Methven were out of their depth and had no money of their own to invest. Finally KLD bough the club and their model means at least SAFC now have a plan.

Companies maybe don't think it's a fruitful market and the owners such as Ashley & Short aren't doing a great job making the club look attractive to potential businesses and abroad markets? constant bad press, managers getting sacked, poor signings and relegation battles which means the fans are frustrated and less likely to buy into advertisement.
