There is a guy who drives a z in my town. He's a younger guy, maybe 18 or 19. Whenever I see his car, I can't help but feel like he's having so much more fun than anyone else driving. He always has a smile on his face. I think that's what's missing from driving these days. So few cars make you smile the way that an older import will. They're funky and break down now that they're old, but damn they're fun.

I'd say you had a point if this was a review of a Datsun B210 (my family's car growing up), but this is THE old Japanese car, the one vehicle that as pointed out without it we'd not have our Prius's or Civics or Camrys of today. This car was when Detroit looked down the road and said "we fucked up". And really, it never recovered from this. Maybe if GM had not molested Saturn it would have become something worth saving, or even if GM had taken Saturn's startup money and invested in better Chevys, who knows for sure, but this car has its place in history as a automotive Godzilla.

It was the first Japanese car that was widely admired here (the Toyota 2000 GT seen in You Only Live Twice was produced in tiny numbers). It made the MGB look old-fashioned. It still looks good. I felt this one. Just about to turn 53 and true story this is and was my father's one and only sports car he ever owned. When I was four years old I had no idea how cool and forward thinking he was to try out this new Japanese made sports coupe considering the current trend at the time with performance cars. So he did indeed purchased one of the first 1970 Datsun 240Z's available in our area. Back then I was even small enough for my parents to justify me riding in the back cargo area before the seatbelt or booster requirement. Scary when I think about it now of course but I had fun back there. Great car from what I remember and I would really love an opportunity to drive or own one someday just so I can experience what he did. Wish I had him around still to ask questions about that car and that time. Funny but he only had the car for about a year or two and ended up trading it for the early VW Westfilia "Campmobile" vans that was all the rage back then. I did see a VERY nice one out in Gardnerville Nevada when I was visiting there last month. Made me think of that time and my father of course. Great review as always guys!

I could have had first-hand memories of a car like this. Back when I was six, my dad was shopping for a car because he and Mom finally decided they needed more than one. I remember going with him to our local Datsun dealership, and Dad was interested in a 260Z. He ended up buying something else because the dealer wouldn't budge on the price. Damn you, Dad!
OTOH, one of my uncles did buy a used 260Z some time after that, and I got to ride in it. One of the experiences in my life that shaped my appreciation of small sports cars.

great writing, Mr. Regular. The early 80s 280 zx's were the first cars I ever "noticed" as a kid. I asked my dad, "What's that?" And he said, "That's a Z-car." Ever since the age of 4, I've had a soft spot for these. I remember whenever I'd see one, I would point and say, "Z-car! Z-car!" Now I think about how my son points and says, "School bus!" or, "Dump Truck!" with such excitement, and it makes me think about how much joy it can bring a person just to look at things like cars, and how my dad might've felt whenever I'd say, "Z-car! Z-car!"

You feel everything you do with the turns of the screws and blips of the throttle. Comparatively, flashing a tune to my BMW e36 is just cold, you flash it, start it and see if anything changed. Any coasting in nuetrals an instant fail on the U.K. driving test for poor control (and I’d imagine most of Europe).
Generally it’s taught ‘brake before gear’ before you get to the corner, obviously if you can heel toe you can combine those two, but you’d probably fail for control if you heel toed on a driving test unless the examiner understood what you were actually doing..

I have wanted one of these cars since seeing one that one of my classmates had in college in the early 70s. I wound up owning two British sports cars and a Porsche later on but now I finally got my Z, an all-black 2019 370Z sports coupe 6M. It's is by far the best sports car that I've owned. I once had an opportunity to own the predecessor to the 240Z, the 2000 roadster, but blew that chance by waiting too long in making the decision.

4:40 Fun fact, that Yamaha 2.0 DOHC engine is the one that's in the Toyota 2000GT

Valentin, that's because just after Nissan rejected it for the Fairlady Z, Yamaha went to Toyota and that's the "genesis" of the legendary 2000GT and the relationship Yamaha still has with Toyota.

@@syxepop My 1988 Celica all-trac had Yamaha stampings on its head back in the day. I think the 2ZZGE is also a yamaha mill if i'm not mistaken. Can't believe that engine is still going into cars today....

Felix ... A "well-tuned" relationship. (Yamaha has the same passion making musical instruments as they do making performance engines for bikes, watercraft and cars)

@@seanpersaud317, neither the Fairlady Z (240Z) nor the 2000GT were "built for the Americans" (at the time few if any Japanese cars had that intention. Their inspiration were other sports cars like the Jaguar E-Type or its' Alfa Romeo competitor.
And those aren't too small either as their > 2.0L V6's would show (one size class above your MG's, TR-6's or Fiat / Alfa Romeo Spider).

I own a 280z that i used to daily. Drove it from California to Ft. Campbell, KY. It doesn't have modern features but man is it fun to drive. Mr. Regular got it right when he said there's an experience to driving it that you can't beat.

I had a '76 280Z and later a '78 280Z. The most convenient feature on both was the ashtray in the center console was the perfect size for a 12oz beer can. A feature I regularly took advantage of. And the car was pure driving joy.

Great little "soulful" review. Your History of AMC video brought me here. Both get thumbs up from me. One of these 240Zs is lurking just around the corner. I'm just old enough to remember when these and the subsequent 260s and 280s were sort of the "aspirational" amongst the kind of high school kids who, a decade or so earlier, might have yearned for a Triumph, MG or Austin-Healey, or later maybe a Miata.

I had an orange 72 240Z back in the late 70's. it was lowered and had a header and straight pipe out back with a tiny muffler as I had too. It cornered like it was on rails. I blew Corvettes and Lotus 's off the road regularly. Recaro seats and roll bar. It would easily make over 150 mph and gave the most beautiful 4' flames out the back when you downshifted at 120 mph.
