NEW Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio Review! A Final Blow To The BMW M3 & AMG C63

  • The Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio is back for 2024! This updated car gets key changes to make it faster, more comfortable, and even more of a threat to the G80 BMW M3 and hybrid Mercedes-AMG C63 S E Performance. Alfa's turbocharged V6 super saloon is in its twilight years, but that doesn't mean it can't throw one final 520hp punch at its rivals...
    In this review, Sam Sheehan gets to drive the car on the roads of Oxfordshire to see how its wider 600Nm torque band affects real-world performance, before exploring how its GTA-sourced limited slip differential influences handling. Sam also shows you the Giulia Quadrifoglio's infotainment tech upgrades, and compares its practicality to those aforementioned German competitors.
    Priced from £78,195, the 2024 car is more expensive than before, but still undercuts the M3 by more than £4,000, and the hybrid (and therefore more technologically complicated) C63 by a full £20k! Theoretically, the Alfa still holds a key advantage because you needn't spend too much on options to unlock its full potential, whereas both the BMW and Mercedes can quickly surpass their starting prices with must-have add-ons. The Giulia becomes even more enticing when you see the prices here: www.cinch.co.uk/used-cars/alf...
    If the Giulia Quadrifoglio is too extreme, expensive and not practical enough for you, then it's definitely worth checking out their more sensible yet fun to drive offerings, such as
    - the Alfa Romeo Giula 280 Veloce or TB Super: www.cinch.co.uk/used-cars/alf...
    - and the more practical Alfa Romeo Stelvio 280 Speciale and 210 Milano

    In dec. 2021 I considered following new cars to purchase: G80 M3/M4, M340i, Audi Rs3 sedan, Audi Rs5, Mercedes AMG A35 sedan, Mercedes C43 AMG, G87 BMW M2 (didn't waned to wait 2 years for a lanuch), Ford Mustang 5.0, Chevrolet Camaro 6.2 SS. It all came down between M3, M340i (down on power but wickedly fast and I got a damn good deal on one) and Giulia Quadrifoglio. Went with Giulia and it was best decision I ever made. Would I be happy in an M3 or M340i? Absolutely. Did they give you the driving felling like Giulia? Not even close. M340i felt almost digital how it handled, especially in the long fast corners. Like you were placed on a railroad cart with artifical akward feedback. Giulia was so much more engaging and the feedback feel is second to none. Truly a future classic and I would buy it again in a heartbeat.

      When you say "M340i felt almost digital how it handled, especially in the long fast corners" - is this from track usage? On the road I hardly feel any issue on handling, but rather the aggressive setup of the car, like it think it is on the track and want to fly off.

      Touch screens are a solution in search of a problem. On phones, tick. To use a phone you look at the screen. To drive a car well and safely you look at the road and take your eyes off it minimally. Touch screens in cars are such a dumb idea I wonder at the intelligence of the car execs who make the decisions to put them in. I only ever hear motoring journos say they wish the touchscreen-equipped car they're driving had reals knobs and buttons. I've never heard anyone say that a touchscreen has improved things.

    Had a Giulia QV and now have a G80 M3, some inaccurate information….
    don’t let the manufacturer claims fool you the QV is actually just as heavy as the M3 - have a look at actual owner weighing results.
    Both are excellent cars and I’d have either tbf, the m3 is far more capable and tunable but despite being the faster and far more effective (and better engineered) car it doesn’t feel as special somehow.
    To anyone considering one I’d certainly try both before deciding.

    • @nessuno5403
      @nessuno5403 Před 3 měsíci +1

      Been down this road, driving both cars on commutes, fast roads and track. The BMW is more thoroughly engineered and fast but artificially numb. The Alfa is the truer driving machine with real sound and character. It is a smooth operator relative to the more explosive and boring M car.

    • @stephenlongfield8492
      @stephenlongfield8492 Před 3 měsíci +3

      @@nessuno5403each to their own but I disagree. The M car is far from boring and the harder you push the better it responds, the Alfa prefers a 7/10ths drive and when pushed harder comes somewhat unhappy.

    • @nessuno5403
      @nessuno5403 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@stephenlongfield8492 let me rephrase - it is boring because it is now more GT and easier plus more artificial to drive faster. The Giulia is alive albeit more so above 3000rpm. Give me real sound, a more agile chassis, better steering and suspension anytime. BMW is not boring to traffic light sprint champions and drifters. In the bends, it leaves to be desired with its girth too.

    • @stephenlongfield8492
      @stephenlongfield8492 Před 3 měsíci +2

      @@nessuno5403that’s the point though, it’s not more GT at all. It’s far more rewarding to drive hard and on the limit.
      The chassis is leagues better than the Alfa and it corners better. The damping at higher speeds on the Alfa is too soft and it loses composure. The e diff is clumsy and it often ends up spinning one wheel as it struggles to lock at the appropriate time.
      The front active splitter is a constant nuisance with poor ground clearance even at standard ride it constantly touches the floor on more challenging bumpy roads, I have no issues on the same roads in the M3.
      Sound as stick I agree the Alfa is louder and less artificial, I’ve simply coded the sound through the speakers off and installed a midpipe and the sound is not only improved but to my ears better than the Alfa.
      Another weak point on the Alfa is the heavy torque reduction when in anything other than race mode (which also deactivates the traction/stability plus stops you from having the softest setting of suspension.
      As I said, it’s still a great car but it’s in a class behind the G80 in honesty.

    • @nessuno5403
      @nessuno5403 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @@stephenlongfield8492 I consider the G series M cars more GT (had an F87) because they are easier and too easy to drive fast for anyone 😴 Anyway, you lost me at "e-diff" for the Alfa because you obviously don't own and have not driven one with the new setup 🙂 And, despite all, it says a lot that a 2016 project still matches and is preferred by many over the newer German obese offerings. When I walked off the G80, I also praised the B58 because the S58 is not as characterful as the S55 was. And with a worse ZF vs fun DCT it again adds (sorry) boredom.

    Way more fun to drive than an M3....Alfa gives you the power in all its rawest form....BMWs are fast but they all feel like someone is turning up a knob when pressing the gas....BUT ALL THAT FUN COMES AT A COST. Recently changed a drive belt on a Giulia Quad....the job pays 7 hours...whole front of the car has to come apart......INSANE. AND ITS STELVIO QUAD SISTER IS EVEN WORSE!

    Alfa Romeo lost to both BMW and Mercedes for the past 40 years. I hope with their new range of sedans and SUVs, (with each generations of Mercedes and BMWs looking same) the dynamics will be for Alfa Rmoeos in the next 20 years. They are "mini Ferraris" and every guy car should get one.

      Ah yes. BMW have done a lot of work to calibrate the same ZF gearbox but something tells me that their goal was more towards performance whereas Alfa Romeo might have been going for a more characterful gear change?

      @ItaThe3rd Před měsícem

      @cinch Hey Jamil,
      I think that the handling is very sharp for a saloon car, and the gearbox is smooth and quick. Rear wheel driving is always preferable for me, but this car is quite dangerous when you get out of corners when you put it in race mode (which I like, haha). I thought the new mechanical differential (there was an electronic one in the old model) would make the car more predictable (again, a good thing for safety, but not when you take it to the truck/mountains) but I haven't noticed any change. Other than the driving experience, the sound of the engine is great, but the Turbo vibrations and sound are special. It's not even close to the sounds you get from the 911 for comparisent. The turbo sounds like the most beautiful fart I've ever heard. Thanks for the review, it was great!

  • @PaulAndBiscuit
    @PaulAndBiscuit Před 22 dny

    Great car, but it is not a "final blow" to those cars, I'm not sure it is even on BMW and Mercedes radar. With the lightness I would take it to a weigh bridge as Alfa massively understates the weight of these cars.

    • @uksharif
      @uksharif Před 3 měsíci

      @cinch a 4 cylinder and bland styling just doesn't work. The C63 has always been a bit of a muscle car. A 6-cylinder hybrid would have worked better. Otherwise just go full electric and throw millions of horsepower at it.

    Good review but inaccurate: the M3 Competition ZF is worse than this Alfa's and the M3 CS have been retuned to improve it; the new suspension setup is GTA, not the LSD; you're wrong about a different power band and driving feel. Same torque and 0-100km/h acceleration confirm it, and top speed is only microscopically higher to make believe the extra power adds something. Anyway, only the EU, UK and China get +10hp.

    • @cinch
      @cinch  Před 3 měsíci

      Thanks! Perhaps it's the subtle changes to the rest of the car that ensured it, but the engine felt stronger and freer through the mid-range on our drive - and the Alfa explanation was a tweaked engine map. Either way, especially with an Akrapovic exhaust, the engine is a delight 😍 You're absolutely right about the LSD, I was so giddy with excitement when noting down the changes to the car that I managed to group the LSD in with the GTA chassis parts. Oops. Thankfully, the result is the same: driving heaven! Glad to see we have such knowledgeable people watching our videos 😁 /Sam

      @@cinch apologies, but it's easy to get excited and be wrong when just test driving a car for a limited time instead of owning it :) Press release and esteemed automotive reporters such as Italy's Quattroruote confirm no noticeable power delivery change. And the Akrapovic on this car changes only the tone but not volume of the 690T engine note.

    I had a Giulietta clover leaf and loved the way it drove. It was a nightmare to maintain though, had to take the drivers wheel and arch lining off to reach the oil filter..... which was handily placed above the drive shaft! It was also near impossible to change the cabin filter because the pedals were in the way, the lazy Italian %$%$%$%'s put zero effort in when building right hand drive cars.
