  • In this video, Mark Tachna shows how to transfer an audio cassette tape using a PC. He is using the Ion Tape2PC deck (no longer manufactured) but similar decks are available to use (links below). He is also using Audacity which is a free software download. Mark shows you a simple yet affective way to transfer your audio cassette tapes.

Hi Mark, interesting topic for sure. My preferred workflow for cassette tape transfers is to play the tape from a good quality vintage deck, run it through an external single-ended denoiser and then into a USB audio interface. I record to Audacity in 48kHz/24 bit and apply some gentle EQ'ing to open up the sound of the tape. The signal-to-noise ratio of this setup far exceeds the dynamic range of cassette tape, but it sure does not hurt either. I am not familiar with the USB tape deck you are showing, but I believe that modern-day cassette mechanisms are considered to be of a lesser quality than those of a well-kept vintage deck from the late '80ies to early '90ies.

I believe that modern day anything is of lesser quality than what was built in the past. I had a really nice tape deck back in the 80's and I wish I still had it! Maybe I will find one and give it a shot with transfers. However, the only transfers I am legally allowed to do is of family memories, not professionally recorded store bought media. In my opinion a high end tape deck would be a bit over kill for what I do. But, it would be fun to transfer my personal collection of Talking Heads!

Hello Mark … if I sent you an audio cassette would you transfer and provide the transferred audio to me and would I be able to upload to CZcams to share with others?
    Cost?
