  • In this episode, we explore the fascinating spiritual and philosophical teachings of the non-canonical Gospel of Philip. Often termed a "gnostic" text, this incredible ancient document contains some truly interesting ideas, and a very controversial and famous account of Jesus and Mary Magdalene.

Philip, esoteric history knows that Christianity actually began as a GNOSTIC religion, gnosis meaning knowledge gained on a personal level and NOT through group consensus, as you know. ("Why don't you decide for yourself what is right?" Jesus Christ asks in the New Testament.) And although people always tend to "group-up," it's a mistake to consider gnostics to be a "group" or variety of groups. Gnostics are individuals, each with his or her own personal understanding that is unique to that person. And THIS is the only sane way, as no two people can actually have the exact same set of beliefs....which is why organized religions are not generally populated by totally sincere individuals, and are hypocritical by nature...and this is why organized religion is disintegrating in these "end times," as well must happen in the birthing process of the true understanding that is coming: the "Second Coming," the unveiling of the Christ - the Spirit of GOD - within YOU.
There can be legitimate religious organizations, if they respect the individual's right to believe what they want. And in Christianity such an organization is UNITY, which was founded in Kansas City Missouri in the late 1800's. This is the only one I know of. (Christian Science found a lot of the Truth, but makes the mistake of limiting its members and cementing its doctrines.) Both of these groups were children of the poorly-named "New Thought" movement, which found the OLDEST of Thought there is! TRUTH.
Elijah has returned, as prophesied, and testifies.
Visit my channel to learn more and/or to find how to contact me. If you keep up with the news in the U.S. you can perhaps see that the Book of Revelation is wide open, and my role in Chapter 11 isn't so far away. For, although Revelation (and the entire Bible) is highly symbolic (which is why few understand it), there is also a very literal element. The trick is knowing which is which!
      Salud!

" Gnostic " , non-canonical gospels sound very eastern in their spirituality and teachings. Where standard Christianty is very similar to Judaism and Islam, these works sound in a lot of ways like Hinduism and Buddhism. There is lots of talk about the nature of reality, how you can find God in yourself and how everything is connected some how. Its very interesting.

I've asked about the non-canonical Gospels with recent Orthodox Christian converts. They really didn't want to hear much of them, other than saying they were heresies because the Church councils declared them so. But to me, it seems self-serving to say "This is wrong" when you're ultimately just trying to promote your own sect.

Some are extremely interesting though , especially the gospels of Thomas and Mary. As far as we know the 4 canonical gospels are the oldest, Mark being the oldest and the author of Luke also writing the book of Acts. It would be amazing if the " Q " gospel was to be discovered so we could see how synoptic gospels are all connected through it and what was left out from those 3.

Sometimes I think the Jainism parable of the elephant with the blind individuals is true; that all religions all make some good progress in their own way of uncovering the divine and how one should act to uncover it for one's self. I would love to see more unity between religions and also those who don't know or are undecided! Great work.

Thank you for your great video Filip ! Your video always give me an inspiration and reflexion on those fascinating textes.
I want to mention something interesting between orthodox christianity and gospel of Phillip. On the gate of Agiou Pavlou Monastery of Mont Athos there is a phrase: if you die before your death, you will never die with your death. It's a teaching closed to the word you mentioned in gospel of Philip, and this orthodox teaching is surely from Isaac of Nineveh. And also from the teaching of this father of church, we could find the word like 'the light of the future world is only for the one who has already seen it before his death' (I forget the original word, but something similar). So maybe we could find a line between which we call gnosticism and the orthodox teaching, there may be some base and common teaching before the seperation between orthodox and gnosticism.
And for the three Maria, I suggest that there may be a game of word. In gospel of Philip we could find the game of word about the name Jesus Nazareth Christ. Maybe for the three Maria and the relationship between them and Jesus, the most important sense for the collector of this non-canon gospel is the sense of name. The name Maria should represent something important in this non-canon cosmology, I guess its meanning 'get down into the sea' or 'the sea of the tear', as the explain of the name Miriam the sister of Moses by Rashi. It could explain the reason about the importance of the name Maria, and connect to the gnostic cosmology, that the pure spouce of Christ, the Wisdom, is under the Yam Sof, separed from the supreme world, and the Wisdom is also the lost pearl must be found. By this way, the person Maria is not such important, but the person named Maria is important, and around Christ there must be a Maria.
Thank you for your attention !

We are here to understand something about human relation with other humans and the world, and if you understand that you go to Heaven (that is, the Mystical union with God) and are prepared for that and the second Earth and Heaven: or if you fail to understand, you go to hell beacuse you condemned yourself. Im no longer catholic beacuse there,s no real sense of community, and that the basic "message" is the same. You are here to learn.

I'd like to contribute another aspect of the "bridal chamber": It is closely related to parables from all canonical gospels (e.g., Mark 2,19-20) about Jesus as the bridegroom and also to the OT, especially the Songs of Salomon. In addition, the prophets often accused the "chosen people" of committing adultery when worshipping idols instead of god. Therefore, the "bridal chamber" also has deep biblical origins. Now, it gets some peculiar spiritual interpretation.

The bridal chamber is a physical place that is in Daoism referred to as the Crystal Palace, or Cave of Brahma in Tantra. It refers to the 3rd ventricle in the brain, where the main energy channels (nadi) of Ida and Pingala terminate in the place of Pineal and Pituitary glands. The process is also what Alchemy refers to as the creation of Androgynous Child. It is the process of restructuring the brain with the activation of dormant neurons and stimulation of Corpus Colossus (the tissue between the brain hemispheres), so we can have both brain hemispheres active at the same time. The same process is called Satori in Zen or Enlightenment in Indian systems and is compared to the opening of a thousand petal lotus (the effect of dormant neuron activation).

I can name all 12 apostles.
A trick is, three pairs had the same name. Two Judas's. Two James's. Two Simon's. So that's 6.
There was also three pairs of brothers. James son of Alphaeus and Judas Thaddaeus(not Iscariot). And there was Simon Peter and Andrew. And there was James and John son of Zebedee.
So the ones left over are Phillip, Bartholomeus, Thomas and Matthew.
I love the bible, it imparts soul into the reader.

this reminds me of a section of John 1,1
" The true light, who gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was (made) by him, but the world did not recognize him. He came to what was his own, but his own did not receive him. But to all who have received him-those who believe in his name-he has given the right to become God’s children -children not born of the flesh or by human desire or a husband’s decision, but by God."

The Baha'i Faith clarifies the special place of Mary Magdalene in Jesus' heart and the important role that she played in the aftermath of the Crucifixion. She is said to have galvanized the Apostles who were despondent, gathering them together and lovingly chiding them to get their act together.

Filip - as ever, absolutely fascinating. The historian in me keeps on wondering where the Valentinian and, indeed, Gnostic overall, 'system' came from. It is extraordinarily complex and seems to have no relation to any world-view before their time. I would love it if you could try and explain this and how they came to their theology in the context of Christianity or, at least, how they came to believe what they did in the context of Jesus of Nazareth.

Philip is mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles as an evangelist see Acts 21:8. The text which we are lucky to even have it, would have been written down by followers many times before the texts we do have. Barbara Thiering has a good discussion of this work in her books.
In actual religious history , there has always been lots of opinions and outlooks. It is only when we choose to objectify these movements do we think there is only the orthodox dogmas.

Most people are familiar with Christianity in its "Romanized" form, but this early material is far more interesting and filled with controversy.

Great movie but unfortunately a lot is not known to us today ...
My opinion is that everything important in these books is written in code and the explanation of the "code" is lost to us.
The bridal chamber is as you said some kind of ritual or process, but it is lost to us now and Mary might not even be a person = a human being.
The idea that you have to "resurrect" before death, to achieve the actual resurrections, is found in other traditions also.

I am struck by the genesis of creation stated in this text and the similarity of creation of the world as portrayed in J.R.R. Tolkien's Silmarillion with the original world as meant in the Song of the Ainur being corrupted (by Melkor) and the great spirits being in pairs of male and female. I wonder if he was using these or other ancient texts when developing the world of Middle Earth; a lot of which was developed prior to the 1940's.

Some people insist that Jesus must've been married because that was what was expected of Jewish men at that time and it would've been unusual if he had not been wedded. Well, it is readily apparent to me that Jesus isn't your average run of the mill guy. People also tend to forget that John the Baptist had no wife and there were disciples of Jesus who were not married either such as Andrew. Saul of Taursus who became Paul the Apostle was also not married and actually encouraged people not to get married. There were also groups like the Essenes who had many members who chose not to marry and were celebate. Many think there may have been a connection between the Essenes and John the Baptist and Jesus.

I would have liked to have seen more on who wrote it, why it wasn’t Phillip, and how that sizes up with other gospels, both canonical and noncanonical in terms of who wrote them being perhaps being apparent in the title or not, and, if not the person in that title, what does that imply, were they stating Phillip’s point of view for example, or? Many questions for me on that…
