- The Gospel According to Thomas, commonly shortened to the Gospel of Thomas, is a well preserved early Christian, non-canonical sayings-gospel which many scholars believe provides insight into the oral gospel traditions. It was discovered near Nag Hammadi, Egypt, in December 1945, in one of a group of books known as the Nag Hammadi library. The Gospel of Thomas was found among a collection of fifty-two writings that included, in addition to an excerpt from Plato's Republic, gospels claiming to have been written by Jesus' disciple Philip. Scholars have speculated that the works were buried in response to a letter from Bishop Athanasius who for the first time declared a strict canon of Christian scripture.

I wouldn't doubt if these were the real Jesus words and were hidden from most religious people who believe strongly solely in the canonical biblical books of the west. These words are a breath of fresh air. They fill me with joy and happiness. They calm me and make me wonder. I can listen to this on replay over and over and always come away with new insight. For just a moment in my life, the whole life felt like I was sorrounded by all loving presence, I had absolute no-fear and even after people laughed at me, I didn't feel anything. I had typed out a big story about my relapse into the clutches of the evil one there now... Then deleted it.. Because that picture speaks a thousand words for my experience. I've had an awakening after torture all my life. We are already saved. My obsession has been lifted.
My promise land is already coming to fruition, go to scripture, every detail laid out, yet hidden from the enemy.
That was my first hearing of this Gospel. Did you know that this was the prevalent Gospel of the first century church? Also that Mark was called the unknown Gospel. John is the only Gospel written by an eye witness to the Savior, which is a reason I really love the Gospel of John, it's also the only one of the four not to use a parable! This Thomas has me a bit confused in areas, some feels dead on to our Lord's teachings while other portions seem unfinished and almost contradictory. I know as in all Holy inspired scripture it's a living force, meaning it can have different meanings at different points of ones walk, but some of it felt so dark, and almost hopeless. I have struggled my whole life with my perception of Christ while in the flesh. At first I pictured him as the Jesus of Nazareth movie, down cast, saddened, almost starving and dirty in appearance. Then I went with the handsome, witty, vibrant Christ, and then the mosty average, human, laughing and dancing at weddings, maybe even with a good sense of humor. Now I'm back to the man of sorrow image. In truth we can paint all of these images from scripture, so maybe he was simply a combination of it all as most are, or maybe it was a progressive from a typical guy who enjoyed life, to the down cast, with tons of cosmic pressure to drink the cup given? Who knows, I'm just glad I received his eternal work on that awful cross, that stamped my name in the book of life. Thank you Christ Jesus.
