- At TEDxUtopia, the question was asked: What would leadership in Utopia look like? To start with, imagine the best leader you have ever worked with. How did he or she get to become this type of leader? Leadership lecturer and former corporate executive Lars Sudmann argues that it's likely that they learned to overcome the "leadership formula of doom" and then developed themselves as a leader. In this funny and invigorating talk Lars walks us through the personal journeys of great leaders, shows lessons from the golden age of leadership and shares 3 strategies on self-leadership to develop yourself into a "Utopia leader”.
Lars Sudmann is a leadership advisor and award-winning lecturer. He studies and researches what makes the most advanced organizations and leaders successful - and then he shares that knowledge with the world. He has had a business career of more than 10 years in management and finance with Procter & Gamble, e.g. as the Chief Financial Officer of Belgium, and he has lived and worked in Europe and Asia. Trends/Tendance, the Belgian Business Magazine, and the BBC have called on his expertise. Additionally, he is currently a university lecturer in Aachen and Braunschweig (both Germany).
What does leadership in Utopia look like? How does leadership work in a future ultra-networked world? And is there one leadership ideal that we can all strive towards, and if yes, what is holding us back from achieving it? In this highly engaging talk, leadership expert Lars Sudmann will dive into the past, present and future of excellent leadership.

The best leaders make people feel as if they’re not being led at all. Their mere presence inspires action and purpose.
Just recalling the key points
To lead others we need to first start by leading ourselves. (40% of time)
Self leadership consists of
1) Self Awareness - Recall who is leader you like/don't like. Compare their actions with yours and adapt.
2) Self reflection - 2 to 5 minutes a day
3) Self resolution - If getting frustrated, gauge the importance of the issue and act accordingly
Thanks for this summary
I really agree with the notion that in order to lead other we must have self awareness and self-reflection, you must understand 1st why you want to lead others, this is how you will truly understand what type of leader you want to become but most of all it will allow for the self reflection that is necessary to determine if ones actions are consistant with that of a good leader.
You made excellent points about what it takes to be a leader, I don't think that eveyone is meant to lead others. Truly, I believe that self awareness and self reflection are key to gauge whether one is developing themsleves to be a leader that others can stand behind, a person has to know themselves in order to aviod becoming a leader who will ultimately leading others badly.
Thanks a lot for your comments, very interesting builds. Discovering about oneself whether you want and can be a leader and acting accordingly is important step in one's personal journey.
Yeah thanks or whatever but I have questions... what’s your name Mexicano or candiqndian because I have spent my life away trying to figure what ur name is pronounced
The best leaders are givers, they are caring people. False leaders , which are most want to be referred to as leaders are looking for an applause and do it for power. They want to micromanage thinking they are leaders. But It is exactly like parenting, a good true leader is like a loving caring parent.

So much BS....those g@y cliches are worn out. True leaders take and take and focus on self. If you think otherwise you are delusional.
I'm going to be a leader I try my best to lookout for everyone we all have to be on the same page and I can't wait
This is a great talk- because when it comes to leadership the hardest person to lead is yourself-. If you lead yourself well you can lead a nation. Thanks

Can someone please clarify this comment? Thanks
Lead yourself by leading by example. When you lead by example you set a standard and culture that your peers will see and follow leaving them no excuses. This has worked best for me, always come with a mindset that you’re going to out work everyone and it becomes contagious, creating a friendly competitive environment. I call this a winning culture but it all starts from the top.
Leaders are listeners. The most successful leaders know to ask questions and not to answer them. Those who don’t rush to give advice are usually the most trustworthy. Those who stop long enough to really listen will invariably give the best advice, if they give any at all.
absolutely agree
Self-leadership can be very difficult to develop, especially when we are so busy already leading! However, it is so important to break through this barrier and seek that self-leadership within ourselves in order to positively lead others. By being aware of what we want to be and don't want to be, we can better understand what we should and shouldn't be putting to practice.
Thanks, great point
Communication is key.
You won’t become an owner unless you go through it and know.
Can’t order if you’re not willing to do it. You’ll be speaking to the wind and it shall go through.
Your first sentence hit me in the ‘nads and I don’t even have those. Exactly that.
Love it !
1) You Must Always Learn & Improve ... All the leaders are leaders improve your knowledge , take courses ... Three Rules for that 1) It doesn't matter where you came from it only matters where you are going 2) If you want your life to get better , first you must get better 3) you can learn anything that you want to learn .
Our world desperately needs great leadership
Many people simply assume that rising in ranks is the same as being a "leader". A leader will take on a senior role in an organization (sooner or later) but not all senior personnel are leaders! It is important to comprehensively understand the ‘mechanics’ of being a leader. Good talk. Food for thought for sure…
Apart from motivational lectures, it will really help me to learn English more frequently.
PLATO the great thinker wrote...THY YOURSELF...means know yourself....for leadership...one need to search is./her leader within...no style is good or bad...you have know your leader within....
Self awareness
Self Reflection
Self Regulation
need to be practice..
One of the best video on leadership I ever come across.
Thanks for the summary, really great to hear you liked the talk
Self Awareness, Self Reflection and Self Regulation, 3 qualities of a leader
Know Thyself ( know yourself) by Plato is a wonderful philosophy followed in self leadership. Self Reflection, Self Awareness and Self Resolution are the key to self leadership. Thank you sir
Great talk! Self-leadership is the starting point of leadership. The 3 steps make good sense and the tools are quite practical. Thank you!
Leadership is one of the highly regarded qualities of an individual to be successful in life. Leading life positively in all aspects can influence others to follow his good deeds and examples
Before leading others you need to lead yourself first ! Thanks for Sharing.
Fantastic quote from Peter Drucker!
It is so true, and self leadership can create wonderful opportunities for all concerned.
Very encouraging and motivating lecture on "Great leadership starts with self-leadership".
Transparency, Inspection, Adaptation
very interesting presentation, basically the outcome is : before leading others Self leadership has to come first by self awareness by self character trait check, self reflection by doing 5 minutes self reflection to raise the compassion level for others , and self regulation by self reframing
Beautiful conclusion, a simple summary of why leadership is important in the first place. Thank you for this 👏
You are very welcome
So true .Or just preaching... Great great talk . Thank you, bless you. All your dreams come true.
I like the idea of "leadership" as self mastery / + lead by example and take care of self/+others. But leadership starts with You
Leadership is not about rank, it is about the mindest, u need to think for others from any kind of perspectives. When u lead an organization, ensure that u internalise your mind to embrace other's flaw by giving encouragement and not humiliation. When u start to rage due to unsatisfactory, hold for seconds to set your situation in a favourable position before u talk out. Hence, you might be a likeable person and eventually many people start to conform you as a true leader.
Great talk . Some of the leaders become leader because the majority choose them but deep down, the choosen leader does not know how to lead themselves first .
Every one should know you can’t lead a team without leading yourself first especially lead them to greatness

You're really a good thought bringer into this world Sire.
Many thanks :-)
Great video, first we need to be able to effectively take control of our own universe before being able to bring others into it and effectively lead others.
We all need to start with ourselves - it's like when you are on an airplane and they tell you to put your oxygen mask on before helping others with theirs. To my reflection, I add the question "what is my intention today?". Reframing also an amazing tool / technique
Great addition, thank you for your comment
Informative lecture.Thank you.
Fantasic! Good words to take to a good heart
Thanks, glad you liked the talk
You are very welcome, glad that you saw the video after this discussion with your friend

Absolutely agree this is very imp. Thanks for sharing
What an interesting perspective on leadership! During COVID, I made sure to regularly connect with my team and reassure them that their hard work will meet success. As their boss, I believe that I should always make sure that they're not only working for the company but also for themselves.
Hope to see more awesome content! :)

very nice. Great thoughts and awesome presentation
Shawn Quixote one piece fan lol DOFFY is a good leader
Definitely food for thought on this video
Having to little time and dealing with people are things everyone deals with, but few people actually have power. The cookie experiment with the supervisor eating more of them is quite interesting, they already value themselves higher in a small time frame. If people could practice having power, it would give them insight on how to properly use it.
There's a great saying in my family. To learn to lead, first learn to follow.
Great insights Love it

my self leadership is based of my energy levels and when I walk EVERYWHERE and ALL DAY at work you tend to do almost 20 plus miles a day. then you add in all the lifting and you kinda wanna do nothing when the chance comes
