Welsh football club Wrexham have rocketed to stardom since being bought by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in February 2021.
But with all the focus on Wrexham’s new revenue streams expectations are that they can simply spend their way up the leagues. But is this really true?
Explained by 3, illustrated by Marco Bevilacqua.

Don’t let this video hide the fact that Joe Devine thinks the Wrexham stadium is a racehorse
😂😂 I thought I was trippin😂
😂
What a waste of money!😂
and he's not the only one, i seen their matches and news about the team in foreign broadcasts, and a lot of them say racehorse instead of racecourse
It's a very big horse
So the short answer is 55% of revenue, because that's what League 2 allows
Is their an upper limit on this because surely they'll be matching most championship sides revenue wise
@@yogsblogs I don't believe so, just 55% of revenue generated, I'm not sure how any funds from the owners are regulated
Ye
Which is a sizeable amount given their global reach. Meaning other league 2 teams are going to b*tch and moan even though it would be "different " if it was their club
Our last accounts are reported to be over 20 million. We can spent 55% of that turnover on wages. Player purchases aren’t necessarily included in that and neither is any money put into the club by investors, including the owners, as long as it isn’t given as a loan. In short we can spend over 10 million on wages. Bolton Wanderers last accounts showed a turnover of around 14 million for comparison. We don’t have any worries regarding spending rules or the ability to raise money to spend. Every game will be sold out next season… every game. We will also play a part in filling stadiums wherever we travel this coming season. It’s good for all.
its crazy that 4/5th tier football clubs operate in milions to be honest, english football is crazy
Those tiers here in the States.. make maybe a few thousand a month. 😂 Less then 50K a year. And I think I’m being generous.
Inflated with money is what they are
We don't divide the pyramid until the 6th tier so the 100th best team in England would be a National League playoff side
The talent pool for real football utterly dwarfs that of virtually all other sports combined, thus the athletic skill and talent spills over much further down the tiers of its associations' leagues than it does in every other professional sports association league tier system, hence the money involved is also that much greater.
Something to do with it being the most popular sport on the planet, or some such thing ...
Its part of the reason why the Premier League is the best in the world.
Spain's "B-side clubs" and the MLS's franchise model (no relegation) end up hindering growth and progress. Stories like Vardy, and hundreds of others who were recognized at small 4th tier sides and then getting gigs at higher tier clubs.
Its also why managers like Howe rise to the top. Sure, top 15 club PL sides have international managers but if you look from Championship level down. Its a lot of English managers, all getting on-the-job training in very competitive circumstances.
The Racehorse Ground - What a mare you've had Joe 😂😂
Mare 🤣 good one
Bit pathetic taking the first video down - doesn't seem like Tifo producers have a sense of humour.
Glad you’re using this style again🗣
The Racehorse Ground 17/07/23 - 17/07/23 GBNF
Hopefully they move up quickly. 20 year+ Notts County fan here and I'm glad we made promotion. We have a good team, and will be able to spend some money, but being able to keep up with Wrexham, Salford, etc. will be tough. 55% of revenue, for a team that makes even $100M USD at that level, is massive.
A lot of teams have proven throughout the years that "money" only gets you so far, sometimes even totally messing up a club, QPR is an example of that about 10 years ago. I am a plastic Wrexham fan, have my own club to worry about and havn´t spent that much time watching Wrexham, certainly not going to give them a dime, just following them from afar.
You either need A LOT of cash and someone who can spend all of it sensibly or an astute business model like f.ex. Brentford. Wrexham will need to sell and buy to keep afloat, while their 2 Hollywood protagonists may be rich they are not oil sheiks, it´s not a bottomless pit of money.
@@AurioDK Red Bull has gotten pretty far with just money. One advantage Wrexham has is that there's a lot of marketing that goes along with the money. Much of that marketing will probably be contingent on continued success. Being FC Hollywood gets you a foot in the door, but they need to become a story themselves to stay relevant. With how crowded the field is, this can be rough.
@@AurioDK
It seems Ryan Reynolds knows, that if you want to keep moving with Wrexham up the divisions of english football. You need to buy key players from like one higher division, that help your team a lot to move forward in the their own division, than do it like Chelsea buying somewhat good mediocre football players, that dont really help their team that much, because the American owner dosent know what he is doing. Paul Mullin was one of the good signing Wrexham did from last year with helping Wrexham a lot by scooring a lot goals, but by the time Wrexham will reach second division. Paul Mullin will propably be sold for another club or retire from football compleately, because he became too old at the age of 35 to play football anymore that well. This is why Wrexham will need to keep buying better players as they move forward and selling the worse players, so they can keep moving forward to become bigger club and have one day chance to reach Premier League, that would make the Wrexham fans pround. Imagine like 30 years to future where Wrexham wins the Premier League and that would really make Wrexham fans pround and thankful for Ryan Reynolds.
Salford will never get up there unless they move grounds. Moor Lane is too small and the surrounding area hasn't got the infrastructure to support a bigger stadium.. Traffic. would be anightmare.
Salford don't have the fanbase and TV series popularity, they can't spend like Wrexham. If they do so, the points will be deducted due to EFL financial regulations. I think Notts will do fine against Salford.
Nice summary going off the information that you have access to. I can't wait to hear the equivalent explanation by Humphrey and Sean Harvey at some point. They've played it and planned it so well. With the timing of the sponsor and advertising contracts ending and the documentary, along with the fact they did secure promotion. And now that they're in the NL and are in charge of their own streaming packages, that side will also grow. Not a Wrexham fan, but enjoying watching something being done very well from afar and looking forward to seeing what they can achieve.
Can you make a video about the rivalry of Brighton owner Tony Bloom and Brentford owner Matthew Bentham
Don't think they will need a further investor any time soon. The key will be to stay in L2 at least (promotion is the dream scenario) and bolster their revenues. Attendance/ticket sales will rise once the new stand is opened in 24/25. Keeping L2 status allows them to surge forward financially.
i find it ironic how if any owners put many into signings, the opposition fans cry "oh look their owners are splashing money" but then they cry if their own owners aren't spending much. Look at United, they cry about how much City spends, but then they also accuse the Glazers for not doing the same
Answer to the question in the title. 'We don't have a clue.'
Actually, the revenues are now around the $20m pound level. That allows for over 11m in wages. Only one big signing and the foster contract will leave them plenty in the bank for the January window. Expect them to reinforce with a big signing.
how did you get to that number? do we know the income from united etc..?
@@EverGameStudios I read somewhere and I think it's officially announced by the club. It was the turnover of 20M not revenues .
@namkun78 thx for explaining, turnover is very different then revenues btw 😉
We also signed a CB from the championship already. I think it was a free transfer but more to come for sure. It's going to be a good season for us Wrexham fans

The fact that I got an ad for the Wrexham docuseries right before this video...
Such great reporting, considering in May 2023 it was reported Wrexham made well over 9 million pounds just off the documentary. These numbers are laughably outdated.
Im surprised that they "only" got 1 million from sponsors with the kind of sponsor names they have
I think there’s a sponsorship comparison element for the league they’re in. Given some of these sponsors are Ryan’s own companies (or at least he’s a part-owner), they can’t have over inflated sponsorship deals, otherwise it could be seen as skirting the rules surrounding an owner just pumping as much cash into the club as they like. For example, Man City have been in hot water over some of the club’s sponsors (also owned by the City owners) over-inflating the sponsorship sums they’re giving to the club, compared with other like-for-like deals towards the top of the EPL.
They're just gaining mass
Cultivating it, if you will
@@C-OBrienI need to start harvesting mass
If a club has a owner that will pay for the financial losses then it won't be the worst thing but it can be a problem too.
Why’d u reupload twice now?
They deleted the last one. I don't think they meant it
why did the previous video get deleted?
They should go after a big player born in Wrexham. Neco Williams, Harry Wilson, Tom Lawrence etc
That is a wonderful idea. Really, I think that would be exciting and extremely satisfying for the area and, of course, for the people all around there. Thank you for the thought. I really hope someone will make that happen!!!
Clubs like Wrexham and their success really aren’t fairytale stories given the spending involved.
They are, not everyday 2 millionaries owners that are also Hollywood actors buy a 5th division club. I mean, just imagine what would it mean for wrexham fans to reach the premier league.
This take is so tired...
"Clubs like Wrexham and their success really aren't fairytale stories given the spending involved."
I can see that. However, what's amazing is to see a team like Wrexham FC bounce back by having terrific owners. Spending is a big part of it, but they've done nearly everything right. That's the Fairytale.
There are many stories of new owners buying a club and splashing cash everywhere and failing. Rob and Ryan have been very reserved and smart about what they've spent vs what they could have spent.
Every fan wishes their team had owners like Rob and Ryan.
it’s not a fairytale story, it’s like winning the lottery and starting a business, then calling it a miracle when your business does way better than someone else’s who puts way less money into it
Luton then
Its interesting you bring up other investors.👍👍👍👍
It's wierd that owners would charge interest on their loan which is higher than the bas rate. Just taking profit out the club. I know then need to earn money from their investment, but surely growing the club is the best way to do that
You mean they haven't poured money into the club in excess of that 45k? Hmm. Without that investment the club would still be circling the drain. The grounds was never going to be updated by the city. They've also invested in the community around the grounds. So please don't recycle Glazer rhetoric as if they aren't managing the club for both short and long term growth.
The base rate is set by bank of England, this rate only applies to other banks.commercial interest are much higher.also providing loan instead of straight up cash infusion ensures that their investment can be recouped even when they bring new investors.
This is, in all likelihood, just a bridging loan (aka construction loan) to get the stadium up to the new standard. When completed the club will refinance and pay out the owners' original loan.
Thumbnail art got better
It's not the money that will allow R&R to boost Wrexham faster and higher than normal, it's the prestige and exposure a player would gain playing for them.
The thumbnail got Ryan Reynolds looking like a mix of Ryan gosling and Frank Lampard

Being from the USA how many leagues are there in the United Kingdom is it 4
U.K.? That's 4 different countries, all with their own league structure. So a lot. In England top 4 leagues (92 clubs) are you can argue top professional leagues. Below them is a mix of professional with semi & amateur and that goes down from 5 to 11 levels I think. And then there's even more below that.
Not including local rec leagues that are outside the pyramid.

Your comparing them to prem teams that's why. Compare Wrexham to their actual competition like Notts County and you will find that the financial gap is very large.

I thought that was a bit much--but I take it as a general comment on the aggressive marketing/commodification of the brand. Like how the doc is a doc but also clearly a commercial, the story is underdog--for an on the bubble of promotion team before the buy-in by well resourced glamours backers, etc... The fairy tale is the story (and maybe reality), but it's a well-researched investment is also reality. And that came first.
