  • At TEDxUtopia, the question was asked: What would leadership in Utopia look like? To start with, imagine the best leader you have ever worked with. How did he or she get to become this type of leader? Leadership lecturer and former corporate executive Lars Sudmann argues that it's likely that they learned to overcome the "leadership formula of doom" and then developed themselves as a leader. In this funny and invigorating talk Lars walks us through the personal journeys of great leaders, shows lessons from the golden age of leadership and shares 3 strategies on self-leadership to develop yourself into a "Utopia leader”.
Lars Sudmann is a leadership advisor and award-winning lecturer. He studies and researches what makes the most advanced organizations and leaders successful - and then he shares that knowledge with the world. He has had a business career of more than 10 years in management and finance with Procter & Gamble, e.g. as the Chief Financial Officer of Belgium, and he has lived and worked in Europe and Asia. Trends/Tendance, the Belgian Business Magazine, and the BBC have called on his expertise. Additionally, he is currently a university lecturer in Aachen and Braunschweig (both Germany).
What does leadership in Utopia look like? How does leadership work in a future ultra-networked world? And is there one leadership ideal that we can all strive towards, and if yes, what is holding us back from achieving it? In this highly engaging talk, leadership expert Lars Sudmann will dive into the past, present and future of excellent leadership.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

    Just recalling the key points
To lead others we need to first start by leading ourselves. (40% of time)
    Self leadership consists of
    1) Self Awareness - Recall who is leader you like/don't like. Compare their actions with yours and adapt.
    2) Self reflection - 2 to 5 minutes a day
    3) Self resolution - If getting frustrated, gauge the importance of the issue and act accordingly

I really agree with the notion that in order to lead other we must have self awareness and self-reflection, you must understand 1st why you want to lead others, this is how you will truly understand what type of leader you want to become but most of all it will allow for the self reflection that is necessary to determine if ones actions are consistant with that of a good leader.

You made excellent points about what it takes to be a leader, I don't think that eveyone is meant to lead others. Truly, I believe that self awareness and self reflection are key to gauge whether one is developing themsleves to be a leader that others can stand behind, a person has to know themselves in order to aviod becoming a leader who will ultimately leading others badly.

The best leaders are givers, they are caring people. False leaders , which are most want to be referred to as leaders are looking for an applause and do it for power. They want to micromanage thinking they are leaders. But It is exactly like parenting, a good true leader is like a loving caring parent.

Lead yourself by leading by example. When you lead by example you set a standard and culture that your peers will see and follow leaving them no excuses. This has worked best for me, always come with a mindset that you’re going to out work everyone and it becomes contagious, creating a friendly competitive environment. I call this a winning culture but it all starts from the top.

Leaders are listeners. The most successful leaders know to ask questions and not to answer them. Those who don’t rush to give advice are usually the most trustworthy. Those who stop long enough to really listen will invariably give the best advice, if they give any at all.

Self-leadership can be very difficult to develop, especially when we are so busy already leading! However, it is so important to break through this barrier and seek that self-leadership within ourselves in order to positively lead others. By being aware of what we want to be and don't want to be, we can better understand what we should and shouldn't be putting to practice.

Many people simply assume that rising in ranks is the same as being a "leader". A leader will take on a senior role in an organization (sooner or later) but not all senior personnel are leaders! It is important to comprehensively understand the ‘mechanics’ of being a leader. Good talk. Food for thought for sure…

Leadership is not about rank, it is about the mindest, u need to think for others from any kind of perspectives. When u lead an organization, ensure that u internalise your mind to embrace other's flaw by giving encouragement and not humiliation. When u start to rage due to unsatisfactory, hold for seconds to set your situation in a favourable position before u talk out. Hence, you might be a likeable person and eventually many people start to conform you as a true leader.

The cookie experiment with the supervisor eating more of them is quite interesting, they already value themselves higher in a small time frame. If people could practice having power, it would give them insight on how to properly use it.
