DESPITE being born with Neurofibromatosis that has left 90% of her body covered in tumour ‘bubbles’, a woman has found the love of her life - who just so happens to have the same condition. 58-year-old Gail Appelgren inherited a severe form of Neurofibromatosis (NF) from her mother at birth. Causing tumours to form on nerve tissue, they can develop anywhere in the nervous system, including on your brain and spinal cord - often making the condition life-threatening. Since she was first diagnosed at 12 years old, Gail, who lives in Edmonton, Canada, has received more than 40 surgeries to try and correct the thousands of tumours on her body and counter the skin cancer that has formed as a result. Over the years, Gail has been accused of being contagious and has been banned from public swimming pools because of the way she looks - however, her luck began to change in August 2010 when she met her now husband, Tim Golumbia, a fellow sufferer of the condition. Tim, 55, was born with a more mild form of NF, but understands more than most what it’s like to live with such a visual, and different, appearance. And after just a string of dates, the happy couple found great comfort in one and other and haven’t looked back since.

Her voice is soo soft... people with such conditions have such beautiful empathy and unconditional love and acceptance in them that it just reflects in their tone... beautiful couple. For someone that struggles with acne and depression, this was a lesson to watch.
I’ve known people like this. A woman on the bus used to sit with me . No one would sit with us because I’m fat and she had these bumps. So we built a friendship on the bus. She said it hurt every day. I was taking the bus to the gym to get healthy...and the critical looks of people almost made me stop but my friend kept me going with her wisdom and kindness. I have lupus and so we bonded over how people treat us. She is beautiful inside and out. I’m glad to have been reminded of this today.
This is such a wonderful story and honestly you really rock for trying and improve yourself by going to the gym, keep doing your thing and never give up! Wish I had the motivation too, sending lots of love from Italy ❤❤❤ you are strong!!

The story about that nurse broke my heart. How can someone be so cruel? Especially to a stranger.
Kassie it’s called being “Nice Nasty.” In other words the nurse was being very rude, but trying to hide it by saying something nice. I actually get it all the time. I’ve been told, “ oh you look pretty, for a black girl” or “ wow you really don’t eat that much for a big girl.” Like really? Then when confronted about their rudeness, the person tries to stay they were giving a compliment. 🙄
Nurses are really mean...I mean they are some that are genuinely nice but majority of them are 🤐

Done of my very dearest friends had this disease. By the time she passed, she had undergone 4 surgeries to loosen the tightening of her skin. It was horrid! My dear friend was so wonderful. Her husband walked away from her and left her for another woman. Their young teen sons were devastated. My friend had a great doctor and she had a loving strong support team of her 13 siblings and her girlfriends. Lori taught me to enjoy each day, love life, forgive the un-educated to her illness, laugh, how to get up from the ground after a hard fall, keep going when more lumps form on the inside of her mouth. Her arteries would harden even more, along with her skin. Life was just plain difficult for Lori, and her attitude was to make the best of it, and find joy. To this day, I miss Lori, and I know her sons are happily married with children. I hope her ex husband has found happiness.

Casual Geek as someone who has nf1 I would just like to say that’s not true. I don’t feel bad in my own body with having it. I feel good. I know that I’m a great person no matter what. And just because I have nf1 doesn’t mean I’m ugly, disgusting, or just not attractive. I have had it all my life and I’m what they call a mutation. And you have no right to go and say something like that without knowing them. There will be days when we might not 100% comfortable in our body’s but we still love our selfs because we are still people. So please think before you say things.

I also have neurofibromatosis and my younger sister sometimes wants to give up on the situation, there is no treatment for Nf I can only hope that this tumor can be removed before it grows.I come from a small town in Indonesia where sometimes they see us as monsters because of NF

I have heard from a skin specialist that surgery only makes them increase/ grow in size. Please do your research before doing anything. Also please look into the Autoimmune Protocol Diet.

My precious late soulmate Hector was also an NF1-survivor, who would've loved the "Just Ask" T-shirts, & proudly rocked one. Never before or since have I known anyone who was close to being as loving/giving as he was...& I cherish every moment I was fortunate enough to spend with him.

Before my mother in law passed earlier this year, she had NF. She was the most beautiful person I know, and put up with the same silliness. People need to be accepting of others, no matter the appearance or level of ability.
Met a man who was born like this and he is literally the sweetest man I’ve ever met! Him and my grandma are friends and not going to lie when I was little of course I was scared to touch him but now I can’t stop giving him hugs whenever I leave!

Very true!!💕 I’m unlucky in that I have a genetic illness (not the one in the video) which has left me disabled and in pain 24/7...but I’ve been incredibly lucky/blessed to had started dating my now husband at only 15, married at 18 & we are now 36 & just as in love as we were the day we got married. 💕💕💕

I am 84 years old, and this is the first time I have ever seen this . Two wonderful people that have found each other. I am a two tour Vietnam vet, that was wounded and medivaced on both tours. I served twenty years in the US Army and retired. I have four kids all now parents and grandparents themselves. I am a retired a police officer. My parents did not do the parent responsibility, my dad worked hard but was an alcoholic and we had a miserable childhood. Our childhood only lasted a few years and the Sate of Mass, took over and we ended up in Foster homes , where they took us in just for the money and use on the farm as we grew older. I am proud of the way my kids turned out, although one had a son that wanted to be a thug, and he paid for it later on, but his kids found happiness. There now I got my "Me" out of the way. I am so very proud how you two are dealing with what life has sent your way. I am enjoying my second marriage, to a woman that takes care of me on my second marriage. We have been married for 17 years who cares for me and I care for her. You two have set the goal high, and I for one thank you for showing the world what it's all about, God bless you both. Ken

I would be proud and honored to have friends as kind and funny and sweet and balanced as you two! The body is just a shell. The most important part of ANYONE is his or her heart. Those who put too much emphasis on the outside are really missing out on some incredible people. Like you two! I remember about 45 years ago we went to a Ukrainian festival in Detroit, my hometown. A woman with what had to have been neurofibromatosis passed us by, pressing through the crowd. I only saw her for a moment or two, but she made an indelible mark on me, this young teenager. I remember thinking how she was out enjoying her life, taking in the festival regardless of how most people may react to her condition. I thought of the personal strength it must take to move through a largely uninformed and superficial world in which you're different on the outside than most others. Your gift of knowledge to the world at large is truly immense and certainly appreciated by me. Thank you!

People often complain that CZcams is the worst place for hateful comments, but I have not seen one negative reaction to this video. A positive sign that we are living in an era where people are more accepting of others’ differences.
This is so scary. Not in the sense of the disease they have, but how the body can just change so fast. One day you're living your best life and the next you have cancer. One day your'e living your best life and the next you notice aabnormal growths spawning on your body, and so on. So crazy how quickly you life can be turned upside down.

I was born with a big birthmark under my eye, my dad told me a story about one time being at the store as a small child and some lady was just stairing at me weird and asked my dad what was wrong with me and he said he couldnt help to feel a little sad knowing his daughter is going have to deal with that all her life... im only 22 and learning to love my birthmark everyday.

This is beautiful. Finding someone that "fits" you is so very important especially when faced with this kind of challenge. Finding this kind of love even without this kind of challenge can be horribly difficult all by itself. I hear and see every day people bemoaning not finding true love when their flaw often is that they treat the process as if they are shopping for a perfect car not looking for a person that will love them and be there for them long after the eye pleasing bloom of youth is gone.

My brother has NF. I grew up watching him get bullied and the ignorance of neurofibromas causes shock and judgement by people that don’t understand this disorder... it isn’t contagious... thank you for opening the doors of transparency about living with NF.... :)

My husband suffers from quite severe Neurofibromatosis, and he is definitely one of the most beautiful people I have ever met. I find it terribly sad that I am less concerned with the future of his health, and much more concerned with how he is going to be treated by others in the future as his disease progresses and slowly takes over his body. I'm happy to see more and more education on the topic.
