1972 Datsun 240Z: Going Far

- The Datsun was “sort of a college graduation present from myself to myself” says Chris Bury, the son element of the father-and son team that slide and jump and guide this ruggedly modified 240Z. Together with his dad, TJ, Chris has already checked off one successful completion of the challenging Peking to Paris endurance rally in the 240Z that began as a rusty project plucked from the local classifieds, and the two are about to set out on their second attempt with the same car this summer. What was once a tired Craigslist special became a half-finished canyon carver, only to finally morph into this competent, rugged rally car that’s about to go the distance, again.

240Z is one of the best vintage cars
Although the GTR is considered the 911 competitor...the Z is Japan’s 911. Is their icon!
Is the American Corvette, or Mustang....(depending who you talk to).
It really is an icon! 👍
I am a simple man...I see a 240z, I like the video
@@LY3355 GTRs are lovely too, but the 240z/S30Z is definitely the iconic sports car of the era.
But why, I don't understand the facination with these cars
@@zhongxina2793 because they are classic, very very beautyful and raw
"The car was sort of a college graduation gift from myself to myself" dude that's the best graduation gift ever
It was
You know he's an engineer when he says he had disposable income within a couple months of graduating lol
@@SteveGilbertson - or because he came from a wealthy family. How many freshly minted engineers have a parents home in Thousand Oaks where they can leave their broken down car for months until dad buys it from them to restore it?
instablaster.
@@stms4411 so what? Sour grapes won't get you disposable income. Not his fault where he was born. The kid is genuine, not entitled.
The Datsun 240Z: When you need to get to Paris, but you don't need to get there first.
Best line of the video...
But one did win in 2016 : Mark Pickering and Dave Boddy from Australia won the Classic category in their 1973 Datsun 240Z.
...but they get there in style ;-)
Like the vids but there is such a reak of Pretenciliciousne$$
@@icecreamalacarte That's Thousand Oaks, California.
My hometown that I can't afford to live in...$$
That's how you do a crossover, Nissan.
240z is not a Nissan
I've always had an affinity for the Datsun 240Z
I can’t even get my dad to say hi to me.
6:40am On the West Coast...Just got in from the Night shift....getting ready for the day shift. I SEE PETROLICIOUS I AM A HAPPY MAN.
Chris - hit the nail on the head! This is truly a great job) You rarely meet a connoisseur with knowledge of history and the ability to perform difficult tasks. Old school and quality at a height) Good luck to you guy! You are the best)
Such iconic styling. One of the best looking cars out there.
for owning one myself, I totally agree, such a great car! I'll keep mine forever, should life allow me to
Tuesday Morning: Petrokicious time. Even better with a Datsun!
Great father son memories. Good job. Again, great video
Cool car and cooler Dad and son team . Wish you best of luck in your next race !
My son is only 6 years old but a budding car guy. This is inspiring because as he ages, we will share father/son experiences in my classic. Great story.
Amazing project! Here in Spain, we make this with tiny 1500 lb Seat Pandas hehe, but this is another level. Love that "familiy affairs"
I love this rally... I hope one day I can attend this race
I dig how these guys are using the car in a way a lot of people wouldn't attempt. Offroading a classic car is nightmare fuel in my opinion lol. Props to them.
luv this story and this car, what a great father and son project, well done guys, I could hear that engine was not standard. When I grew up in Southern Africa, I learned and used to drive 1000's of kilometres on dirt roads in a little Datsun 1200 and 1400cc pick up truck, we called them bakkies, a very light basic vehicle by today's standards, but so reliable and strong, I used to literally fly across the dirt roads, it taught me everything I know about vehicle control, only moving off camber when I could see a plume of dust in the distance coming towards me, because you knew it was another vehicle....great times and great adventures... 240z is still the best looking Z I ever saw.... :-)
"A car to me is an interesting way of converting fossil fuels to fun."
I've never heard a better argument against the development of electric cars. And this is particularly interesting because I learned to drive (at 14,yrs old) on a 1971 240z. Driving this rally in a 240z is truly the stuff of legends. Great job guys! Both of you are an inspiration!
You never heard a better argument FOR electrics. Electric for the commute, combustion for the weekend!
I watched this video a year ago when it came out.... Now I own a 280zx and love it to death. I now 100% understand the love for these cars, as I 99% understood it before I bought mine
Magnifique aventure humaine et mécanique, ou comment vivre sa passion pleinement.
Le choix de la sublime 240Z est original.
Félicitations 👏👏👏
Many thanks to the authors of the channel for their exact focus and choice of models! Professional team! Keep it up guys)
Such a fantastic father and son story!!!!!!!!
My parents and grandparents sold a '76 280Z back and forth during my formative years. One of only two cars I ever loved in my life.
Great car Great Father and Son Team, thanks again petrolicious keep up the good work😉
Awesome to see more 240Z coverage!
That's the way son and father should live their lifes together. Glad for you guys... When I've bought a Cadillac my father told me this is an unpractical choise...
Thank you Petrolicious, for another great video... Hopefully I to can drive in a dream rally like this
Another well conceived Petrolicious delivery! Bravo!
The 240Z is a bucket list item of mine,. a MZR 240Z to be specific.
Great story, great car. I wish I had the money for this type of adventure.
Petrolicous at it's very best, thank you
This video got me so inspired! I have an old Ford Capri (1979) sitting around in my students parking lot, which was also kinda a present to myself. I had no big admirations to make it a performance street vehicle, but an endurance/adventure race fully captures my imagination and gets me thrilled. Awesome episode! First I have to get rid of those student loans but hey this keeps me motivated hahah. Cheers everyone 🙌
That may be the coolest adventure ever. I wish that I had the means to make something like that happen. I would love to see a video about the trip itself!
Had one in the late 70's to early 80's. I loved the car, but road salt had badly eaten into the body and fenders. I replaced/soldered/glassed over nearly all of it. What did me in, was I blew a head gasket being stupid. I sent the head off to be machined and the shop totally did not know how to deal with an AL OHC head. They screwed up the cam bearing journals and it seized the cam. I considered the small block chevy route, but it was more work than I could afford to put into it (and the weight would of thrown off the handling a bit). It's manual everything including the chokes but I loved the SU carbs. Other than an airflow meter, they're super easy to work on. The hydraulic clutch was pretty exposed and I expect these guys addressed that. The handling...holy crud. With fairly minor parts updates (body bushings, shock tower braces), the thing was just incredible to drive. The other great car from this time is the old 510 which was a Beamer 2002 knockoff.
I totally agree, both the 240,and the 510,were great cars!
Thumbs up and all the best for the son & father Peking to Paris rally!!!
professional work guys keep them coming
A full video?! Thanks a million!!
Awesome father and son adventure.
what a cool dad, cool car and experience, enjoy the ride guys
This is bloody amazing
Such an amazing story!
nice work Chris, good luck in the race!
Wow such a great episode.
Hope it goes well. Good luck!
well i had this car back then.. in a garage somewhere in Gran Turismo
What a nice dad!
I love my 1977 Datsun B210 Honey Bee.
Top Video! This is the Spirit what it is all about. The Wohle Car Thing... use, what you have
Beautiful lines. The 240z
F-ing awesome guys! Thanks for sharing!
I saw this car features on Jay Leno I didn’t know it was a father-son team driving it I like the car even more now
Pleased I didn't unsubscribe after the last few "teaser" videos. Excellent content as usual
This is interesting race. I have just heard this race from a friend of mine couple days ago.
This is a real adventure!!
Nice and good luck guys
Great Car! Great Story!
Excellent content
Wonderful episode! Wished there was more detail on the suspension and other technical systems, though. Always wanted to do this with my MGB GT.
Love Datsun 240z's
Tried to search off road 240z, was not disappointed!
Good luck boys!
Epic story 👍
now that looks fun
One of the goals in my life is to do this rally in my Volkswagen thing... knowing someone who’s done it in a 30’s Bentley it has to be the best thing you can do
The thing would be a great choice! I have considered taking my Morris minor for a long time, but maybe I need to get it able to drive more than 50km reliably
I always smile when I see this car, and not to discount Chris and TJ's efforts, but it would have been nice to add a little note about John Coffey who helped build this car for its first Peking to Paris run. That guy was a legend in the Z community.
@@ChrisBury-fz2ey No worries, its just awesome to see his work live on through your efforts. Good luck out there!
Very intresting video.
Love the 240Z, my best friend finished restoring one last year, we went to the Nissan Heritage Musem to see the original rally Zs, these cars are amazing on the road or off.
You can use the later nismo limited slip if you get special made bolts , nice upgrade , only ten bolts needed but worth it, only found one place to get them so far
this video is the best
A great team.
Needs same Jendosa ZG Flares. Awesome out doors race, all Organic smell and nature. 👍👍👍
Would love to see a Cressida feature or other rare JDM classics like the Nissan Gloria, etc. it might be hard to find them, but it would diversify the cast and give us something new and obsecure
Nice in my view the 240z original RX7 and Toyota 2000Gt were the most beautiful Japanese cars of all time . I loved the the Supra’s from the 80’s as well but they are more “cool” then beautiful.
Type R's dude... GTR's...
@@shadowblack1987 those are cool cars but he is right the S30 is a beautiful car, and not just because I have a 260Z 😊🙄
Thats just so cool..
Lifelong friends.
Very sweet
Really nice car. I’d imagine the logistics for a journey like that was a real nightmare
This 240Z was featured in the "fully committed" video. Nice car!
Can you link me to that video? Haven't seen it! -Chris
Just goes to show how practical these cars are for just about any kind of motorsport.
They are pretty good drivers as well.
Nice garage floor.
I feel like Petrolicious is better when it's not just rich people throwing money at cars. I guess most of these people featured are well off, but this one is so obvious it's hard to ignore.
Super aventure ,une de mes relation l'a fait avec une américaine,j'aimerais bien le faire avec une citroen DS ,mais le choix d'une 240 Z est plutôt très bon vu la robustesse ,bravo a petrolicious pour cette sympathique video
A little sad you didn't mention any of the fab work done by John Coffee. I met with him at Benton performance when the car was getting a cage and the roof rack. It was the last car he built before he passed from a motorcycle accident.
Nice CAR!
The Fair Lady was designed by a German, who brought the most beautiful BMW of all time, the 507.
That man was Albrecht Graf von Goertz.
Are you sure? Graf von Goertz did some design work for Nissan, but Yoshihiko Matsuo was credited as the lead designer.
@@BrendanMacWade okay. But his influence left a mark on the Z cars.

That Super Duke tho... 😍
The best part
Now that's a car!
I'd love to see Petrolicious make the movie of the race.
They did! TV Series actually. Unfortunately it's behind a paywall on their website, but well worth it!
Nice 👍
Please more Datsun videos
I just rewatched the smoking tire episode yesterday
So embarrassing
@devgu38 I ♥️ The car the and build style but not Matt farah though.
Very cool car and family. Would have like to see what suspension modifications they did. Also wonder what rear end gear they are running.
3.9 rear end. Suspension completely custom design from MCA in Australia.
what kinds of spare parts did you bring with from Beijing to Paris? spare alternator, battery?
Battery is too heavy and easy to source, but over 300lb of spares the first time; cut down to ~100lb the 2nd time. Very specific to the car; the vulnerable/weak parts are the things to carry: specific suspension linkages, ignition coils, fuel pumps, etc.
aha, thats brilliant. we are in a day where people lower subarus and others lift their z's :') but it does look mint!!!
Sin palabras . guauuu!
this guy and his dad made a car and my dad won't even come back from the supermarket its been 7 years dad please mom won't stop crying
DECENT!
E-P-I-C shots...! B-)
