Thanks to this comparison, I've listened to three headphones, and I think the DT770 Pro has a kind of '90s "Radio" sound with vocals forward and no stage. The DT700 Pro X has more details and a modern sound with a stage and enhanced sub-bass. The sound of the DT770 Pro X is very similar to that of the DT700 Pro X but with less ambient detail and bass.

Beyerdynamic makes their stuff look more like a watch with every release. Recently I saw a broken pair of DT700 - the plastic headband was torn to pieces. I was wondering if I could swap just the top for parts from DT770 or Superlux HD660 and keep the lovely earcups and yokes.
Meanwhile I bought yet another pair of DT770. It's a lovely 2005 limited edition in blue. I've never seen one in the wild. It's missing it's shiny "ears" and one side doesn't have much bass unfortunately but with this model you just keep looking for another old pair and swap parts, as you said. I already found a donor for drivers. I'm still on a lookout for the ears but maybe I can craft a new pair out of a spoon or something. The slider that you designed is maybe the most popular 3D printed part in headphone category. There are like 5 variations circulating online. My favourite one has a channel for the wire. There was also one with a holder for a tiny BT receiver or mp3 player like Cowon E2 or ipod shuffle.

I think James our technician has done a headband swap and fitted a DT770 headband on some 700 pro x earcups for a customer - Apparently it fits nicely. It is a bit tricky getting the old headband off the 700 pro X but I think we have a video showing how to get it off

    • @rhalfik

@@CustomCans That's good news. Getting it off was the least of all problems - someone already did it and with great enthusiasm :-) It snapped in 3 places.

Got the DT 770 Pro X in the mail today. First impressions after a few songs are better bass, and brighter than DT 770 Pro 80 ohm. I haven't compared them side by side yet. I just hope they're not too bright for me.

From that little listening test I really enjoyed your 770 pro X. For me the basic 250 Ohm 770s peaky highs are too much and dynamics sound too compressed overall (Worked with them for 17 years) Also, with worn pads the base seems to become hollow at least in my experience. The 80 Ohm being worst than the 250 in that regard. On the other hand, the 700 pro X with their stellar 45 are something else. Far superior sound imo. Stock, they have a bit too much dampening for my taste though. I replaced their tick fleece pads for older foam pads I had from an old pair of 990s. They really opened up without being too much like 770s. The build is also better but I do give it to the 770s for comfort and weight. 770s might also have better technical capacities in regards of imaging. Might have to do with the fact they don't isolate noise as much as the 700 Pro X.

You would be surprised how much peoples tastes differ. It also varies quite a lot by country, perhaps it is partially a cultural thing. I remember in the 2000s SONY releasing a load of audio equipment re-tuned for the UK listening preferences, they probably did it for other countries as well.

The 770 Pro X are inbetween the 770's Pros & the 700 Pro X...the 700 Pro X's are fantastic for music or CZcams, pc etc...my 770 Pro 80ohm headphones are relegated to phone duty now,my phone can easily drive 80ohms & sound better for the higher impedence...the 700 Pro X's are only 40ohm so plenty volume & high quality tunes & monitoring when connected to an pc or interface....i use a PreSonus 1810c....
