    Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad both made lots of money...there's an audience who wants to see these movies, that much is undeniable. It's a shame then that that audience is being served up abject rubbish because the money men want to play catch-up to Marvel as fast as possible, rather than actually take the time to establish the continuity with care. Gotta cram 3 movies worth of big events and motivations into the one movie...it's the only way! Yeah, no wonder the movie's a mess. The first movie that's actually a part of this "Quick, copy Marvel's shared continuity" philosophy, and they've already had the death of Superman (and then immediately nullified the impact just before the credits rolled) and wasted a villain like Doomsday.
    No care, no thought, just wasted opportunities.

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 Před 7 lety +3

      Absolutely. A movie with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman only made $112 million more worldwide than Deadpool, a much more niche character. When you say "comic book character", most average people will default to Superman or Batman...they're iconic in pop culture. To be THAT close to Deadpool reflects the quality of Deadpool, and just how badly DC have messed up right out the gate.
      Hopefully the movies get better, surely they can't get much worse?

    Critics were completely right about both Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad....awful...awful...awful movies, batman v superman with its stupid plot, terrible characters and frankly awful pacing. And suicide squad with its cheesy musical cues, one dimensional characters, awful plot (even for a superhero movie), confusing tonal shifts (wants to be dark and edgy, but also wants to be light and fun) and laughable climax. Comic book fans should aim a lot higher if these movies are what they actually want from these classic characters.

    • @dennett316
      @dennett316 Před 7 lety +9

      Nooooo, don't you see? It's clear that every single one of the critics was bought off by Disney...especially all the critics featured on the Warner-owned Rotten Tomatoes site, so glad that a petition was created to get that site banned for being so biased against the films that I love through sheer brand loyalty!
      I agree with you on both counts, really poor movies.

    "I went in genuinely wanting them to be good"
    This is what irks me when people argue against scepticism and criticism.
    The best outcome for everyone is that all films are superlative. Marvel fanboys don't win anything - aside from being able to say "i told you so" - if a DC film is bad.
    Either way, I'm sure they would trade that for something that exceeded their expectations.

  • @AngelEarth2011
    @AngelEarth2011 Před 7 lety

    Mark, is there a tv series that you've watched that you think would be great on the big screen? I can think of three: Vice Principles (the first episode of which has a cameo by Bill Murray, and stars Danny McBride and Walton Goggins); The Man in the High Castle, which is produced by Ridley Scott's Scott Free Productions and stars Alexa Davalos, Rupert Evans, Luke Kleintank, and Rufus Sewell; and the remake / sequel to Westworld starring Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Woods, Ed Harris, James Marsden, Thandie Newton, and Jeffrey Wright. Although your focus is on cinema, for some time now the crossover between cinema and television has been growing, partly because the quality of television drama has grown, and partly because serialisation allows a deeper story to be told. I'd say one of the first tv dramas to cross that threshold was Battlestar Galactica, especially the series finale which I think was actually screened in select cinemas simultaneous to its broadcast.

    Based on Kermode's views, the critics are out of touch. The fan response to the DC films has been about the same as the critic's response. Yes, there are people who like it, but the majority think of them as bad films. And as for the box office? Batman v Superman not breaking a billion when Captain America 3 does? The box office has been underwhelming at best.

    I wouldn't say BvS and Suicide Squad split critics and the public all that much. Yes, the lovers of those films were more vocal, but they had to be as the majority of film-goers - be they critics or not - hated them (as evidenced by the box-office drop-off).
    Suicide Squad did enjoy a slightly better time of it (again, from critics and not alike), but only because it was less dreary and the characters were a little more fun.

    As a comic book fan I can say I agree with the critics when it comes to Suicide Squad. It's badly made, David Ayre can't write female characters and its dull. The movies advertising told us it was one thing and then when we went to see it it turned out to be just another tedious Will Smith film.
    I'll also state that for me to dislike Suicide Squad is hard. The bar it needed to get under for me to like it is so low you'd needed to dig just to find it and yet I came out hating it. For that to happen something very serious is wrong with it.

  • @ZosoJade
    @ZosoJade Před 7 lety

    I'd disagree with what Mark said about critics hating BvS but audiences enjoying it because it got big box office. This is inaccurate - it got big box office because it was a Batman and Superman film. It could have consisted of nothing more than two cats licking each other and it would still have made millions. Rather if you look at evidence of audience approval - it's Cinemascore in the US, ratings on IMDb and user ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, and it's terrible legs (in the US it made more money in its first weekend than the entire rest of its run), it becomes obvious audiences were NOT in fact enamoured with the film either.

  • @Linkman247
    @Linkman247 Před 7 lety +1

    I feel you should form your own opinion when it comes to seeing movies. The problem I have with sites like Rotten Tomatoes is that as an aggregate they are too binary. You have to either love it or hate it and there is no middleground anymore for a film to be just ok. There is also the fact that fake reviews do exist (Sony pictures has already been sued for things like that.)
    I saw BvS and Suicide Squad and paid to see them and left disappointed by both. I want DC to have good films but I hated what they did with the character of Superman. They tried to cram 5 different stories into one film without earning it. I know there are those who like it and more power to them. It just didn't deliver the Superman I know and love from the comics.
    Conversely the critics panned the Warcraft film but I enjoyed it quite a bit despite its flaws.

    Do i have to lay some smackdown about bvs:doj and sucide squad. Right dr k as much as I like is guilty of what has in the past accused others of. Not understanding a genre. Let's lay it out there bvsdoj and sucide squad are not bad movie or bad superhero movies. Anyone who thinks they are doesn't know what theya re talking about ina genre which containsa ll four fantastic 4 movies, superman 3, amazing Spiderman 2, green lantern, the spirit, batman and robin, steel, spawn (though I think tis badly judged) daredevil, electra,. Now thing is this movies were ok they introduced us toa group of villians while I accept people don't like the enchantress. I liked it how she got the power and her transformation. I dint like the pdestruction thing but I liked the team and I liked the bond they grew though I feel that was probably extended in original cut.BVS is not a bad movie jesse eisenberg was annoying but I though cavil was fine though missed used in the fgilm, liked afflack and I thought in the end it portrayed an battle of two people who dotn really talk to each toher finding oout theya re much alike.

    Batman Vs Superman was much better than Suicide Squad. Suicide Squad was flawed all around, at least Batman V Superman had some good bits and tried to work as a film. I mean the editing in Suicide Squad is laughable, even for a mainstream audience.

    • @GaiashKetoji
      @GaiashKetoji Před 7 lety

      Personally I found BvS to be worse but that's because it made me angry with what it did with the characters. Suicide Squad was really poorly made but at least the characters were accurate to the source material.

    • @badfilms5891
      @badfilms5891 Před 7 lety

      I think there was a good movie inside the overblown mess that Snyder made, whereas Suicide Squad makes me really question how the film got through that many people and still got released.

    • @GaiashKetoji
      @GaiashKetoji Před 7 lety

      Joseph Bullock Suicide Squad is a complete mess as a film there's no doubt about that but it isn't the insult to DC characters that BvS is. At least Suicide Squad doesn't shamelessly kill off an iconic member of Superman's cast for no reason.

    He seems very salty that BvS and SS made people open their eyes to the stupidity that critics really are. 27% and 26% for them is absolutely ridiculous considering that Ghostbusters (2016) has a 73% "certified fresh" rating.

    • @TheMoviePlanet
      @TheMoviePlanet Před 7 lety +14

      The percentage is just an overall "liked/disliked" indicator. Technically, a film could have a 5.9/10 critical average and have a 0% Tomatometer rating while another could have a 6/10 critical average with a 100% Tomatometer rating. If you look at the actual RT averages for each film you listed , BvS got a 4.9/10, Suicide Squad a 4.7/10 and Ghostbusters a 6.5/10.

      The Movie Planet What EXACTLY was the point of your reply ? I said that only 26% of critics that reviewed Suicide Squad gave it a positive review. 4.7/10 against a 6.5/10 of Ghostbusters is still ridiculous as a score.

      There's nothing wrong with vapid, empty fun....Suicide Squad and Batman vs Superman both forgot the "fun" part. SS tried to attach a veneer of fun through it's presentation and editing, but it failed miserably due to being so transparent with it, and the fact it was seemingly edited in a blender.
