I love how, at 10:26, Simon mentions how in "1903 the Wright Brothers took flight"... just as the sound of a plane flying by can be heard in the background.

I don't understand why it's "gifted", or the speech is brilliant. His voice is UNOFFENSIVE, but it doesn't make me swoon. IF you can keep your audience from falling asleep, you've accomplished something! Vin Skully had a soothing voice.I'm also not so sold on his hypothesis either. But everyone here seems to be swooning over him. The examples he chose fit his hypothesis, but my Senior year Economics Professor started out the quarter with "you've all studied the laws of supply and demand, plotted charts and determined the optimum price points, studied macro and micro economics, but the truth is that none of that data exists out in the real world. What you've been taught is how firms behave - as IF that is what they were doing. The equivalent would be if you went to college to be a pool player, you'd be taking courses in physics and geometry, but that's not what the professionals did. If you wanted to get a degree in auto racing, you'd be taking courses in physics, solving simultaneous equations, and so on, but they don't. They drive. And the truth is that it's the risk takers - the ones with a little different approach, that are the ones that are successful. And the majority of new firms fail. Risk takers even moreso. SO the number of very successful businesses - is a very small number. Many more fail than succeed. But if you happen to be that fortunate one that hit the right combination, you might be the next Apple or Tesla. Lastly, I was directed to this talk by a friend at work after I was telling him about how important it was for me as a kid to know "why" with regards to rules we were given, and that I always explained that to my kids, and never had to repeat a single rule that I'd explained so they understood why. But I'm not buying it here. In fact, management in my aerospace doesn't want to know why. They just want the answer they asked for. Or they just want my question, they don't care why I'm asking it. I'd like to disagree, but there's an expression: "He who has the gold, makes the rules." The examples he gives of "why" I'm not guying. The Wright Brothers didn't build a plane because of "Why". They had an idea, an invention, a CREATION. They simply WANTED to do it. Unless the "why" was so they could fly. lol.

I just watched this after a programme on the discovery of superconductors. Quite a contrast - awe-inspiring insights into the nature of matter on the one hand; on the other hand, a guy drawing a chart with three question words that every three year old knows!
Its the best TED video I have ever seen....it was worth watching & has changed the way I think & do work. Thank you Simon!!

There is only ONE way, and it ain't yours - John should know this, claiming to be a Christian. I started reading these PMA authors when I was 8 and I'm now 8 times that old. ALL of their material "comes from" the Bible, however, they do "wrest (twist) the scriptures" somewhat. They all copy each other and come up with a "new" mix of the same things. It is good for folks who must be EXTERNALLY motivated, a large market. The "faith healers" do the same, saying you did not get your healing because you did not have enough faith. "It is God that giveth thee faith". Therefore, they do blaspheme much. Listen to Godly men who prove their faith by their works (James) and read good books by dead preachers (Spurgeon etc.) and some who are still alive and have been studying and preaching/teaching for at least 40 years.
Timeless. It's 2021 here and this speech (and ideas) are still relevant today. Although the mention of Gateway making flat panel TV's or Dell manufacturing PDA's and MP3 players was very nostalgic.

An absolutely astonishing presentation. Rarely have I heard so much wisdom covering so many areas. I love his repeat of the mantra that
"people don't buy what you do, they buy why you do it". He makes the point so clearly and so dramatically, it's astounding to think that it's not common knowledge. This video is essential viewing for anyone wanting to run a successful enterprise.
This is just as cool a talk today (July 26, 2021) and still spot on as it was when I was there at the TEDx Talk in 2009.
I've read the book. And all I can tell you is that IT IS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE ! Thank you so much Simon for sharing this revolutioanary concept. This speech sums up the main ideas, I can't wait to read more of your books and watch your futur speeches. Good day everyone :)

I like how he mentioned that great leaders are inspirational to those around them. I also like how he mentioned that “people don’t buy what you do, they buy why you do it.” Very well spoken!
I really liked how Simon broke down how the "what, how why" into examples with Apple to really drive his point home. Simon got his point across with the having a purpose in why you do things. Making sure you believe in the things you do will make you go farther in life. I definitely think everyone should hear this. It is great for explaining how to market and draw people into what you are selling or believe in. You have to be that 2% "the innovators" to be first.
This is probably the 20th time I've watched this and I'm STILL learning. Thank you Simon Sinek!

I'm watching this in 2018, 9 years after and I think I've watched this video over 100 times. I use his golden circle theory for all my business presentations, elections speeches, award ceremonies, everything. So happy I found this.
By asking the Why question you are in essence including the audience in your vision. Its the difference between story and poetry! Great talk, never gets old.
This video is a great reminder that we all have a power to make our dream come true , keep pushing yourself no matter how hard it may seems.

Wow. This is like taking a fresh breath of air. Totally inspiring, with class and intellect. I admire Simon sinek a lot.
What Simon is teaching here is more than just rewording. Is more than just reversing our logic. It’s about making true change in how we navigate the world, and being able to make the tough calls to stick to our beliefs. Anyone can rewrite a mission statement, but only few can lead by example.
No matter how many times I watch this, everything I see it, I get goose bumps and inspired. Thank you Simon!!
This is - by far and out - the best Tedx talk around. His explanation is not just insightful and urge's to take action, he's got the bull by the horns. Knowing this sets your life out for great success. So before you act, listen. Not just hear what he says.

Summary: "People don't buy what you do, they buy WHY you do it"
You need to give people a reason - a WHY to your service or product. People can understand benefits and features, but it won't change their behavior. "This textbook about Japanese language has 1000 vocabulary!" Is no where near as good as "We believe learning a language should feel natural and anyone can learn a language in 6 months. Our material has..." etc.

The key difference is, it appeals to what people want. It's not just a cool gimmick, people actually understand how this product will affect them.
If today's politicians operated on the "I have a dream" mentality rather than "I have a plan," I believe the world of politics would be transformed. Ambition, vision, and drive are so much more appealing than self-glorification, pride, and unrealistic promises. This is something I can get on board with, thank you Simon!

This TED talk was truly inspiring. I am entering a season of my life filled with uncertainty and doubt looking for what I am going to do post graduation, who I am going to work for, and ultimately the type of person I want to be. Along with that I am saying goodbye to an organization that has been a leading cause for why I have been so happy here at CSU my sorority of 70 women Alpha Delta Pi. As I enter my senior year in the sorority I want to bring in girls that will continue to set a good example on the campus, who will work to better those around them, and who ultimately want to make a difference on the campus and in the world inspiring others. As recruitment is approaching I feel I can take a lot of lessons from this short 18 minute long video. "Why" do I do it, well thats easy because I wanted to be apart of something bigger then myself, I wanted to make genuine connections with like minded people, I wanted to be held accountable, I wanted to make a difference. Now how did I do it, I not only joined the sorority but I became an officer holding a leadership role, and got involved as much as I can. What do we do, well we have philanthropy events, weekly meeting, a set of rules and standards that govern us, and a lot of fun events as well. When you switch from that standpoint it really makes a difference. The comment that stuck with me the most was “if you hire people just because they can do a job, they’ll work for your money, but if you hire someone who believes what you believe they work for you with blood sweat and tears” As I go out in to the real world I want to work for someone who inspires me, and I want to recruit girls who will inspire me and others.
Cassie Aungst Awesome and inspiring ideals. Well done. As far as graduating and what you’ll do after, first, congrats! Second, I’ve found prayer helps a ton. I’ve been post-grad life for two years now and I’ve found God gives just enough light for the step I’m on as long as I’m connected to Him via church, Bible, prayer, etc. Don’t know if you’ve ever tried it but I wouldn’t have survived had I not had that same community of the Church to fall back on like you’re telling me you have with your sorority. Great place to start is looking up Sandals Church, they’re amazing at plugging people into groups and having that new family like feel that you do with your sisters. They have multiple locations so maybe you can find one! Or just watch online 😊

Absolutely brilliant! Super eye-opening! This is the THIRD time we've seen this and each time we see it differently! THIS TIME we FELT it! The evolution has helped us to see the WHY :) Amazing!
I keep coming back to this video and his book "start with why". I mostly do this to keep eye on my why. Sometimes I do it to remind myself. Starting with why is not only about inspiring others and doing good communication - it is also about keeping yourself on the right track and, to me, in line with your morals. Working with something that doesn't align with your morals is contradicting and in worst case contributes to a development that you don't want to see in this world. Therefore, I don't see "start with why" as a tool only to sell products, rather it is a way to nudge the development in the right direction. It may be an example of over-analysis but it works for me :)

The following section I want to use as personal notes for revisiting this video in the future, reminding myself of what my why was at a specific time, reflecting on how I aligned myself with the why and how my how's and what's have changed over the years.
(14/6/22) first entry:
By re-watching this video today, I have realized what has been the cause of my struggles in my studies as of late: I lost my why. But not only that, I developed my why. I think my previous why was just a dressed-up how and what: I want to better living standards by becoming an attaché at an embassy for my country. This was obviously very concrete how but what and why were vague.
Now, my belief system has changed slightly and I want to start with why. Why: because I believe every being has the right to live. How: contributing to the Danish Vegan Party's election campaign. What: doing whatever I can to better the party's chances to get elected and be present in the Danish government, specifically by being part of the communications team.
Great video, I love when he talked about the wright brothers, and how persistent they were in achieving their dream. Most things in life that are worth anything will be hard to achieve, and we see how important airplanes are in today's society
Here for my annual viewing of this video. Still rings true and still is so inspiring after all these years.

I appreciate the way that he used the "golden circle" and went more in depth about each section, the "what", "how", and "why". I also like how he gave real life examples, including Apple. He discusses how Apple uses this technique for their sales.

Thank you. The art of drawing inspiration is confused with the temptation to drown in facts. People act on purposeful concepts. In my limited experience, I have observed two worlds. One that focuses on the results and the other focuses on the process. The result happens to be a consequence of the purposeful process. Both worlds are necessary, but the one that inspires action is the one with purpose. In your example, Langley showed the shallow temperament of the one that chases the carrot, in contrast with the Wright brothers' passion towards their purpose; bringing them victory inspite of the odds being stacked against them.
This contrast between the pursuit of excellence and the pursuit of results explains the reasoning behind inspiring achievements. The pursuit of excellence does not expect a result and it does not sway towards probable odds, it just doesn't accept mediocrity. That's why, the pursuit of excellence has no limits and so do the achievements of the ones that pursue it.
Start with why and end with the endless pursuit of excellence.

This is such a classic TEDx talk. A great case study on public speaking done well, specifically with how to present a central concept then weaving in real-life examples throughout.
This video has been a gateway for me to his leadership videos which have served me well over the years. I also highly recommend his commentaries on the infinite game, and his guidance on finding your own why. Wonderful advice that's helped me push through or change my trajectory on difficult paths.
