      @@CustomCans @CustomCans I can imagine. They look stylish and are quite comfortable as well. I'm still curious how you would mod these though. Besides a balanced mini-XLR I can't think of much to improve on the 900 Pro X tbh. It's not that they have the bump in the high ends that the older open models have that you might want to compensate for.

    Love the driver design and the mini XLR jack. I just did a DT 990 Mini XLR conversion today and it was a Pita getting the tiny wires soldered and creating space for the connector. I just wish this didn't come at a $100 premium since it doesn't really cost them that much to create these. The plastic headband is kinda disappointing. What I love on the 770/990 models is how it's just a piece of spring steel with padding, so nothing that can actually break. The only thing that tends to break on those models are the plastic bits on the side for the clicker mechanism.
    So glad that they added a removable cable though, that was my biggest gripe with the 770/990 series.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, they are trying to go for a slightly different market with these. I quite like the "built like a tank" look of the DT990 and 770 but it is not for everyone ;)

    Awesome work you make Jason!!! looking forward to hear your opinion about the 700 pro X and how they sound. DMS says little audio detail, due to that thick pad in front of the driver, very thick. Those proprietary earpads, not my cup of tea. Maybe an adapter is possible to normal pads? I would really need these balanced, my amp no good SE. I would prefer though, double 3 pin, or just like Audeze, to share the cable. Or regular double 3.5mm jack... cable to both sides not bad, one side much cooler, of course, but double side to make it more "compatible" with existing cables... much more sustainable, right? Thanks a million.

By any chance have you found a way to remove the hinges? My DT700's hinges seem to be slightly loose compared to the first day I got them (I could feel a very slight wiggle with a bit of twisting force), wondering if anyone is experiencing the same thing? Intresting insight, thanks! I have 2 questions: So you close some holes of the 990 and 1990 to get better bass response, did i get this right? Do you have any thoughts on the TYGR 300 (the "gaming" 990) ?

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety +1

      I probably over simplified it a bit - the 990 and 1990 also have a lot of the inside of the earcup closed - closing up the holes will probably give a little more sub bass but you will lose something somewhere else in the frequency range - it is one of those things you have to do a lot of trial and error with to get right. I do have some TYGR 300 on the shelf for a future video but it may not be until after xmas now as we are very busy at the moment

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety

    It's interesting to me how Beyer seems to use almost exclusively front damping in their headphones (admittedly I've only seen this and the 770), when that's the opposite of my approach when modding stuff. I like to do low volume, high absorption rear damping and then keep the front as clear as possible - I'm not an engineer by any means so it's just a gut feeling in my case, but I find it just sounds more natural with the rear damping approach.
    In my 770, I removed the little cotton-felt-ish ring around the driver "stand" in the cup and lined the back and sides instead using different materials, which seemed to clear up the sound a decent bit while also cutting sibilance.
    For context, I started modding headphones with Fostex' TH/Denon's AH-D line of headphones and found the stock "just shove a big wad of cotton on top of the driver" approach to be really unsatisfactory, hence the experimentation with lining the cups instead. Seems to translate well to the 770 so far, though I am definitely wanting to experiment more there also.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety

      on the 770, the driver has a plastic disc on the back of the magnet with some damping in but yes... I prefer to get stuff inside the earcup and leave the front open on a lot of headphones as well
      The 880 and 990 have more damping inside the earcup. Here is a vid you may find interesting
      czcams.com/video/FplFbUDVqm8/video.html

    • @JennyDarukat
      @JennyDarukat Před 2 lety

      @@CustomCans just had a look at the video - very interesting how subtle but meaningful some of the changes there are, just makes me want to play around with my 770 even more. you mentioned a connection between the little crown stand of the 770 driver and the bass, is that because it transfers more force to the rest of the chamber for extra resonance/low end rumble? makes me wonder if this headphone could actually be modded to become almost the opposite of what it is stock, between that and cup damping (and ofc pad swaps)
      man if I had the money to throw around I'd get another one or two just for modding them different directions and a stock one for reference.. definitely can see why you've stuck with them for so long. this hobby isn't for the faint of heart/those with a dry bank account

      @@CustomCans but the dt 900 it is just 48 ohm and the k5 pro have so much power is that ok ?

      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety

      Yeh just don't crank the power until they blow ;) We were using them with some big powerful amps, just start with the volume low and bring it up to your desired level and you will be fine but I suspect they can handle quite a lot of power before they blow...

    ya and No 3th party earpads for DT700 and 900 Pro X also i just talked to Dekoni they said they are Not working on any pads for them Beyerdynamic Dosn't allow them
    which is very stupid btw the headband on the DT700 and 900 Pro X is thinner and not as comfortable as DT770, 880 and 990 atleast on DT1990 and 1770 you can swap the headband with DT770 headband plus you can use 3th party earpads Beyerdynamic just made these new headphones Big No No for me

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před 2 lety

      I have not seen any 3rd part pads yet. I know from experience that there needs to be a lot of headphones out in the wild before it becomes cost effective to design,test and make 3rd party pads for them. So... you may see some eventually if these sell well. From what I remember the headbands are not interchangeable but you could probably wrap a cover round the headband.

    I thought you bought this pair of headphones yourself? then you can do with it what you want. Beyerdynamic can ask for what they want, you don't have to listen to them.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před rokem

      We are now allowed to play with them and have modded ones available for sale. But... Back when this was filmed we were not allowed to stock them as they were exclusive to certain retailers. It is always best to play nicely with your suppliers if you fancy getting a discount off stuff in the future ;)

      They asked me nicely not to mess with them for a while. They have done me a lot of favours in the past so I was OK with that. They have just got in tough and said we can now start modding them so we may be doing some work on them soon

    had some DT990s a few years back and though they felt like junk and sounded meh
    Now the Hifiman Planars are my jam.
    Maybe it could be fun to give Beyer another change. I also have not yet had the HD600 to listen to but I feel like they dont match my library anyways.

    • @CustomCans
      @CustomCans  Před rokem

      Yeh, you may like the DT900, they have a more balanced sound than the 990. Or if you are looking at HD600, we do a mod for them to give them more sub bass and bass detail
