  • This how-to video shows the procedure for removing the lower unit on an antique 1968 3.9hp Mercury outboard motor including steps for water pump disassembly.
After a failing tank test in which water was not observed flowing out of the tell-tale with the engine running, this vintage motor was taken into the shop and disassembled. During removal of the lower unit, root cause was determined to be a disintegrated impeller. Pieces of the broken water pump were found in the water tube and in the water pump. Follow these easy steps to remove your lower unit and check the impeller if you suspect your water pump may be going bad.

Excellent video. And kudos to the camera person for moving slowly and getting right in there for what we need to see has viewers. When you remove that lower unit I expected to see a lot of buildup on the water pump housing case!! Thanks for taking the time to put this video out really appreciate it and subscribed.

It great to see your videos but do you have any ideas how to repair a seized motor, gear lever

It usually won’t pull water when it is trapped in a barrel.-ear muffs are best to force water in.

Dang can’t believe the actual base of the water pump housing is broken, wonder if they overtightened it. They’re old plastic but also very durable.

That awesome great video. Wished y'all could help me out with some of the plugs I've found on mine and explain some of its general maintenance needed.

I don't understand. what about the shifter rod ? I've got a merc outboard and I just cannot get the lower unit off and I've watched many youtube videos and the say the shifter shaft needs to be disconnected in order to drop the lower unit.

Is just me or does OMC have a better water pump design . Looks to like the Mercury pump would wear out a lot faster with little fins compared to OMC's

Outboard Fun I have both. Some of the design of the Mercury is great and some design components on the OMC are great. And both of them have design mechanisms that make me think 'WTF were these guys thinking or drinking'

I'm wondering the same. He said he had it in Forward before he finished tapping the lower unit off. I'm guessing there is some significance.
